2 PAGE 2 FROM THE PASTOR... My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, 1545 South Green Road South Euclid, OH Phone: Fax: As we begin, once again, Ordinary Time, let us strive to make this season anything but ordinary in the everyday sense of the term. Let us strive to enter into the mystery of our faith with even greater zeal and love for Almighty God. To that end, I would like to share with you one of the recommendations from the Vatican II Sunday Missal, published by the Daughters of St. Paul: Bring out your religious values on the Lord s Day. The ideal Sunday is one spent in re-creating one s highest and best values. Should it happen that you have had to shorten your personal prayers or devotions during the week, now you have a chance to make this up in your private devotions. This is, of course, an ideal day for family prayer. An excellent tradition is hearing the children ~ at breakfast or at dinner, asking each of them to repeat as much of the homily as is remembered. This is the proper day to visit shrines. This is the day when many groups within the Church are able to have days of recollection, spiritual sessions, prayers in common, etc. Though Sunday Vespers are now not usual, the idea of special Sunday prayers remains a cherished Catholic tradition. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our children who received the Sacrament of Penance for the first time this Saturday. Boys and girls, always remember the tremendous love that Jesus has for you. Receive His Love and Forgiveness often through this beautiful Sacrament. Finally, please keep me and the other parishioners in your prayers next weekend as we travel to Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life. May God s blessings be yours this week. As we begin this New Year, might we strive to be ever more generous with the parish. YOUR generosity helps make the work done here possible. Thank you for your kind consideration....from the voices of the children Father Ireland The children have shared these Good Deeds for God, and they are exactly as the children presented them. Regrettably, space does not permit us to share all of the deeds submitted. Not lying when I knew my friend was. I practiced gutar alot and obeyed my parents. I welcomed a new student in my class. God cares about everyone I learned. Thank you, children, for sharing these. Father Ireland KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS... The general meeting of the Knights of Columbus will be this coming Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Knights Hall (basement of the Church). All Knights are encouraged to attend. THE CARING CONNECTION... This apostolate was developed to serve as a prayer support for parishioners who are experiencing personal crises of any kind. If you would like to be part of this apostolate or if you have needs you would like to have included in the prayer intentions for our volunteers, call Tricia Brunton (216, ). Please continue to pray for all men and women serving in the military in foreign lands. May God keep them safe and may they return to their families soon. Almighty God, hear our prayers for the repose of the souls of Mary Palladino James Fox who died recently, and grant Your comfort and peace to their families and friends who now mourn their deaths. CONFIRMATION CLASSES FOR ADULTS For Roman Catholics, the Sacrament of Confirmation is one of three Sacraments necessary for full initiation into the Church. Along with the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit received in this Sacrament come certain rights and privileges. Among the most commonly used is the privilege to serve as a Godparent for Baptism or a Sponsor for Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation should also precede entering into marriage. Adults (18 years and older) who have been baptized and have received some formal religious education along with First Communion, but for whatever reason have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation and wish to do so, are invited to attend a series of classes to prepare for the Sacrament. Preparation for Confirmation is a joint effort with our cluster parish, Holy Rosary, and the classes will be held at that parish in the Adult Ed Room on four consecutive Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. The dates are January 18 and 25 and February 1 and 8. Participants will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation here at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish along with our eighth grade students at the Academy and in our PSR program during the 5 p.m. Mass on Sunday, April 22, when Bishop Quinn will come to confer the Sacrament. If you wish to attend these classes at Holy Rosary Parish, please call Anne DeMarco at She will be happy to answer your questions and take your registration. You will need to bring a recent copy of your Baptismal Certificate to the first session on January 18. Please remember to use our recycle bins near the Credit Union to place your newspapers and other paper (but not cardboard) items. That paper is returned to us in other paper (namely, the green, spendable kind). Every sheet counts!!! During 2011, our parish received $ from our participation in recycling. Thank you!! And make a New Year s promise to bundle your newspapers and bring them with you to Church in It s $$$ in our pockets to help pay the bills.

