Aftr my parnts sparation, w movd to Long Bach, California, and church lost som of its importanc in my lif. Not long aftr arriving in Long Bach I was nlistd into th Rollin 20 Crips. Aftr svral yars of proving myslf within th gang, I vntually bcam th ladr. At ag 20, I was incarcratd for two yars at th Jamstown Consrvation Cntr for Mn. Aftr complting my stint at Jamstown, I rturnd to th strts of Long Bach and into th arms of my hood, whr I rsumd a lif of crim. My two yars of frdom A yard pastor s work at Cntinla Stat Prison bgins on Saturday with two 3 ½ hour srvics; Sunday rpats Saturday s schdul. Thus four yards hav srvics totaling wr again intrruptd with a trip to Consrvation Mn s Colony (CMC), Lvl 3 prison, whr I was dtaind for two yars, from 1984 to I was rlasd in arly 1986, and bfor th Nw Yar I violatd my parol and rturnd to prison. I rmaind in prison for 15 months; I was rlasd in It was during that last stint in prison that my fathr cam to s m whil I was lockd up. Th fact that h cam from Louisiana to s m showd m that h card. I flt that I wantd to bgin a rlationship with him. Whn I was rlasd, I wnt to Nw Orlans to s him and h baptizd m. That was th bginning of a spiritual transformation in my lif. As a rsult, I fl God I v... talkd and prayd with inmats who may nvr com to chapl. about 300 mn. Inmats lad singing and conduct a choir; on inmat givs a thirty minut xhortation, followd by my forty-fiv minut to an hour srmon. calld m to work with prison inmats as a Yard Pastor. In my tim as a youth, I did not always fl that I had appropriat mal rol modls or suprvision. Whn I ralizd that my nphw, Mark, was ncountring th sam things that I did on th strts of Long Bach, I brought him to San Digo to liv with m. H is a high school junior at Mors High School, and I am rsponsibl for his rligious, social and custodial car. Prison Ministry, as my srvic to th Lord, has bcom my passion and my way of lif. It is my lif. It is what I will do for th rst of my lif, for as long as God wants m to. It is His will. H is an x hit-man, and as I was listning to him, I was thanking God at th sam tim for allowing m to b thr for that particular inmat and b an ambassador of His Kingdom to bring good nws of salvation to this soul. This man has a sntnc of 184 yars to lif, lost his wif and childrn and has bn in Pastor Elna Hrnandz, Pastor Spanish Ministry prison for 20 yars. How can h not b angry at God? Not only is h angry at God, but also at th whol world for having this kind of sntnc. H challngd m with som vry difficult qustions that mad fl inadquat for on minut, but thn th Holy Spirit took control of th situation and as w prayd, h startd crying. Th prsnc of God was vry tangibl. Rcntly as larg numbr of inmats had bn movd to anothr facility, and h was distrssd about th loss of so many dar brothrs whom h may nvr s again. For a long tim th fllowship in that facility had grown togthr in th lov of Jsus, praising and worshipping togthr, growing and struggling with sin, suffring th bittr consquncs of it. Now th community had bn abruptly rippd in two, and ovr half wr ld off to liv in anothr facility. Sadly, this is not an uncommon xprinc for inmats, although usually it happns on by on as thy go to committ and ar rassignd for a varity of rasons. Hurt by th impact of such dislocations inmats turn to th Lord and thir pastor for comfort and guidanc. As w shard togthr it was my privilg to suffr with and ncourag this brothr in Christ. W prayd togthr, and h will b OK. But, somthing sticks in my mmory of this ncountr. H askd about his pastor. Although I am th chaplain, I am not his pastor; I com only onc a wk to pray and study with th brothrs thr. But all thos days that I am not thr th mn xprinc drama and trauma in thir prsonal and collctiv livs, and thy nd a pastor to whom thy can go, somon who will listn, ncourag and pray with thm. So, h askd m, "Whr's our Pastor?" W nd him almost vry day, and w only gt to s him occasionally. What can I say? With ovr 4,700 inmats scattrd on fiv facilitis, I cannot b thr for vry on who has a nd vry day. Ths ar nds that can only b mt with a giftd, calld and committd Yard Pastor, mn who many tims ar just "thr", availabl for whatvr crisis may rupt in th livs of th mn, and thy occur daily. Thr is a wondrful Yard Pastor who rgularly ministrs to th mn in that facility, but h cannot b thr as much as h is ndd bcaus h must work and support himslf and his family. H is a faithful "tntmakr", lik Paul, supporting himslf and srving whn h can. But, th nd is for mor tim than h can giv. H is a local missionary to th mn in prison, and h nds financial support so that h can work lss in th world and mor in th kingdom. W prais and thank God for snding us such godly srvants and for thos who provid prayr and financial support for thm.
