1 Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of Rome. This is not St. Peter's, but it is the Pope's cathedral. Also called the Church of the Holy Savior or the Church of St. John the Baptist, it was the baptism church of ancient Rome. It was built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a universal celebration in honor of the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput) as a sign of love for

2 NOVEMBER 9, 2014 PAGE 2 From the Pastor s Desk... My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, At the time of this writing, I have not yet been to LeRoy for the Diaconate Ordination of Brother Daniel Bowen; so next week I will have all the details. Suffice it to say, we are all very proud of him. FROM I look forward THE PASTOR S to being present DESK at his ordination.... Be sure to check out your parish pastoral council. Their pictures are above the water fountain in the vestibule of the church. If you have any suggestions, be sure to chat with them. You will remember that we had a beautiful candlelight procession with the Diocesan Pilgrim Statue on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Although Father Winkel and I could not be there because we were at a Convocation with all of the priests of the Diocese, I know that Deacon Chordas, Dennis Razayeski, and the Knights of Columbus did a wonderful job. Did you know that we also have a Parish Pilgrim Statue? It comes to us from St. Margaret Mary and was part of an older tradition that was part of that parish. I would like to restore the tradition of the statue visiting the homes of our families. If you would like to have the Pilgrim Statue visit your home for a week, please call the rectory and reserve a time. You will also notice a couple of new additions to the parish. In the Blessed Sacrament Chapel is a beautiful relief of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Margaret Mary. This relief was in the Church of St. Margaret Mary and now has a prominent place within Sacred Heart of Jesus. You will also see a new oriental rug in the sanctuary and also one in the St. Margaret Mary Room of the rectory. These beautiful additions are a gift from the Weaver Family. Thank you so very much. May God s blessings be yours this week. Father Ireland Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Pastor Fr. Dave R. Ireland, S.T.D. Senior Parochial Vicar Fr. Thomas J.Winkel, MDiv. 5 PAGE 5 MEA CULPA MEA MAXIMA CULPA It has come to our attention that 3 events escaped the scrutiny of the proofreaders of the November parish & school activities calendar which was included in last week s bulletin. We apologize for these oversights. Please make note: On Tuesday, November 11, the Women s Guild meeting was omitted. They will gather at 7 p.m. in the St. Gregory the Great meeting room in the basement of the rectory. On Wednesday, November 12, the meeting for parents of students preparing for Confirmation was omitted. That meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the Church Hall (aka Knights Hall). It is a mandatory meeting. Parents who fail to attend will be required to make special arrangements to meet privately with Father Ireland. On Monday, November 17, the meeting of the St. Vincent depaul Society will take place at 7 p.m. in Mary s Room. THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA ACADEMY NEWS... Dear Parishioners, This Thursday, November 13, is our Fall Parent-Teacher Conference Day. There will be an early dismissal at 1:30 p.m. Conferences are from 2-9 p.m. There is NO School on Friday, November 14. We are holding our first Scholastic Book Fair of the year this week-end. It will be set up in rooms 1 and 2 of the Parish Family Center. There is an important Confirmation meeting for the parents of our 8 th graders on Wednesday, November 12, at 7 p.m. in the Church Hall. This is their first step in preparation for their reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation. May God bless them and watch over them as they begin their journey for their big day in May. Please keep them in your prayers. We will say extra prayers on Veterans Day, Tuesday November 11, to honor all our veterans of war, both deceased and living. God bless those families who have suffered from the casualty of war and strife. Lord, grant me a heart of compassion so burdened for others needs, that I will show them mercy in attitudes, in words, and in deeds. God Bless You, William DiBacco, Principal Attention Parishioners: Won t you please consider joining the Cub Scouts of the parish in an activity to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Beginning next week, the scouts will be collecting gently used hand tools (or new ones you may have purchased or received as a gift that are still in the package). These will be given to Habitat for Humanity for the use of their volunteers. If you have larger items that could be used in the building of homes, please call the Parish Office ( ) before bringing them to the church. There will be receptacles available in the back of the Church to receive your donations. Thank you for your generous response to this very worthwhile organization. The Book Fair has arrived in the Parish Family center. Please stop by today or tomorrow after all the morning Masses until 1 p.m. Come and browse through the wide variety of books on display.
