Good Friday Pontifical Collection Every year, each parish in the United States takes up a collection on Good Friday as designated by the Holy Father. This collection helps support the work of the Franciscans of the Holy Land. The money is used to care for the people and places of the Holy Land. Keeping Christianity alive in the Holy Land is an urgent need, and we are blessed each year to witness signs of hope in the generosity of Catholics. 3 PAGE 3 Did you know??? PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD S PASSION That we will be celebrating Tenebrae on Wednesday at 7:30 in the Church? Here is an explanation of the ritual of Tenebrae: Tenebrae is based upon the Roman tradition of the service: it is a vigil office of lessons and lights centered around the Passion and Death of Christ. It is a meditation in ritual upon the loving sacrifice of the Lord Jesus. The Lucernarium which opens the service is an ancient form of evening prayer. It is solemn thanksgiving for the light of Christ. This blessing which is sung over the Christ candle is taken from the Didache, circa 95 A.D., and establishes the centrality of Christ in the rest of the service and the Christ candle remains lighted throughout. The candles in the hearse are lighted at this time. During the course of the service they are extinguished. The gradual darkening of the sanctuary gives Tenebrae its particular character and tone as the complementary vigil to Holy Saturday. During the Easter Vigil one light sets everything alight; at Tenebrae there is a gradual darkness and silence, until the end, when only the Christ candle remains in silence. The three nocturns of the Roman lectionary amplify this Christological meditation. Christ is seen as the one who weeps over Jerusalem (The Lamentations of Jeremiah); the hoped for fulfillment of the psalmist (St. Augustine); the true sacrifice of a broken and contrite heart (Ps. 51,55,71); and the true and eternal High Priest (Letter to the Hebrews). The Old Testament images of the Lessons are answered by sections of the Passion narratives in the responsories. The Old Testament finds its meaning in the Paschal sacrifice of Christ. Ancient sources were used for the lectionary, the psalm collects and the responsories. This was done in order that the history of the Church s prayer become our prayer, and that we may be enriched by our inheritance of faith and life in the Roman tradition. PRE-BAPTISM CLASS... If you are expecting your first child, or have already welcomed a first child into your family, we invite you to attend our next Diocesan-required Pre-Baptism class to be held on Sunday, April 26, at 1 o clock in Mary s Room. Please call the Parish Office ( ) to register. Deadline is Wednesday, April 22. Thank you. PLEASE NOTE: The Parish Office will be closed from 5 p.m. Holy Thursday until 8:30 Tuesday morning, April 7. WE WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY EASTER! A very special Thank You to everyone who has donated cash or prizes to our Gala! Dinner tickets are SOLD OUT!! Raffle Tickets may be sold until April 9. We are pleased to announce our HONOREE in the category of TALENT Sister Kathleen Foster, O.S.U. Sister Kathleen has been a member of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland for 53 years. Sister s belief in the value of a Catholic education began early in her life: First, as a student at Holy Cross in Euclid, then at Villa Angela Academy and finally at St. John College, where she earned both an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in education. Sr. Kathleen s teaching career was carried out in numerous diocesan schools and was completed here at our Academy in She will be remembered for her patience, understanding and loving compassion to everyone she encountered. She was truly a blessing for our community. Since her retirement, Sister has continued her work with children. She now ministers as a caregiver at Up With Kids (on the campus of the former St. Margaret Mary Parish) in South Euclid. Sister cares for infants and toddlers and loves it!! Sister says of her years at Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy, I enjoyed those years, and I was enriched by the spiritual and academic environment in which I taught and the dedication of the entire parish community!
