2 PAGE 2 A WORD FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR... This Monday, February 20, Cleveland Indians pitchers and catchers report to Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. By this coming Thursday, February 23, all of the remaining players are to report to the Indians Spring Training Camp in Goodyear, Arizona. On Saturday, February 25, the first Indians full-squad workout begins. The Tribe s spring training will finally culminate with the Indians season opener on Thursday, April 5: The Cleveland Indians at home at Progressive Field will take on the Toronto Blue Jays. From our ball team s first reporting at Goodyear Ballpark to the Indians opener at Progressive Field there is a span of forty-five days. And for Christians, while we sing of the Forty Days of Lent, the fact is that from Ash Wednesday, February 22, to the first celebration of Easter on Holy Saturday night, April 7, there are forty-six days. Of course the season of Lent will have its rules and regulations along with day-to-day routines for a higher purpose than playing profession baseball and a quest for playing in and winning the World Series. For we who are practicing Catholics, we will move through this holy season of Lent by performing acts of penance, fasting and alms giving. Our goal is to come closer to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as we prepare to celebrate Easter Sunday on April 8. In this weekend s bulletin there is a Catholic Lenten Calendar, with a Daily Scripture and Reflections for the Sacred Season. On the lower half of the reverse side of the calendar there is a box showing the rules for Fasting and Abstinence for Catholics during Lent. You may also refer to a box elsewhere in this weekend s bulletin that contains fast and abstinence obligations for Catholics. Note also our parish s 7 p.m. Stations of the Cross and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on ALL Friday evenings of Lent. Last year I introduced our Parish Lenten Series by referring to the three talks that I gave that year on alternating Mondays as a form of penance. Of course you know that doing penance does not necessarily have to mean giving up something. A penance could be doing something extra such as coming to this year s Lenten Series. (Of course to give up your time watching TV, to give up your computer or some other electronic gizmo time in order to come to the Lenten Series, is a form of self-denial.) This year s Lenten Series will take place on five consecutive Mondays of Lent. (There will not be a presentation on Monday of Holy Week.) For the first two Monday evenings I will remind you of the great gift of Jesus and His Sacraments. The next two Mondays, our Deacon will give more philosophical, yet down-to-earth presentations on God vs. gods and How to be a Catholic Warrior. The fifth Monday will be a question and answer night shared by the Deacon and myself using questions that YOU submit to us over the preceding four Monday evenings. Please check elsewhere in the bulletin for the Ash Wednesday schedule and other important information. FASTING IS REQUIRED ON ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY FOR THOSE 18 TO 59. The Origin of Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday entered the calendar in the early sixth century when the desire arose to have forty actual days of fasting before Easter. Sundays were never fast days, so to get to forty, one had to add four days to the six weeks of Lent. In the Christian lands along the Rhine River the devotional practice of imposing ashes arose as people imitated what they heard in Bible passages such as 2 Samuel 13:19, Ezekiel 27:30, Job 2:12, and Jonah 3:6. What was once a private devotion came to be practiced publicly in the eighth century, and by the year 1000 it was commonplace in many celebrations at the beginning of Lent. The distribution of ashes was formally added to the Missal at Rome in the thirteenth century and this ancient symbol of repentance is now widely used among most Christian denominations at the beginning of Lent. Father Ireland...from the voices of the children The children have shared these Good Deeds for God, and they are exactly as the children presented them. Regrettably, space does not permit us to share all of the deeds submitted. I helped my Grandma. I played with my baby sister when I wanted to write a book. I helped Mama make cookies for the bake sale. Thank you, children, for sharing these. DIOCESE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS FOR RITE OF ELECTION CEREMONIES AT THE CATHEDRAL NEXT SUNDAY... The Rite of Election of Catechumens and Call to Continuing Conversion of Candidates will be held on Sunday, February 26, at 5:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. The Diocese is asking for volunteers to act as ushers. Ushers should arrive at 4:30 p.m. and assist until the beginning of the Mass at 5:30 p.m. This is a wonderful time for parishioners of Sacred Heart of Jesus to witness the commitment made by hundreds of people from all parts of the Diocese as they continue their journey of Faith in the RCIA Process. WILLIAM DIBACCO, PRINCIPAL Principal s Corner Last Sunday, our 4-year-old Pre-School students sang the National Anthem prior to the Lake Erie Monsters hockey game. They did an excellent job. They sang loudly, made no mistakes, smiled, and wowed the crowd. I am very proud of them. Thank you Ms. Olp and Mrs. Benedict for your efforts in this endeavor. Also last week on Thursday, students in grades 1, 3, 5, and 6 presented a musical program under the direction of our Music teacher Mrs. Freas. These very talented boys and girls provided quite an enjoyable performance. Monday of this week, students will observe Presidents Day by enjoying a FREE day from classes. On Wednesday, February 22, we will attend the 8:45 a.m. Mass for Ash Wednesday. The Academy Review Group has scheduled three very important parent-only meetings these next two weeks. Attendance at one of these sessions by at least one parent or guardian is mandatory. Important information regarding tuition and staffing will be shared. Continued financial support of the parish, involvement in school events and a positive outlook are key ingredients to a bright future for the Academy. At least one parent is required to attend one of the following sessions. The same information will be shared at each.
