May God grant them all eternal rest. HELPING HANDS FOR HAITI... HELPING HANDS FOR HAITI... Four weeks ago we had a very successful Cut-a-thon for our diaper project for the babies in Haiti. We did cut out over 100 diapers, and now we need help with the sewing. We divided the cut out diapers into packages of 10 and placed them in plastic bags with pre-cut Velcro. If you can sew a straight line and have a little time, we need your help. Please stop in Mary s Room and take a bag of 10, grab the simple sewing instructions, and take them home to complete. We have already made 350 diapers, but there is always a need for more. As long as we have helpers, we would like to continue this outreach program in our parish. Back by popular demand the Women s Guild will offer Pumpkin Bread for sale after all the weekend Masses on November We are in need of members to help bake, package and sell the loaves of pumpkin bread that we will be baking as a group in the cafeteria on Saturday, November 17 th. If you can volunteer for any of these activities, please call Bea Krajnak ( ). We appreciate any amount of time you can offer ~ many hands will make the job easy. The Guild s monthly meeting will be Tuesday, November 13 at 7p.m. in the St. Gregory the Great Meeting Room in the rectory. 3 NOVEMBER 11, 2012 P AGE 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK... My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I thought it appropriate to share this prayer for government written by Archbishop John Carroll. He was the cousin of Charles Carroll, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In 1789, Pope Pius VI named him the first bishop of the United States. (He would later become the first archbishop when the Diocese of Baltimore, Maryland, the mother diocese of the United States, was elevated to the status of archdiocese.) Archbishop Carroll wrote this prayer November 10, 1791, to be recited in parishes throughout his diocese: We pray, Thee O Almighty and Eternal God! Who through Jesus Christ hast revealed Thy glory to all nations, to preserve the works of Thy mercy, that Thy Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of Thy Name. We pray Thee, who alone art good and holy, to endow with heavenly knowledge, sincere zeal, and sanctity of life, our chief bishop, Pope Benedict XVI, the Vicar of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in the government of his Church; our own bishop, Richard, all other bishops, prelates, and pastors of the Church; and especially those who are appointed to exercise amongst us the functions of the holy ministry, and conduct Thy people into the ways of salvation. We pray Thee O God of might, wisdom, and justice! Through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed, assist with Thy Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the President of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to Thy people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of Thy divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety, and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty. We pray for his Excellency, the governor of this state, for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by Thy powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability. We recommend likewise, to Thy unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of Thy most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal. Finally, we pray to Thee, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of Thy servants departed who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents, relatives, and friends; of those who, when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased; of all benefactors who, by their donations or legacies to this Church, witnessed their zeal for the decency of divine worship and proved their claim to our grateful and charitable remembrance. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light, and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen. Kindly remember that we are still working hard to meet our goal for the Rooted in Faith-Forward in Hope campaign of the Diocese. Stewardship flowing from a personal and communal relationship to Christ holds a particular attraction to people. Philip Taraska and Rebecca Spanke Confessing with the lips indicates in turn that faith implies public testimony and commitment A Christian may never think of belief as a private act. Faith is choosing to stand with the Lord so as to live with Him. This standing with Him points towards an understanding of the reasons for believing. Faith precisely because it is a free act, also demands social responsibility for what one believes. The Church on the day of Pentecost demonstrates with utter clarity this public dimension of believing and proclaiming one s Faith fearlessly to every person. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit that makes us fit for mission and strengthens our witness, making it frank and courageous. Profession of faith is an act both personal and communitarian. It is the Church that is the primary subject of faith. In the faith of the Christian community, each individual receives baptism, an effective sign of entry into the people of believers in order to obtain salvation. As we read in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: `I believe is the faith of the Church professed personally by each believer, principally during baptism. `We believe is the faith of the Church confessed by the bishops assembled in council or more generally by the liturgical assembly of believers. `I believe is also the Church, our Mother, responding to God by faith as She teaches us to say both `I believe and `we believe. Evidently, knowledge of the content of faith is essential for giving one s own assent, that is to