IVAN S DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today the Church celebrates the cherished feast of Corpus Christi, in honor of the sacred Body and Blood of her Lord. The origins of the feast are quite interesting: it all began with a woman from Belgium by the name of Juliana ( ). In her young age she received a vision of the Church under the appearance of a full moon having one dark spot. The Lord explained to her that the Church will always have such a dark spot, as long as she does not institute a feast in honor of the Holy Eucharist. Providence had it that a local priest she had divulged the matter to later became Pope Urban IV. After his election as pope, Urban had to deal with the unusual case of a priest, by the name of Peter of Prague, who, struggling to believe that the bread and wine were truly transformed into the Body and Blood of our Lord in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, went down to Rome in 1263 from his native Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) on pilgrimage, in the hope that upon celebrating the Eucharist at the tomb of St. Peter and at the Roman Catacombs, his doubts would be dispelled. Much to his disappointment, Fr. Peter started trekking back home with doubts still lingering in his mind. He came across the Church of St. Christina in Bolsena (just North of Rome) and there he celebrated Mass in private. He had barely spoken the Words of Consecration when blood started to seep from the consecrated Host and trickle over his hands onto the altar and the corporal. The priest, confused, at first attempted to hide the blood, but then he interrupted the Mass and asked to be taken to the neighboring city of Orvieto, the city where Pope Urban IV was then residing. The Pope listened to the priest's account and sent emissaries for an immediate investigation. When all the facts were ascertained, he ordered the Host and the linen cloth bearing the stains of blood brought to Orvieto. The linen corporal bearing the spots of blood is still reverently enshrined and exhibited in the Cathedral of Orvieto. Prompted by this phenomenal occurrence, Pope Urban commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bonaventure to compose hymns for a Mass honoring the Holy Eucharist as the Body of Christ. Judging by its profound beauty, the Mass composed by St. Thomas Aquinas was chosen when, by means of a Papal Bull (Decree), Urban IV instituted the Feast of Corpus Christi in August 1264, a year after the Miracle at Bolsena. Who is not moved upon hearing the words of the Pange Lingua, one of the hymns composed by Thomas Aquinas for this Feast Day, which we sing in Latin at the conclusion of Eucharistic Adoration and which is found on the back cover of our Missalettes? 3 Around the Archdiocese Archdiocesan Marriage Day Celebration Bishop Cozzens invites you to celebrate the beautiful mystery of the mutual self-gift between a man and woman in the Sacrament of Matrimony on Saturday, June 4 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul, 10:00 a.m. for Mass, renewal of vows, and a short reception. Couples celebrating their silver, golden and platinum anniversaries will be honored in a special way and are invited to attend. Families and friends of all couples are welcome! For more information, call or visit Certificates to commemorate the gift of marriage between a man and a woman, signed by Archbishop Bernard Hebda are available for couples married one or more years. To receive a certificate, please contact the Office of Marriage, Family & Life at or mfl@archspm.org. Archdiocesan Prayer Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Thursday, June 2, 7 p.m. Friday, June 3, 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, Mendota Join us for this time of prayer, penance, and healing for our Archdiocese and our priests. There will be time for Eucharistic Adoration, reflections, and devotions throughout the vigil. The vigil will conclude with 7 p.m. Mass on Friday. For the complete schedule and to sign up for a Holy Hour, please visit =From the Parish Administrator= I want to thank everyone for their many different works as a community to move forward with parish projects. The whole parish chipped in to meet the Catholic Services Appeal goal! This has not happened in recent years but you rose to the challenge and achieved this. If all the funds are collected that have been pledged the parish will receive over $4,700 back. I hope many of you will be attending the rectory open house this weekend. This, again, is another effort that many parishioners contributed to by either helping with the work of renovating the space, contributing to the rectory furnishings fund or helping with the open house. The whole parish community joined together to make this big work happen. The Men s Club and Festivities Committee took on the work of preparing food for the open house. Thank you for your generosity! You should notice the new trees planted along Geranium. They replace the ones that were removed last fall. We will be working on applying more mulch to various gardens/landscaped areas this summer. The new trees will get some mulch so that the dirt does not erode away. Have a beautiful Memorial Day weekend! Karen Cronin Parish News and Events Catholic Watchmen Rally Thursday, June 16, 6:30 9 p.m. at St. Hubert, Chanhassen Men are invited to the Catholic Watchmen Rally. Jeff Cavins will present on Jesus Walking in Me: The Choices I Make. This Catholic Watchmen Rally is an opportunity for men to draw closer to Jesus Christ and invest in fellowship with other men. There will be time for Adoration and Confession. Dinner will be provided. Registration is not required. A free will offering will be collected. Questions? Contact Susanna Bolle at bolles@archspm.org or Parish Bulletin Our parish bulletin has a new submission day to Liturgical Press. 5 From Fr. Ivan s Desk- Continued from Page 2 May we all treat the Holy Eucharist with the dignity and respect that it deserves. Here are some dispositions which may help us and those around us grow in our union with Christ in the Eucharist: Seeking to arrive at Church before Mass begins, and taking some time for an intimate conversation with the Lord (after switching off our cellphones!); Never leaving the Church until after the Recessional Song. Apart from seeming extremely rude, leaving Church early only underlines a person s lack of understanding of what we celebrate. Making a genuflection upon entering the Church (facing towards the Tabernacle) and j ust before leaving. Men wearing a hat (or a cap) are meant to take it off upon entering the Church. Not receiving the Eucharistic species when in grave sin, without first approaching the Sacrament of Penance. Wearing clothing that is more suitable for Church than for the beach. God Bless and have a good Sunday. Fr. Ivan Sant FrIvanSant@churchofstbernard-stp.org Congratulations to Ben Kitto and John Van Cura who received the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the sacrament of Confirmation on Monday, May 23rd at the Cathedral of St. Paul with Bishop Cozzens presiding. May they always have the strength and courage to give witness to Christ and His Church. CATECHESIS ALL ARE INVITED (12 YEARS OLD +) Something beautiful is coming to St. Bernard s parish For those who are near and for those who are far away The Lord knows you and wants to give you a tremendous gift in this year of mercy COME AND LISTEN! Christ is passing I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10) Mondays & 7 pm Free child care For more information: Neo-Catechumenal Way New Missionary Intern During the months of June and July, we will have a new face around St. Bernard s. Meet Kevin W., a seminarian of the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan. Kevin was one the missionary interns who joined Faith Formation s Missionary Internship this year. This project had the evangelization and the catechesis of the Karenni near our parish church in mind, serving as a support for the newly formed RCIA. Kevin was so impacted by this internship that he requested his bishop to allow him to stay at St. Bernard s for a summer mission reaching out to the Karenni through sports, home visits, Bible studies, and discipling (mentoring in faith). Welcome Kevin and thank you for your service! St. Paul, Minnesota Page 5
