3 Why Must Godparents Be Practicing Catholics? According to paragraph 1277 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (the official document containing the essential doctrines of the Catholic faith): Baptism is birth into the new life in Christ. In accordance with the Lord's will, it is necessary for salvation, as is the Church herself, which we enter by Baptism. And paragraph 1279: The fruit of Baptism, or baptismal grace, is a rich reality that includes forgiveness of original sin and all personal sins, birth into the new life by which man becomes an adoptive son of the Father, a member of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. By this very fact the person baptized is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ, and made a sharer in the priesthood of Christ. Furthermore, according to Canon 872 of the Code of Canon Law (the collection of ecclesiastical laws governing the Catholic Church established to preserve the Mission and Proclamation of Jesus Christ): Insofar as possible, a person to be baptized is to be given a sponsor [i.e., Godparent] who assists an adult in Christian initiation or together with the parents presents an infant for baptism. A sponsor [i.e., Godparent] also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it. And Canon 874: To be permitted to take on the function of sponsor [i.e., Godparent] a person must: Be designated by the one to be baptized, by the parents or the person who takes their place, or in their absence by the pastor or minister and have the aptitude and intention of fulfilling this function; Have completed the sixteenth year of age, unless the diocesan bishop has established another age, or the pastor or minister has granted an exception for a just cause; Be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on; Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared Not be the father or mother of the one to be baptized. That s what the Church has to say, now let s take a moment to understand why. At first glance, we may think the Code of Canon Law is too restrictive. After all, you d prefer the Godparents of your child to be people you re close to, people whose friendship or relationship is meaningful to you. This is a good desire, but before you decide the Church has too many rules, let s take a closer look at what Baptism is and does. The Catechism excerpts above explain what the Catholic Church has always believed, that when your child is baptized he or she participates in salvation by the merits of Jesus Christ, who alone is Savior, and becomes an adoptive son of the Father, a member of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. So, when you baptize your son or daughter you too proclaim Salvation is in Jesus Christ alone and profess faith in God as a Trinity of three Persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each of Whom is fully God. As a parent, you already know you are responsible for the health and well-being of your child. You have your child baptized, however, because you acknowledge you are also responsible for the spiritual health and well-being of your child, and you choose Godparents to assist you in this task. But if a Godparent does not believe Jesus Christ is Savior or does not believe in the Triune God, or is not striving to live according to these beliefs, can they truly assist you in that task of protecting and nurturing the spiritual health and well-being of your child? They cannot. For this reason, the Church describes who best fulfills the responsibilities entrusted to Godparents and we all want what s best for our children both physically and spiritually. When your child is baptized he or she will also be incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ. The Catholic Church is the only Church established by Jesus Christ Himself who extends His teaching authority to the pope and bishops. From them priests too receive authority to proclaim the Gospel and minister the sacraments. Since the 16 th century, there are non-catholic Christians who reject Jesus extension of authority to the Catholic Church believing either the Catholic Church is not the Church Jesus established or believing Jesus did not establish a Church. Why Catholics believe non- Catholic Christians are in error about the Church is a conversation for another time. What concerns us now is that non-catholic Christians cannot be Godparents to your child because they reject the Church your child will be incorporated into. Your child will be incorporated into the Catholic Church which is the Church Jesus gave us to protect and nurture our spiritual health and well-being this why we call the Church Mother but if a Godparent denies this, if they are not a Catholic Christian, they are not suited to help you protect and nurture the spiritual health and well-being of your child in the way Jesus Christ and His Church fully desires. Finally, let s consider a quick analogy to better illustrate why the Church says not just anyone can be your child s Godparents. If you were ready to build a house for your family, but needed help designing it and building it, would you call a medical researcher and physicist? No, of course not. You d call an architect and construction crew people who know how to get that specific job done so the house doesn t fall on your family while they sleep. Likewise, if your child needed surgery, would you ask a plumber to do the work? No, of course not. You d look for the best surgeon around to ensure your child is well taken care of. It really is no different when deciding who will be your child s Godparents. Godparents are entrusted with a specific job just like architects and surgeons and if someone isn t striving to believe and live in accord with the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church, they just aren t up to the job of being a Godparent. If you are having trouble finding a qualified person to be Godparent of your child, please speak with our pastor, and we will do our best to help you.

Centennial News - Sunday, May 27, 2018 St. Martin de Tours Dedicated - On June 2, 1844, the current structure of St. Martin de Tours church was dedicated by Archbishop Blanc. Fundraising to build a new church began as early as 1820 and construction began in The parish of St. Marin de Tours is the Mother Church of the Acadians, as it was the rst parish established in Southwest Louisiana after the arrival of the Acadians in While the historic church has undergone many renovations through the years, it continues to stand as a testimony to the faith of the Acadian settlers and of their descendants today. Marriage: Couples planning marriage need to make an appointment with the pastor at least six months before the intended wedding date to begin the preparation process. A wedding date cannot be scheduled without approval of the pastor. Anointing of the Sick: Contact the office to schedule an appointment, home or nursing home visit, and, if death is imminent, contact the office for immediate action. First Communion and Confirmation: Contact the Elementary DRE or High School DRE respectively. Holy Communion for the Homebound: Contact the parish office to request a visit.