say for adhering fully with intellect and will to what the Church proposes. Knowledge of faith opens a door into the fullness of the saving mystery revealed by God. The giving of assent implies that, when we believe, we freely accept the whole mystery of faith, because the guarantor of its truth is God who reveals Himself and allows us to know His mystery of love. On the other hand, we must not forget that in our cultural context, very many people, while not claiming to have the gift of faith are nevertheless sincerely searching for the ultimate meaning and definitive truth of their lives and of the world. This search is an authentic preamble to the faith, because it guides people onto the path that leads to the mystery of God. Human reason, in fact, bears within itself a demand for what is perennially valid and lasting. This demand constitutes a permanent summons, indelibly written into the human heart, to set out to find the One whom we would not be seeking had He not already set out to meet us. To this encounter, faith invites us and it opens us in fullness. 11. In order to arrive at a systematic knowledge of the content of the faith, all can find in the Catechism of the Catholic Church a precious and indispensable tool. It is one of the most important fruits of the Second Vatican Council. (Paragraph 11 to be continued next week.) ACADEMY NEWS MR. WILLIAM DIBACCO November -- Works of Charity Month We have 3 charitable events in this month, 2 of which are allschool service projects. The Annual Food Drive for the Poor was this past week. We collected more than 20 boxes of food which Student Council members and moderators will deliver to the Bishop Cosgrove Center next Thursday, November 15. It was wonderful to watch the process of collecting, packing and delivering the food. The generous response by the Academy community and the hard work of the students was very rewarding to experience. Students will have a $1 dress down-day on Tuesday, the 20 th. The money will be sent to the Red Cross to be added to the relief fund for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The next service project will be in association with the parish Giving Tree Project. Details will be mentioned in an upcoming bulletin. How blessed are we that our students (and parents) always find the time and heart to help those in need. Academy parents please note: The next PTC meeting is this Monday, the 12 th, at 7 p. m. in the PFC building. Come share your thoughts and companionship with other Academy parents. Grade 8 parents are to attend the Confirmation meeting on Wednesday, the 14 th, at 7 p. m. in the Church Hall. Every day may not be good, but there s something good in every day. 6 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 6 Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Commitment Weekend This weekend marks the conclusion of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish s participation in the diocesan wide effort, Rooted in Faith Forward in Hope. This initiative provides an opportunity for all of us to work together in support of Catholic Education, Clergy Formation and Retirement, Faith Formation throughout the diocese, Catholic Charities and our own parish. Rooted in Faith-Forward in Hope is an effort that will help secure the future of the Church for many generations. We are not alone in this worthy cause. All 174 parishes are working in unison to reach a goal of $125 million, to be completed through five year commitments. The effort throughout the diocese has been very successful with over 35,000 families supporting the initiative. Over the past several months, Sacred Heart of Jesus has raised over $526,000 from just 109 families! This success is with the participation of just 11% of our parish community! Thank you to every family that has already participated! If every parish family can consider an equal sacrifice, according to their own situation, Sacred Heart of Jesus has the opportunity to reach our parish goal and invest in the future of our local church, as well as the Church of Northeast Ohio. We hope to use the monies returned to Sacred Heart of Jesus to provide a conveyance that would make the parish hall and, potentially, the choir loft accessible for any parishioners with physical limitations. Also, we intend to provide for the children of our parish, both current and future, by starting an education endowment fund. Our present success is a wonderful accomplishment that would not have been possible without the generosity of our parishioners and the hard work of our volunteers. This success is a reminder that we are blessed with a strong church community we can all be proud of. It is our hope that every parishioner will be able to make a decision today to support this effort which will have a profound impact on the Church for years to come. Next weekend we will provide another opportunity to participate for those parishioners who still need more time to make their decision. To learn more about this important historic campaign please visit: Participation Leads to Abundance There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many? Jesus said, Have the people recline. (John 6:9-10a) Sometimes it feels like there will never be enough, but Jesus teaches us that with faith in God there is abundance. Instead of panic, Jesus has the people recline. Isn t that interesting? Rather than fear and pessimism, Jesus inspires peace and participation. We ve already begun to see this in the work of the Campaign. Despite concerns about a challenging economy, the faithful throughout the Diocese have come forward in a participatory way, sharing their resources and loving their Church. May God bless our community of believers for following Jesus mission to spread the Gospel message in Northeast Ohio.
