Would you be so kind as to notify the rectory if you have a spouse, child or grandchild serving in the military? Please give us their name and the branch of the service that they are in. St. Dominic, the great preacher of the Faith, was known to always carry with him the Gospel of St. Matthew and the Letters of St. Paul. It is said that he read them so often that he knew them by heart. In that same spirit, I came across the following that presents some interesting food for thought: What if we began to treat our Bible the way we treat our cell phone? What if we Carried it with us everywhere? Turned back to get it if we forgot it? Checked it for messages throughout the day? Used it in case of emergencies? Spent an hour or more using it each day? Have you extended a warm welcome to someone who has been away to return to the Church or someone new to join the Church? Please remember that the work of evangelization belongs to each of us. Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Melody Choir Would you like to sing In the Choir but are unable to commit to weekday evening rehearsals? We have a solution! Join the newly formed Sacred Heart of Jesus Paris Melody Choir! We will meet in Mary s Room at 9:15 a.m. every Sunday and sing at the 10 a.m. Mass. Father Ireland FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS Next Saturday, September 14, the Church celebrates the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross which commemorates two historical events: the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, and the dedication in 335 of the basilica and shrine built on Calvary by Constantine, which mark the site of the Crucifixion. The basilica, named the Martyrium, and the shrine, named the Calvarium, were destroyed by the Persians in 614. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher which now stands on the site was built by the crusaders in However the feast, more than anything else, is a celebration and commemoration of God's greatest work: his salvific death on the Cross and His Resurrection, through which death was defeated and the doors to Heaven opened. The entrance antiphon for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is: We should glory in the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ for He is our Salvation, our Life, and our Resurrection; through Him we are saved and made free. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process by which adults who have been baptized into another Christian religion or who have never been baptized are received into the Catholic Church on Holy Saturday. 6 PAGE 6 ACADEMY NEWS MR. WILLIAM DIBACCO, PRINCIPAL Dear Parishioners, Week two started off a bit chilly, weather-wise. The students, however, continue to warm up to their new studies. There has always been a warm in our Academy, and the kindness exhibited by our students is a pleasure. The students attended their first school community Mass together on Friday, September 6 at 8:45 a.m. The student body will observe the Feast of St. Gregory the Great. The actual feast day was September 3. Are you a parent of an Academy student? Join our PTC and become involved. They would love to see more parents at their monthly meetings. First meeting of the new school year is on Monday, the 9 th, at 7 p.m. in the PFC. The Faculty will come together as one and celebrate the Eucharist on September 15, which is Catechetical Sunday. HELPING HANDS FOR HAITI Our parish is in its second year of the diaper project for the babies in Haiti. Because of the devastation from the earthquake there, the people have no room to dispose of diapers, so they must use cloth diapers for their babies. These are given to the moms of newborns when they leave the hospital. To date, we have made over 1,000 diapers from donated materials. Currently we have a desperate need for the terry cloth used for the soakers. Can you help out? Maybe you have some usable fabrics hiding away in the attic, basement, or a cedar chest. Also needed are volunteers to prepare the materials, assemble and sew these diapers. Materials and very simple patterns and instruction sheets are available in Mary s Room in the back of the Church. You can stop in after Mass (or any time the Church is open) to pick up your patterns and supply of fabric. If you need any further information, please call Jane Jagels- Romeo at
