Thank you for your patience and understanding concerning our parking limitations this weekend and for your kind consideration of the needs of our members who have some difficulties with mobility. I do hope that you will spend some wonderful time at our Festival. As you know, the food and fellowship found at our annual Festival cannot be matched. I look forward to seeing you! Words can hardly express my great thankfulness to the staff and for all of you who are working so hard to make this festival a great success. It is hard work, but very rewarding, knowing the good that you are doing for our parish. Thank you so very much and may God bless you abundantly for your kindness. We miss Maria Marrali and Mary Palladino who worked so very hard for so many years at the Festival. They were always so dedicated to our parish. REFLECTION ON THE SCRIPTURES Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The human history of religious experience is filled with holy men and women who have left everything to seek a life that unites them more closely with the divine. We can admire, and even applaud, people like Francis of Assisi, Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, or certain Hindu holy men. Many religious traditions have people who take up a mission, which takes precedence over any personal concern for fame or success. And while many of us might revere individuals that are so committed to their mission (and we might even contribute to the support of their work), very few of us would really leave all that we have right now to emulate someone like St. Francis or Mother Teresa, even though such a thing is clearly possible through the religious orders that have sprung up following their inspiration. The Gospel this weekend describes the clear mission that Jesus gives to the Twelve. They went forth to preach repentance, drive out demons, and cure the sick. These were their tasks. The end of today's Gospel story tells us that they did have some success in what they were to do. Demons were expelled and many of the sick were cured. We may be reluctant to consider that the mission of the Twelve is our mission as well. After all, who doesn't want to have a second tunic (or, to put it in the clothing options of today, a second pair of pants or another dress)? But the mission isn't really about seeing how much we can live without. Rather, it is accepting the authority that Jesus gives to His followers. For most of us, that rests in sharing the good news of what Jesus means to us, being attentive to the sick and their needs, and reaching out to those who are afflicted by demons of loneliness, despair, fear, and anxiety. Father Ireland FAMILY PERSPECTIVES... Today s Gospel reminds us that we have been given authority over the unclean spirits that constantly invade our homes and families. The list of unclean spirits includes contempt, envy, deceit, violence, substance abuse, hatred, pornography and disrespect. 5 JULY 15, 2012 P AGE 5 The FEST, our 12 th annual Catholic Family FESTival, will take place on Sunday, August 5, 2012, on the grounds of the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe (home of Borromeo and Saint Mary Seminaries). It s the perfect summer family day! In your charity, please pray for the repose of the souls of William R. Baltitas & Donald J. Paduano who died recently. Let us ask God to grant His comfort and peace to their family and friends who now mourn their deaths. Come and hear nationally renowned Christian artists Switchfoot, Peter Furler and Mandisa, along with local Christian bands. The day also includes wonderful activities, crafts, and displays for the whole family. There s plenty of family-friendly affordable food, along with close, accessible parking. This amazing Catholic family day begins at noon and ends with an outdoor Mass celebrated at 8 p.m. by presider Bishop Roger Gries, OSB. After Mass, enjoy an amazing fireworks display. Please help us bring JOY to the world at FEST A Blessing to One Another People of all faiths come together to share in a historic exhibition: "A Blessing to One Another: Pope John Paul II and the Jewish People." This exhibit, currently on display at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, includes photos, video footage, documents, and artifacts recording the extraordinary contributions of Pope John Paul II to relations between the Catholic and Jewish faiths. The exhibit draws its name from the Pope's 1993 appeal marking the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising: "As Christians and Jews, following the example of the faith of Abraham, we are called to be a blessing to the world. This is the common task awaiting us. It is therefore necessary for us, Christians and Jews, to first be a blessing to one another." The exhibit will run through August 5th at the Maltz Museum, 2929 Richmond Rd., in Beachwood. For information call or visit maltzmuseum.org. Thank you to everyone who contributed materials for diapers for the babies of Haiti. You have proven, once again, that our parish is very generous when it comes to helping the needy! Now we are ready for the cutters and sewers. There are patterns and directions for making the diapers available in Mary s Room. All of the material has been sorted into two categories: Fabric for diaper shell Fabric for the soaker part of the diaper If you are able to assist by cutting and/or sewing a few diapers, please stop by Mary s Room and pick up your materials AND the patterns and directions you will need. Mary s Room is accessible from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on the weekends from 9 a.m. until after the last Mass. Please have the completed diapers either cut or sewn and returned to Mary s Room within 2 weeks if possible. Our goal is to have a few hundred ready to be shipped to Haiti by the end of August. OFF TO THE HOLY LAND 4/1/2013 Father Ireland will be flying to the Holy Land and Italy with a tour group from the U.S. Would you like to join him? We have begun to compile a Parishioner Skills Inventory for Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. While we have some information (much of it from the time of your initial registration with the parish), we want to update and expand the database. Even if nothing has changed for you, we would appreciate your completing and returning the clip-off below either via the collection basket or personally to the Parish Office. Periodically we contact parishioners to ask them to help meet a particular need at the parish or the Academy. This help may be in the form of volunteering, consulting on a specific project, helping to acquire services at discounted prices, offering your professional skills, or volunteering your time and/or materials for plumbing, electrical, painting, computers, etc. While there may not be an immediate need, it is good to have this information should the parish need arise.
