2 PAGE 2 FROM THE PASTOR ASTOR S DESK My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Parish Office Hours Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. As you know, our parish is celebrating our 40 Hours Eucharistic Devotions this weekend. I hope that you have had or will take the opportunity to make a Holy Hour during this time. I also hope that this time will be a blessing for you, your families and for our parish. Please remember the Solemn Closing at 5:45 Sunday Evening. It is also a good time to remember that our Parish has Eucharistic Adoration 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday, in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. To sign up for an hour or for more information please call Kay Sutula ( ). I hope that many of you had the opportunity of joining us for our Pot Luck Dinner in celebration of St. Margaret Mary. My thanks to Gail Shirley and for everyone who worked on the event. Please remember that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be administered at all of the Masses next weekend. Anyone who is seriously ill or elderly may receive the Sacrament. We would ask that you consider bringing a loved one or neighbor who might ordinarily not able to come to church to Mass with you next weekend. When arriving for the anointing visit the sign up area in the vestibule of the Church where you will be given a holy card and brought to an area of special seating in the front of the Church. The Sacrament will be administered during the Mass and Holy Communion will be brought to you. May God s blessings be yours this week. Children tend to be naturally persistent; they will repeat the same request over and over until an exhausted parent gives in, and then later will feel guilty for not being stronger. The gospel encourages us not to lose heart. Our challenge is to be a GOOD ~ not perfect ~ PARENT If you are expecting the birth of your first child, or have already welcomed a first child into your family, we invite you to attend our next Pre-Baptism Class Sunday, October 24, at 1 p.m. in Mary s Room. This class is required by the Diocese of Cleveland of all parents who are requesting baptism of a first child or of those parents who did not attend a class before a previous child s baptism. 3 OCTOBER 17, 2010 PAGE 3 REFLECTING ON THE SCRIPTURES CRIPTURES Twenty-ninth ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time In his later life my father was a great pray-er. Though his eyesight was poor from macular degeneration he used a variety of prayer cards and little prayer booklets on a regular basis. He found comfort in those simple expressions of faith, and he didn't hesitate to tell people he was praying for this or that or for them. Most of dad's prayers were for health or for the well-being of family members. And while he didn't pray unceasingly, he did pray often. The Gospel talks about praying always "without becoming weary." Jesus goes on to use the example of a woman who is seeking justice from a judge who "neither feared God nor respected any human being." This dishonest judge gives in because of the woman's persistence. (I always thought it was a bit odd in a parable about prayer to place God in the position of a dishonest judge, but that's the story Jesus told!) In our age, we like quick fulfillment. Credit helps us buy things right away. Overnight shipping ensures we get it the next day. Instant messaging keeps us in touch at the moment. And Twitter lets us know what's happening even on the go. All of this spontaneity can spill over into our spiritual lives, where we suddenly expect an instantaneous answer to our prayers. It is as though if the prayer isn't answered tomorrow, then there is no use in bothering with it. Relationships don't really work that way. Since prayer is more about our relationship with God than about ordering from some heavenly Amazon.com, our prayer will need time to mature and grow. We keep praying without becoming weary to deepen our union with God Liturgical Publications Inc EEK READINGS FOR THE WEEK Sunday: Ex 17:8-13/2 Tm 3:14-4:2/Lk 18:1-8 Monday: 2 Tm 4:10-17b/Lk 10:1-9 Tuesday: Eph 2:12-22/Lk 12:35-38 Wednesday: Eph 3:2-12/Lk 12:39-48 Thursday: Eph 3:14-21/Lk 12:49-53 Friday: Eph 4:1-6/Lk 12:54-59 Saturday: Eph 4:7-16/Lk 13:1-9 Next Sunday: Sir 35:12-14, 16-18/2Tm 4:6-8, 16-18/Lk 18:9-14 Liturgical Publications Inc Collection for October 10, 2010: $10, Collection for October 11, 2009: $12, Direct Deposit for the month of September: $1, There are so many wonderful things happening at our parish. Won t you do what you can to help in our mission? Your generosity is sincerely appreciated. Father Ireland from the voices of the children The children have shared these Good Deeds for God, and they are exactly as the children presented them. Regrettably, space does not permit us to share all of the deeds submitted. Did not embarrass brother in front of new girlfriend. I played with someone even though I didn t want to. I was a good sport at soccer. I helped my mom feel a little better by giving her a hug. We extend a warm welcome to these newly registered parishioners: Karl & Shannon Faulhaber and their son, Devon Thank you, children, for sharing these. Please Call Jeannie Sfiligoj for details (216) As we continue our Respect Life theme this month, I would like to share with you the message we are teaching in our school. Our students are learning to show respect for other people by accepting their differences, treating them with kindness and courtesy, and remembering their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (combining religion and government). They know that harassing and teasing both are inappropriate behaviors. They are also learning that other people s ideas, feelings and thoughts are important. They know that respecting others begins by respecting themselves first. Love one another, Respect one another have always gone hand in hand here at Sacred Heart of Jesus. So I end with this quote from the gospel of St. John Chapter13, verses 4-35: I give you a new commandment: Love one another This is how all will know you for my disciples: your love for one another. GREGORY G THE GREAT CHURCH SITE OF A CONCERT C OF 16TH CENTURY SACRED POLYPHONY The Mignarda lute song duo, Donna Stewart & Ron Andrico, will present a concert of 16th-century sacred polyphony arranged for solo voice and lute at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 29, in the Church of St. Gregory the Great. Co-sponsored by Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and the Lyceum School, this concert marks the official Cleveland release of their CD, Harmonia Caelestis, and is an opportunity to hear a live performance of this very special music. Donna and Ron, long-time friends of the Lyceum School, are based in the Finger Lakes area of New York but have strong Cleveland connections, having met singing the Tridentine Mass at Immaculate Conception Church. Virtually every surviving source of lute music from the 16th century contains arrangements of sacred polyphony scattered among the dances and fantasias; and it was common practice to use the lute, with its delicate sound and portable size, in private daily devotional music. Even Palestrina was known to have worked out his masses and other compositions with lute in hand, reflecting the typical use of what has, in these times, become quite rare. This promises to be an unforgettable evening of marvelous music for those who enjoy classical music. Please come and bring your families and friends. If you have any questions or require any further information, please call the Headmaster of the Lyceum, Mr. Luke Macik, at
