2 An Examination of Conscinc In th Confitor, w confss our sins not only to almighty God, but also to you my bothrs and sistrs. Th prayr thus follows th xhortation of Jams to confss your sins to on anothr (Jan 5:16), and it highlights th social ffcts of sin. Our sins affct our rlationship with God and our rlationships with othrs. Th Confitor also challngs us to considr sriously four aras in which w may hav falln into sin: In my thoughts and in my words, in what I hav don and what I hav faild to do. Ths four points srv as an xcllnt xamination of conscinc: First, in my thoughts: St. Paul xhorts us to guard our thoughts, kping thm focusd on what is good: Whatvr is tru, whatvr is honorabl, whatvr is just, whatvr is pur, whatvr is lovly, whatvr is gracious, if thr is any xcllnc, if thr is anything worthy of prais, this about ths things. (Phil 4:8). Jsus, in th Srmon on th Mount, givs svral warnings about ways w can fall into sin in our thoughts. For xampl, without vr physically harming somon, w can sin through out angr towards othrs (Mt 5:22). Without vr physically touching somon, w can fall into adultry of th hart through our lustful thoughts (Mt 5:27-28). Judging othrs (Mt 7:1), bing anxious about th futur, or falling into dp discouragmnt ar othr ways our thoughts can lad us into sin (s Mt 6:25-34). Scond, in my words: Th lttr of Jams warns us that th tongu is a fir. Th spokn an b usd to blss and to curs, and whn it is usd for vil it causs grat turmoil. How grat a forst is st ablaz by a small fir! (Jas 3:5). Th Bibl mntions many ways our spch can b usd for harm. For xampl, gossip (2 Cor 12:20; 1 Tm 5:13; Rom 1:29), slandr (Rom 1:30; 1 Tm 3:11), insult (Mt 5:22), lying (Col 3:9; Wis 1:11; Sir 7:12-13; and boasting (Ps 5:5; 75:4; 1 Cor 5:6; Jas 4:16). Third, in what I hav don: This ara ncompasss most popl commonly think about sin actions that dirctly hurt othr popl or our rlationship with God. Along ths lins, th Tn Commandmnts ar oftn usd as th basis for an xamination of conscinc. Fourth, in what I hav faild to do: This is th most challnging part. Not only ar w rsponsibl for th slfish, pridful, and vil actions w hav committd, but w also will b hld accountabl on th Day of Judgmnt for th good that w hav faild to do! As th lttr of Jams tachs, Whovr knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin (Jas 4:14). This part of th Confitor rminds us that th Christian path is not mrly a via ngativa of avoiding sinful thoughts, words, dsirs, and actions. Christianity is ultimatly about th imitatio Christi th imitation of Christ. W must put on Christ and his virtus. Paul xhorts th Colossians to put on compassion, kindnss, lowlinss, mknss, patinc and most of all lov (Col 3:12-15). Jsus dos not want us mrly to avoid sin; h wants us to grow in his slf-giving lov. This is why th sin of th Rich Young Man is so tragic. H was a vry imprssiv Jwish man who kpt all th commandmnts no small fat, indd! Howvr, h was unwilling to answr th call of Christ. H could not lt go of his possssions, giv to th poor, and follow Jsus. And this was his downfall. Though h might hav rcivd an A on th first thr lvls of th Confitor s xamination of conscinc, h faild to pursu th highr good to which Jsus calld him and thrfor rmaind far from th kingdom of havn (Mt 19:16-24). This part of th Confitor at Mass challngs us to asks whthr thr is somthing in our livs vn if it is not bad that, lik th possssions of th Rich Young Man, has a hold on our hart and kps us from following Christ s call.
