Members of the parish facing surgery or other medical procedures or tests are invited to receive this sacrament prior to their medical procedures. PARISH REGISTRATION St. Mary s is always happy to welcome new members. If you are interested in parish membership, it would be most helpful if you would call to make an appointment to register ( ). An appointment will guarantee the presence of a staff member to answer your questions and walk through a welcome packet with you. Baptism Preparation Children ages 6 and under: Those seeking to have children baptized should be registered, active members of St. Mary s Visitation Parish. Parents who request baptism for a child are expected to complete a preparation class. It is offered bi-monthly. The scheduled classes for this year are: Saturday, March 11 th from 10:30-11:30am in church Saturday, May 6 th from 10:30-11:30am in church It is generally easier if the preparation is done before the birth of the child. If you have attended a session within the last five years, it is not necessary to retake the class. To schedule a baptism, please view the baptism dates on the parish website, Please contact Jenny Dascoli in the Liturgy & Music office at or jdascoli@stmaryeg.org for more information or to register for the baptism class. Children ages 6-12: Please call the Liturgy & Music Office. Adults ages 12 and up: Adults who wish to join the Catholic Church and were not baptized can participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please call Josh Dieterich, Co-director of Christian Formation - Middle School, Adult and Family Ministry, for more information. The Sacrament of Matrimony The Catholic Church takes preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony very seriously. Generally at least 6 months should be allowed for this preparation. Engaged couples themselves should call the parish office to schedule an appointment to discuss their plans. Marriage can take place any day of the week, although Saturday is generally preferred by couples. Sunday weddings are possible, but a wedding Mass is not allowed for such occasions.

March For Life Pilgrimage to Washington DC Please join SMV parishioners Bob and Peggy Hamill as we travel with Pro-Life Wisconsin to Washington DC for the March For Life. Coach buses depart from SMV the evening of January 25 and return the morning of the 29th. For details call Pro-Life Wisconsin ASAP, ext.10. This trip will change your life. Anyone under 18 must be chaperoned. Thank You From Our Troops St. Mary s Christian Women teamed up with Hunzinger Construction to collect much needed items for our men and women in uniform during the holiday season. Thank you to all our parishioners who helped make this drive such a success. Following is one of the letters of gratitude received: Dear St. Mary s Parish, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the care packages that have been arriving recently. It is my understanding that your church helped to pack those packages. I and those in my unit appreciate that you and many others have taken the time to put together the letters and boxes on behalf of our soldiers. As the Chaplain of a unit who stands ready to head off anywhere in Afghanistan in under an hour, I can t tell you enough how much your packages mean to my soldiers. Soldiers eagerly await mail call to see if they have received a letter or a package. When I take the packages over to the ready tent, the guys eyes light up. It is not just the snacks and other items that bring them a bit of relief, but the knowledge that people in the United States are standing behind them, supporting them. I know they will get hours of enjoyment out of the items and the snacks are a welcome treat. What doesn t get eaten right away gets packed in their ready bag waiting to provide nourishment to the soldiers as they head out anywhere the Army needs them at a moment s notice. I am also able to keep a Free X stocked with items from some of the packages so troops can come at any time and get any extra supplies or snacks they need. Some of our soldiers are on their first deployment, others have been deployed 5 or more times. All of them know one thing, it is the support of people and groups in the United States that give them a bit of joy in an otherwise bleak and lonely place. I want to thank you for your continued support of our soldiers. It has been a long war, and many have forgotten the sacrifices of our troops. People like yourself help all of us keep going, knowing that America has not forgotten. Keep up the good work. It is our honor to serve on behalf of you and all Americans, preserving and protecting the freedoms that mean so much to so many. As the Chaplain it is part of my job to advise the commander on the morale of the troops. Packages like these go a long way in helping keep that morale high on a regular basis. Forty days after the birth of a child, Israelite parents presented the newborn at the temple in Jerusalem. Luke says that the parents of Jesus obeyed this law. In doing so, they revealed him as the fulfillment of the law. [Sourcebook 2005, p. 68] It is Simeon s prophecy that connects the action of presenting the child Jesus to God to the symbol of candles on this feast. In the gospel from Luke, Simeon s words at seeing the infant Jesus are: Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have fulfilled your word. For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the peoples to see: A revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of your people Israel. Christ is the Light for all people. In the past, Catholics often had blessed candles in their home - candles to light when someone was sick, when there was a bad storm or a special need. Candles are a reminder of Christ s presence. Candles for use in church are blessed on this day. We have candle sets available in the parish office. If you wish, please stop by to pick up a set (we ask a nominal donation of $2.00) and bring it to the 6:30am Mass on Thursday, February 2 nd to be blessed. 5 JANUARY 22, Adoration Chapel In Chapter 1 the Gospel of Mark tells us that Jesus Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. This year s theme is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. This is a very fitting theme for St. Mary s, which is known for exceptional faith development in our students, a strong focus on academic excellence, high moral standards, and a commitment to service. At all the Masses next weekend you will see our students participating as greeters, readers, gift bearers, acolytes and choir members. I m sure that you ll be as proud of our students as I am. What helps make this possible is the dedication and commitment of you, our parishioners. It is the generations of families before us, the 160 years of commitment and sacrifice of our parishioners, that has made Catholic education a priority here at St. Mary s. I am thankful to you every day, but I want to make a point at this special time of year to publicly extend my deepest appreciation to you for making our school an exemplary school.
