2 The Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2016 Pastor s Note October 29-November 5 And he came down quickly and received him with joy. Today s Gospel passage shows us the way we should respond to Jesus call: quickly and joyfully. These elements reflect the two aspects of our encounter with God; there is a hurriedness to go to meet the Lord Jesus, followed by the consequence of the presence of the Lord in our lives: joy. Acting in haste is one of the difficult things that we need to work on. We are called to do good and to do it quickly; any delay in doing so is fraught with consequences. The result sometimes is that in delaying our encounter with the Lord, the precise opportunity that was open to us may have passed us by. How many times have we considered helping others or not and when we have finally decided to do so, that person is no longer there? Yes, there will surely be other opportunities; but this one, we let go. For this reason, we need to do good and to do it quickly. As in Zacchaeus encounter with Jesus, when we are sure of what is right and of our ability to accomplish it, there is no reason to wait. We cannot delay our response to see if others will do it, so that we would not have to do it. If someone were giving us a gift, would we wait to see if anyone else takes it before we do? The other consequence of the encounter with Jesus is joy. As the prophet affirms: The Lord, your God is in your midst, a warrior who gives you the victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing, as on a day of festival (Zephaniah 3:17). Many saints and fathers of the Church affirmed that joy is a sign of God. The real joy invades the soul of believers, and touches everything they do. One of the things your soul always has is joy, joy for knowing that God loves us, joy for the certainty that He is always with us. Saturday 5:00 Judy Contreras Sunday Monday 7:00 Sylvia Busch 8:30 Mary Pham 10:00 Mathew Bordersen 11:30 John Minutello 6:00 St. Martin of Tours Parishioners 8:00 Diane Borella Tuesday 8:00 Terry Pappalardo Wednesday 8:00 Justin Semana Thursday 8:00 Atillio & Yvonne Borella Friday 8:00 Fred Faboni Saturday 8:00 Right to Life Sometimes because of all of the worries and struggles of our lives, happiness may elude us, but it is in those moments that, more than ever, we need to encounter God. It is in the Lord s presence that we learn to value all that is before us and rejoice in the important things. The sign of a true Catholic is joy, not the temporary joy of one day, but a joy that goes beyond days and years, and is found in something that no one can take away: the presence of Jesus in our lives. We are called, as was Zacchaeus, to respond to the Lord s presence with a hastened heart and to begin rejoicing in our God s presence now and for all eternity. -Fr. Sergio

Introduction to Village House This past year, the Diocese of San Jose hosted 15 women in need of a place to stay, granting them shelter in various parishes for several months. Our parish hosted the women for one week, providing all meals, portable showers, and a safe place to sleep. The Peace and Justice Commission at St Martin's engaged hundreds of volunteers to enable this ministry. In 2017, multiple parishes in the diocese, along with other faith-based organizations, will again provide housing for 15 women throughout the year. The Diocese has named the project "Village House." St Martin of Tours will host the women for the entire month of February. This project will require hundreds of volunteers, so please watch the bulletin for your chance to participate! Job: The NOW Testament An Original Musical (and fundraiser for Village House) When we experience suffering in our world and in our own lives, many say it is part of God s plan but is it? 8 Bishop McGrath s Statement on the 2016 Elections As we approach this Fall s General Election, I know that many of you like myself are in the process of discerning the choices before us in the presidential race, as well as in many of the other races and issues that will be decided on November 8. I am writing to you today to put forward principles for your consideration in arriving at decisions that are consistent with Catholic teaching. 1. Every citizen who is eligible to vote must do so. It is a sacred trust, a grave responsibility. In casting a ballot, each person becomes a participant in our democratic process. Voting is a moral act, it expresses our values, our faith, and our hopes for our nation and world. 2. Be informed. Read and study the many issues and candidates that will appear on your ballot. There are no simple answers to the challenges that face our nation and our world. The United States is integrated into the society of nations and cannot act unilaterally. The good of the whole world and the welfare of people most at risk the common good must always be considered in the policies that govern the actions of our nation. 3. There are key moral and social issues that need to be considered in casting one s vote. The teaching of Pope Francis is clear that there are a number of concerns that must be included in moral decisionmaking. Among these are abortion, poverty, capital punishment, care for the environment, assisted suicide, and immigration. 4. There is no perfect candidate. There is no Catholic candidate. No candidate s position on the issues lines up consistently with the teaching of the Church. San Diego Bishop Robert W. McElroy notes the inherent complexity in casting a ballot: Voting for candidates is a complex moral action in which the voter must confront an entire array of competing candidates positions in a single act of voting. It is crucial that in voting for a candidate who supports the advancement of an intrinsic evil, Catholic voters not have the intention of supporting that specific evil, since such an intention would involve them directly in the evil itself. But voters will often find themselves in situations where one candidate supports an intrinsically evil position, yet the alternative realistic candidates all support even graver evils in the totality of their positions. 5. The Church may become directly involved in encouraging parishioners to vote one way or another on issues of moral import. This would include, for example, our support of Proposition 62, which would eliminate the death penalty, and our opposition to Proposition 66, which would expedite the implementation of the death penalty. 6. Every Catholic citizen has the responsibility to form their conscience by considering the complexity of the issues, the teaching of the Church, and their own relationship with the Lord. We are bound to vote according to our conscience. As Pope Francis stated in The Joy of Love, it is the role of the pastors to help form consciences, not to replace them. In closing, I entrust you all to the Lord, that you may be enlightened by the indwelling Holy Spirit and that you may participate as responsible citizens in casting your ballot on November 8. As you do so, please know that you are all in my prayers. Statement from Bishop Patrick J. McGrath on Propositions 62 and 66 In these months before November, the electorate of California will prepare to cast ballots on a record number of propositions. Among these is Proposition 62, which would put an end to the death penalty, and Proposition 66, which seeks to expedite the application of the death penalty. I join with the Bishops of California who favor Proposition 62 and oppose Proposition 66, and I appeal to Catholics of the Diocese of San Jose to do the same, to affirm that human life all life is a gift from God. Society has the responsibility to protect the common good; however, the death penalty does not achieve this any more effectively than is possible within the prison system. In addition to this, the number of Death Row prisoners who have eventually been found to be innocent calls into question the viability of capital punishment. Among these is a disproportionate number who are members of minorities and/or the poor. The Catechism of the Catholic Church echoes the teaching of popes, beginning with Saint John XXIII, against the death penalty. Most recently, Pope Francis declared that capital punishment is an offense to the inviolability of life and to the dignity of the human person...it likewise contradicts God s plan for individuals and society, and his merciful justice. I encourage you to affirm life as you vote in favor of Proposition 62, and against Proposition 66 on November 8.
