1 Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." - Mt 1:20-21 Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass 2001, 1998, 1970 CCD

3 DECEMBER 22, 2013 PAGE 3 Parents and children gather at the appointed time. The Father, as head of the family, will light the Christmas tree and the candles at the Crib. Then all sing the following two verses of the hymn Silent Night. All stand. S ILENT NIGHT! Holy Night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon Virgin undefiled, In whose arms the Holy Child Slumbers in heavenly peace, Slumbers in heavenly peace. Silent Night! Holy Night! Shepherds first see the sight, Hear the plains and valleys ring With the song that angels sing: Jesus, the Savior is born! FROM THE PASTOR S DESK I pray that you have a most Blessed Christmas. Please enjoy the following Christmas Eve program to be used in the home. As you know, Blessed John Paul called the family the Domestic Church. Fr. Winkel, Deacon Chordas, the parish staff and I assure you of our prayers and best wishes. Father Ireland A From the Gospel of Luke ND it came to pass, when the angels had departed from them into heaven, that the shepherds were saying to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us. So they went with haste, and they found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger. And when they had seen, they understood what had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard marveled at the things told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept in mind all these words, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken to them. After the Gospel all recite slowly and with reverence to the Apostles Creed; I believe in God the Father Almighty. All sit while the Mother, or one of the children, read the following. From the Roman Martyrology N the forty-second year of the Empire of Octavius I Augustus, whilst all the earth was at peace; in the Six Age of the world JESUS CHRIST Eternal God, and Son of the Eternal Father, willing to consecrate the world by His Gracious Advent, being conceived by the Holy Ghost, and the nine months of His conception being now accomplished, in Bethlehem of Juda, is born of the Virgin Mary, made man. THE BIRTHDAY, ACCORDING TO THE FLESH, OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. Now sing the third verse of Silent Night ILENT NIGHT! S Holy Night! Son of God, Light of Light. Streams of gladness flood the earth. From Thy cradle at Thy birth. Jesus, Thou Light of the world! Jesus, Thou Light of the world! The Father reads the beautiful portion from the Holy Gospel. All rise. Prayer from the Missal O GOD, who does gladden us with the yearly expectation of our redemption, grant that we, who now joyfully receive Thine only-begotten Son as our Redeemer, may also, without fear, behold Him coming as our judge, our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son: Who liveth and reigneth for ever and ever. All answer AMEN In conclusion the family sings O Adeste Fideles COME all ye faithful Joyful and triumphant, To Jesus, to Jesus in Bethlehem: Come and behold Him. Born the King of Angels, O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, At the end of this hymn let the children wish their parents a Blessed Christmas with the assurance that, in the triple Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, they will thank God for all the gifts and love which they received from their parents. Then let all spend some time together in the simplicity and joy of their hearts.

4 PAGE 4 FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Abbé Matthew Weaver writes... Dear Faithful of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, A most blessed and merry Christmas to you all from Gricigliano, Italy! Along with my wholehearted holiday greetings to you and your families, please allow me to offer to you, on this most joyful day of Christmas, a short reflection nourished by the great Wisdom of the Church on the sacred impact of what it is that we are celebrating: the birth of Jesus Christ, the mystery of the Incarnation. On this day, the Word, begotten from all eternity by the Father, was brought forth from the virginal womb of Mary; this means that the human and divine natures are joined in our Lord in the unity of a single Person the Second Person of the blessed Trinity. Further, since when we speak of a son we mean a person, Jesus must be called the Son of God, because as the Son of God He is a divine Person. From this it follows that our Lady is called the Mother of God; not that she has begotten the Word but because from her is derived the humanity that the Word has united to Himself in the mystery of the Incarnation. The first manifestation to the world of this mystery was the birth of our Lord at Bethlehem. We now see the reason why every year at Christmas the Church says Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given. It is the Son of God, God begotten of the Father from all of eternity who is now brought forth from the Virgin Mary as the Son of Man in the day of the Incarnation. With great devotion, says Pope Saint Leo the Great has the incarnate Word given Himself to win for us the fight against Satan, for not in His divine Majesty but in the weakness of our flesh He waged war against the cruel enemy. The victory which He has gained, in spite of His weakness, shows Him to be God. It is God from God, Light from Light who disperses the darkness of sin. Christ is the true Light who comes to enlighten the world, plunged in darkness. By the mystery of the Word made Flesh, the light of God s glory has shined anew upon the eyes of our souls: so that while we acknowledge Him as God seen by men, we may be drawn by Him to love of the things unseen. On this day, the grace of God our Savior has appeared to all men, instructing us all to deny ungodliness and worldly desires that He might redeem us from all iniquity and might cleanse to Himself a people acceptable to His Father and zealous in good works. He is made like unto us that we may become like unto Him, and by His example we may be enabled to live a holy life. Thus we shall live justly, faithfully and godly in this world, looking for the blessed hope and coming of the glory of our God and Savior Jesus Christ at the dawn of the world to come. Wishing you all again the innumerable graces of a most blessed Christmas, while assuring each of you of my continued prayers in this new year in the reign of our Lord, 2014, I remain, Yours devotedly in the Sacred Infant Heart of Jesus, Abbé Matthew Weaver Brother Daniel Bowen writes My dearly beloved friends in Christ, The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept His offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew. This quote, from the first line of the recently released Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis entitled Evangelii Gaudium or The Joy of the Gospel, expresses perfectly what we believe as we call to mind what this most joyous season of the Nativity of our Lord is all about. Our Lord comes to us, we open our hearts to Him, and our life is transformed forever. It is this encounter that renews and keeps our aim true as we aim towards heaven, while we journey here with all our brothers and sisters on earth. Our Holy Father beautifully reminds us in word and in example that this joy of God s love is meant not just for us, but must be shared with others ~ shared particularly with those among our friends and family who may have stopped the active practice of their faith, as well as those who do not know Jesus Christ or who have always rejected him (EG 15). To put it simply: we must not keep our joy-filled faith to ourselves, but rather bring Jesus to everyone we meet. It is our Lord working His law of love through our open and generous hearts and hands that brings good will and peace on earth. We are Team Jesus let s not let Him, nor our world, down! Speaking of the world, as you read this I am presently in Rome, Italy! I am here with other friars from my Mercedarian religious family for about a month sharing in prayer, fellowship, study (and sightseeing) in preparation for our receiving our Solemn perpetual vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and redemption. No date has yet been set for my taking these vows, but when it is made known I will send you an update and an invitation. It will most likely be held at the parish that I am presently assigned to in the town of Le Roy, NY. I thank you for all your continual prayers and support, this season, as well as all these past years. On behalf of my religious family and myself, be assured of our kindest affection and prayers for you and all your loved ones. Please know that I will be holding every one of you, my beloved Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish family, in prayer in a very special way as I attend the Vigil Mass of the Nativity of the Lord at Saint Peter s Basilica (This is certainly one of the best Christmas gifts that I have ever received!). I thank God and I wish each and every one a most blessed and joyous Christmas season and happiest of New Years. God love and God bless one and all. To Jesus, through Our Lady of Mercy, Brother Daniel Bowen, O. de M.