5 JANUARY 15, 2012 PAGE 5 SCRIPTURE REFLECTION... Second Sunday in Ordinary Time We're introduced this week to an unknown disciple in John's Gospel. Two disciples are followers of John the Baptist. When Jesus walks by, John points him out to them and says, "Behold, the Lamb of God." These two go and follow Jesus and spend the day with him; and we find out in today's Gospel that one of the two was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, who then goes and gets Simon Peter and brings him to Jesus as well. So now there are three who will follow Jesus: Peter, Andrew, and this unknown disciple. As we'll discover in John's Gospel during Lent and the Easter season, this third person is the beloved disciple, the Gospel writer's stand-in for every Christian who follows Christ. John wrote into his Gospel the beloved disciple to highlight the fact that every believer encounters Christ. His presence among us is not some past event. Christ is with us now, and we meet Him in the breaking of the bread, in the poor at our door, and in the neighbor we encounter. And Christ is present in the Word of God, the Scriptures. There is a tried-and-true method of biblical prayer that capitalizes on this understanding of the presence of Christ. Take a Gospel story and place yourself in it as one of the characters. Read it and reflect on it as though you were in the setting. For example, with today's Gospel you could imagine that you are Andrew. You are chatting with John the Baptist when he points out Jesus. There is something about that man that immediately attracts you. What is it? Can you imagine that in your prayer? You and your friend go and spend the day with him. Imagine what took place. What entranced you that you had to go and find your brother, Simon, and bring him to Jesus? Let your prayer unfold, and see where it leads you Liturgical Publications Inc DISCOVERY DAYS AT THE CENTER FOR PASTORAL LEADERSHIP... Each year the Diocesan Vocations Office offers a program for 7th and 8th grad students at the Center for Pastoral Leadership (CPL) in Wickliffe. 6 PAGE 6 ACADEMY NEWS MR. WILLIAM DIBACCO, PRINCIPAL The Academy was closed Friday the 13 th because of a mandatory Diocesan in-service on Religion. The teachers are working toward their professional development and will meet 4 times this year. This 5-hour in-service is their second class of 4 this school year. I commend my faculty for their dedication to increasing their knowledge and teaching skills for the teaching of religion. The students will be off Monday, the 16 th as well to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Congratulations to and God s Blessing upon our Second Graders. They made their First Confession this Saturday, January 14. They were so very reverent and excited. Please continue to pray for them as they prepare for their First Holy Communion on May 6. The second Quarter of this school year ends on January 20 th, and we will be officially at the half-way point. Report Cards will be sent home on Monday, January 30 th. The end of January promises to full of excitement here at the Academy. Catholic Schools Week begins on Sunday, January 29 th with the 11:30 Mass. This year s theme is; Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service. We, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy, live these themes daily. Children are taught: FAITH: not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. ACADEMICS: which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, helping each child reach his or her potential. SERVICE: the giving of one s time and effort to help others is taught as an expression of both faith and good citizenship. Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy will host an OPEN HOUSE from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, the 29 th. Come and visit the Academy and see what excellent work our students have accomplished. As you tour the building, see our Computer lab, Art studio, Library, Music room, Gymnasium and Cafeteria. Look for more Catholic Schools Week activities/events in next week s Church bulletin. Mr. DiBacco Principal Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. Proverbs 4:13 THEY RE BACK...DONUT SUNDAYS Many of you can remember the years when we celebrated the First Weekend of the month with coffee and donuts after the Masses. The goodies were great but the time to be with our fellow parishioners was really the main attraction...kind of a Meet, Greet and Eat event. With the blossoming of our parish through the merger with Saint Margaret Mary, and many new families registering, it seems an appropriate time to reinstate this parish activity. So mark your calendars for the first weekend of February when we will once again offer Donut Sundays. A subcommittee of our parish Stewardship Committee has agreed to take responsibility for coordinating this activity. The format will change a bit. Instead of just one group having the responsibility, it has been agreed to rotate responsibility among the various parish organizations who will handle set-up, clean-up, purchasing donuts, making coffee, and acting as hosts and hostesses. Also, we plan to test out the popularity of running this event after the 4 o clock Mass on Saturday evening. The Sunday times are as they were: after the 8 o clock, 10 o clock and 11:30 o clock Masses. Join your fellow parishioners get to know more of our wonderful people check out the FREE information which will be provided by the sponsoring organization and, most importantly, take the opportunity to participate in the LIFE of our parish. REMEMBER: GREAT THINGS HAPPEN WHEN GOD MIXES WITH MAN AND A BIT OF FELLOWSHIP, SUGAR AND CAFFINE TOO! SEE YOU IN KNIGHTS HALL (AKA CHURCH HALL) ON EITHER SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4 OR SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5 The goodies are FREE however, a donation to defray the costs of the food and beverage service will be sincerely appreciated. to the Parish We extend a warm Sacred Heart of Jesus welcome to these newly-registered members: Nancy Copky Lawrence & Bonnie Dorod Jim & Anne Marie Hammerhofer and their daughter Elaine Brian Hersko Christopher Orlando We look forward to praying with you at Mass and meeting you at any of the parish events that are coming up in the next 6 months.
