2 PAGE 2 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK... My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I would like to begin my reflections by taking a moment to thank, most sincerely, Gail Shirley, our very skilled organist and music director, for her years of dedicated service at St. Margaret Mary and then at Sacred Heart of Jesus. She is always a delight to work with and brings beautiful music to the Liturgy. Although Gail is retiring from this position, she promises to continue to be very involved in our parish and will be instrumental in a new initiative that we will be beginning. Please join me is thanking Gail at a reception in the PFC following today s 11:30 Mass. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Tom Adamowicz to the choir loft. Tom will begin playing and directing beginning on July 1 st. Tom had been the music director and organist at St. Gregory the Great before Michael Seredick. Please be sure to welcome Tom when you see him. I know that he will bring his musical abilities to our parish. Finally, please plan on attending our parish festival. We are in need of volunteers to help with the booths and also in the setting up for the festival. We are in particular need of people who are electricians. Please call Eileen in the parish office. There are still raffle tickets in the back of the church. If you have not yet picked yours up, please do so. This will help save the parish the cost of postage. Thank you for your kindness. May God s blessings be yours this week. Father Ireland Fr. Dave R. Ireland, S.T.D. Pastor Fr. Thomas J. Winkel, M.Div. Parochial Vicar Deacon David N. 3 JUNE 24, 2012 P AGE 3 MOVIN ON SINGIN A SONG We hope you are planning to stop by the Parish Family Center after Sunday s 11:30 Mass to say Thank You to Gail Shirley as she closes one chapter in her Book of Life and readies herself to begin a new one. Gail talks of growing up with church music and God s Word filling her home. Though not a cradle Catholic, she embraced her adoption into Catholicism with great gusto, taking her place on the organ bench first at St. Louis Parish, then for many years at St. Margaret Mary, and finally here at Sacred Heart of Jesus. Since her fingers and back now experience frequent visits from her good buddy, Arthur-Itis, and her voice quality no longer meets her minimum requirements for leading the community in song, she s exchanging the keyboard for the excitement of sharing her deep Faith with those who have left the Catholic Church or have yet to know the joy of belonging. As she takes her place downstairs each weekend, she does so in the knowledge that she can continue to serve her God same church, just a different pew. Gail invites and welcomes any of our parishioners who would like to work with her in this apostolate of evangelization to call her. She hasn't changed her number: Please remember in your prayers these deceased members who died and were buried from our parish this week: Virginia Lutkus Patricia Snelling Novak May God grant His Peace and Consolation to their families and friends who now mourn their deaths.

5 JUNE 24, 2012 P AGE 5 ANNUAL PARISH FESTIVAL... July URGENT WE NEED YOU If you are an electrician and able to donate your skills to help us with all the electrical hook-ups required for the Festival, please call either Eileen Gerome or Joanne Novak at the Parish Office ASAP ( ). Work will be done the days of July 6, 7, 9, 10, & 11. Our parishioner who has volunteered this work for the last several years is not able to climb ladders and be out in the heat anymore. He has offered to be available as a resource person to give guidance on where the wiring needs to be done and the location of supplies and equipment. Perhaps the hours can be shared by two or more generous parishioners. Please call to offer your expertise. Added to our NEEDS LIST are DEALERS FOR BLACK- JACK. We can provide an air-conditioned workplace and a group of dedicated volunteers who are working together to raise money for our parish. We need you to provide your time. An evening of training for anyone who feel a bit unsure about dealing and our house rules will be held Wednesday, July 11, at 7 p.m. in the Parish Family Center (PFC) ATTENTION TEENS: You are invited to come to share your time and energy working a few hours at the Festival in exchange for credit toward whatever service hours you may need to accumulate for your high school. If you would like to help out, please call Eileen Gerome at the Parish Office ( ) any Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. You will need to supply whatever form your school requires. FAMILY PERSPECTIVES... John the Baptist is a model for the New Evangelization. Today s Gospel prophesied exactly what he would do. In the power of the Holy Spirit, he would turn many in Israel to the Lord, turn the hearts of parents toward their children and teach the disobedient to understand righteousness. All Christian disciples are called to evangelize. All Christian families are to form and prepare a people fit for the Lord. Father Ireland will be flying to the Holy Land and Italy with a tour group from the U.S. Would you like to join him? The dates are April 1 to 14, 2013, and the cost is $4,699 per person for air and land costs. The tour will take you to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Galilee, Capernaum, Rome, Tuscany, Florence, Assisi, and Venice. You can view the entire trip and itinerary at In the menu on the home page select Trips with our Priest, or you can simply enter your name in the search field in the upper right hand corner. For any questions or concerns contact: Proximo Travel 857 West Boylston St. Worcester, MA toll free: Anthony@Proximotravel.com We will continue collecting clean, gently used t-shirts, flannel shirts/blankets, and terrycloth towels through Sunday. 6 PAGE 6 PARISHIONER SKILLS INVENTORY WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Back in March of this year, Bishop Lennon said he was both gratified and inspired by the number of people who came to the Cathedral to attend Mass before the Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally in downtown Cleveland. He said in his homily that this was not just a Catholic issue that the Catholic Bishops are standing up for all people of Faith to defend their First Amendment right to follow their maker and live their lives according to his or her religious beliefs. Most recently, our own Cleveland-based law firm Jones Day filed 12 lawsuits in federal courts across the U.S. on behalf of 43 Catholic dioceses, schools, hospitals and social services agencies challenging the Health and Human Services mandate as a violation of religious freedom under the First Amendment and Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The Cleveland Diocese has come out in full support of this action as well. But as Catholics, we can t stop there. This summer we have an opportunity to have our voices continue to be heard about this important issue. The Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is encouraging all Catholics and people of other faith traditions as well to participate in the Fortnight for Freedom. This two-week period began on June 21 ~ the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More ~ and will conclude on July 4, which is, of course, our nation s celebration of Independence Day. This special two-week period, which includes within it the feast days of several saints who were martyred for Christ when facing persecution by political powers of their day, will include time for study, prayer, Eucharistic Adoration, rallying and public action in the form of letters to Congress and President Barack Obama. Together, we can make a difference. For this is not just about the Faith we cherish so deeply but all those who cherish their own faith traditions as well. Let our voices be heard!!! We have begun to compile a Parishioner Skills Inventory for Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. While we have some information (much of it from the time of your initial registration with the parish), we want to update and expand the database. Even if nothing has changed for you, we would appreciate your completing and returning the clip-off below either via the collection basket or personally to the Parish Office. Periodically we contact parishioners to ask them to help meet a particular need at the parish or the Academy. This help may be in the form of volunteering, consulting on a specific project, helping to acquire services at discounted prices, offering your professional skills, or volunteering your time and/or materials for plumbing, electrical, painting, computers, etc. While there may not be an immediate need, it is good to have this information should the parish need arise. (clip off and return as soon as possible) Yes, I am willing to offer these skills to my parish: NAME: ADDRESS: PHONE: (land line) ( ) (mobile) ( ) Please continue to pray for our military men and women ~ and all police and fire personnel ~ who daily put themselves in harm s way to protect us. Let us remember, especially, those who gave their lives for our freedom. SKILL(S) or EXPERTISE:
