2 Holy Communion Th Nw Tstamnt rvals Jsus to b th Passovr lamb sacrificd on Calvary for our sins (s 1 Cor 5:7-8; 1 Pt 1:19; Rv 5:6). Howvr, in th Passovr, as in othr Jwish sacrificial rits, it was not nough to hav th animal killd. Eating th sacrificial lamb was an ssntial part of th Passovr clbration (s Ex 12:8-12). A communion mal followd th sacrific, and it was th shard mal that xprssd th saling of th covnant and forgd communion btwn th participants and God. This is important implications for undrstanding th Eucharist as communion. If Jsus is th nw Passovr lamb who was sacrificd for our sins, it would sm fitting that thr would b a communion mal accompanying his sacrific on th cross a mal in which w would partak of h tru sacrificial Lamb of God, Jsus Christ. Looking at it from a biblical prspctiv, w might almost xpct thr to b a communion mal flowing from Christ s sacrific. This would follow th biblical pattrn of sacrific and communion. St. Paul points us in this dirction in his first lttr to th Corinthians, which rflcts this Jwish notion of sacrific and communion. H taught, Christ, our paschal lamb, has bn sacrificd. Lt us, thrfor, clbrat th fstival (1 Cor 5:7-8). Notic how Christ s sacrific is undrstood to find its culmination in a fstiv mal. Paul latr maks clar what fstiv mal h has in mind: th Eucharist. In chaptr 11, h givs an account of Jsus instituting th Eucharist at th Last Suppr, and in Chaptr 10, h dscribs th profound unity stablishd through partaking of Christ s body and blood: Th cup of blssing which w blss, is it not a communion in th blood of Christ? Th brad which w brak, it is not a communion in th body of Christ? Bcaus thr is on brad, w who ar many ar on body, for w all partak in on brad (1 Cor 10:16-17). It is no wondr that th Catholic Church has sn holy communion as th climax of Eucharistic worship. As th Catchism xplains, Th clbration of th Eucharistic sacrific is wholly dirctd toward th intimat union of th faithful with Christ through communion. To rciv communion is to rciv Christ himslf of us. Indd, holy communion is th most profound union w can hav with God this said of trnity. God coms to us sacramntally on our altars at Mass and rmains prsnt to us outsid of Mass in th tabrnacl. This alon is quit aw-inspiring! But God s dsir to unit himslf to us gos vn furthr. In holy communion, Our Lord ntrs our bodis, joining himslf to our souls in this most intimat union. This is th tim to giv our fullst attntion to th Lord, as h dwlls within us aftr holy communion. Whn w com back to our sat at church, w should pour our harts out to th Lord to lov him, to thank him, to shar our dpst nds and ptitions with him. In ths momnts aftr communion, w bcom lik Mary, who carrid th God-Man in hr womb for nin months. What a mystry! Mary had hr crator and savior in hr womb! And yt, what happnd in Mary also happns to som dgr sacramntally within us, whn w rciv th body and blood of Our Christ. W bcom living tabrnacls, housing th prsnc of th God-Man himslf. This is not th tim to b looking around to s popl ar waring. This is not th tim to b thinking about th football gam latr this aftrnoon or dvloping a stratgy for how to gt out of th parking lot quickly. This is th tim to rst with Our Lord who has so lovingly com to dwll within us. Rciving holy communion rgularly can hav a trmndous impact on our daily livs. It can hlp us ovrcom waknss and sin, guid us in our dcisions, support us in our trials and suffrings, and nabl us to grow in holinss. By nourishing ourslvs with th Eucharistic body and blood of Christ, w ar gradually transformd by his vry lif dwlling within us. In a sns, to us a modrn xprssion, w bcom what w at! That is a point St. Lo th Grat onc mad: Nothing ls is aimd at in our partaking of th body and blood of Christ, thn that w chang into what w consum, and vr bar in spirit and flsh him in whom w hav did, bn burid, and hav risn. In conclusion, w hav sn th Mass as a sacrific, ral prsnc, and holy communion. With this basic background, w ar now prpard to bgin our biblical walk though th part of th Mass. 3 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman bfrindd two widows aboard ship whil migrating to Amrica. Thy bought a hous in Philadlphia and bgan to liv a community lif undr th dirction of a prist. Soon thy rlocatd to Washington. Thr, th "pious ladis," as th nighbors calld thm, wr askd by thir prist frind, by thn th prsidnt of Gorgtown Univrsity, to bgin a rligious community. In 1799 thy stablishd a branch of th Visitation Ordr foundd by Saint Jan d Chantal and Saint Francis d Sals in th 1620s. Th uniqu vision of this ordr followd a snsibl routin, lss arduous and mor flxibl than most traditions, and also accptd widows and oldr womn. Amazingly, this Amrican outpost of th Visitation bgan without rfrnc to th "rul" of th Ordr. Most of th Europan convnts had bn lost undr th "rign of trror," and th ruls and customs of th community could not b obtaind. A copy of th rul was discovrd in 1812, and in 1816 th pop officially stablishd th monastry. By thn, som Frnch nuns had rgroupd, and thy snt a habit and cross to b copid. (No rligious wor th habit in public in th Unitd Stats until aftr th Civil War.) From th bginning, th Gorgtown nuns had an ducational mission, vn though thy discovrd in th "rul" that such work was officially off-limits for th contmplativ lif. In Amrica, th nuns dpndd on a school for thir livlihood, so th rul was adaptd. Today, th Acadmy of th Visitation is a thriving xampl of xcllnc in Catholic ducation, and th adjacnt monastry is th oldst monastic foundation in th original thirtn Unitd Stats. --Rv. W may think that w hav to b ministrs or prists, missionaris or charity workrs, ngagd full-tim in works formally idntifid as bing "God's work." But vrything w do with a faithful hart and with lov for othrs is God's work. W ach hav our own rol to fill in th world, and many gifts ar ncssary. W cannot always s th dirct connction of our daily work to th plan of God. But w trust and w bliv that God lads us to do what is ndd, whr it is ndd. What is "God's work?"
