1 PAGE Respect Life Prayer Dear God, we see life cheapened every day through abortion and other forms of abuse, through terrorism, and other acts of violence, and through neglect of children, the poor, and the elderly. In a world of plenty, we can forget that there is nothing more precious than human life. Give us the grace to see how we can make a difference, and encourage change in our culture. When we are discouraged, remind us of the Catholic monk Telemachus who stopped the gladiator games with an act of charity. Inspire us with the stories of Mary and other mothers of unexpected pregnancies, who knew that every child is a gift of God's grace and is wanted by you in this world. Encourage conviction in the hearts of those who do not yet know or understand that a desire for choice is no reason to end any life and that you desire that all life come only to a natural end in you. Amen

3 OCTOBER 3, 2010 PAGE 3 REFLECTING ON THE SCRIPTURES CRIPTURES 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time We just celebrated the feast of the Guardian Angels on Saturday. Thinking about guardian angels was likely not one of the top priorities on our agenda. Yet the feast comes and goes each year on October 2 in honor of those spiritual beings who watch over and protect in realms beyond our physical apprehension. Angels worship and serve God, and we have almost no awareness in our daily lives of their presence. The reality of angelic presence is not what is so often portrayed in cartoons as little beings sitting on one's shoulder. Rather, it is the deep understanding of the abiding presence of God: that God cares for each one of us individually and that God's providence protects us. Like the servants in today's Gospel, that go about their business day by day, so do the angels who serve at God's throne. Unknown and unheralded, they do the bidding of the Almighty. As servants of God on this earth, we are often asked to be angel investors as well, not by turning over money to some entrepreneur in hopes of gaining a profit, but through reaching out to those in need and helping them with our talent and treasure. Much like guardian angels, our good and helpful actions toward others - our care and protection of the least ones - is truly service offered to God. And like the angels, we do it quietly, not seeking recognition, but being faithful servants Liturgical Publications Inc EEK READINGS FOR THE WEEK Sunday: Hb 1:2-3; 2:2-4/2 Tm 1:6-8, 13-14/Lk 17:5-10 Monday: Gal 1:6-12/Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Gal 1:13-24/Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Gal 2:1-2, 7-14/Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Gal 3:1-5/Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Gal 3:7-14/Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Gal 3:22-29/Lk 11:27-28 Next Sunday: 2 Kgs 5:14-17/2 Tm 2:8-13/Lk 17:11-19 Liturgical Publications Inc Respect Life Sunday Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 3, South Green Road South Euclid, OH Phone: Fax: sacredheartofjesusparish.org website: Fr. 6 PAGE 6 WHY DO I NEED TO REGISTER? WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BECOMING AN OFFICIAL MEMBER EMBER?????? Why is it so important that we register in a parish? Isn't it good enough that we go to Mass? Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend a particular parish they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are still signed up under their parents. But membership requires signing up, formally enrolling yourself in a parish. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social and ministerial activities of your parish. Your registration affects the parish in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses, confessions and devotions are planned and scheduled. Registration shows you belong. It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for taxes. Most importantly, it lets the parish count on you, to call on you to assist in its mission Liturgical Publications Inc Registering in your parish is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of your parish. ATTENTION BRIDES & GROOMS ROOMS-TO TO-BE RIDES & G PLANNING Beginning in January of 2011, Saturday weddings taking place at Saint Gregory the TO MARRY Great Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus IN 2011 OR Parish will be scheduled at either 11:00 a.m. AFTER? or 1 p.m. Please make a note of this before you arrange for any other details of your wedding day. Weddings that have been scheduled for 2011 already will be at the times agreed upon when the couple contacted the priest. This change has become necessary due to the rearranging of the time of Confessions and the Saturday Vigil Mass time. Thank you for your understanding. Don t forget we have recycle bins at the East end of our property to receive your PAPER ONLY donations. Your old paper makes paper (the spending kind) for our parish & school. Collection for September 26, 2010: $10, Collection for September 27, 2009: $11, Members of the Carmona Caravan, Order of the Alhambra With to thank you for your generosity. Their collection Last week amounted to $ Please continue to be generous so that we can continue the work of the Church in our area Father Ireland from the voices of the children The children have shared these Good Deeds for God. ; and they are exactly as the children presented them. Regrettably, space does not permit us to share all of the deeds submitted. I was kind to my cousin when her grandpa died. I asked my mom if she was ok when she was sad. I helped a person at the book store Sharing my bear with my sister. Thank you, children, for sharing these. Father Ireland SACRED HEART OF JESUS YOUTH address ~ youthministry@sacredheartofjesusparish.org Attention Teens: The Youth Group is planning to participate in the Silent Stand for Life this Sunday, October 3, at 1 p.m. We will gather in the parish parking lot at 12:30 and proceed to the intersection of Green and Mayfield Roads shortly before 1 p.m. Please come and give witness to your belief in the sanctity of ALL life ~ from conception to natural death. Please come and Bring a friend!! MARKET DAY NEWS Did you know that last year Market Day sales raised more than $4,400 to help with school and student activities expenses? This year Market Day has changed how school rebates are calculated. Total sales in excess of $3,500 receive a $ 15% rebate; sales in excess of $5,500 receive a 20% rebate. Last month, sales were $4,400. Our rebate was $615. With support from a few more families we can easily more than double the rebate we received last year! Stop by the Market Day display at the back of the church after all Masses this weekend, see what we have to offer, and pick up an order form. Our next sales date is Saturday, October 9, with orders due by 11 p.m. Tuesday, October 5. You may contact Paul if you have any questions.

7 OCTOBER 3, 2010 PAGE 7 ANNUAL BLANKET SUNDAY COLLECTION OLLECTION 10/10/10 Annually during the month of October, the Church celebrates life by dedicating the focus of prayer and social awareness activities to a respect for all life from conception to death. Nationally, the first Sunday of the month of October is designated as Respect Life Sunday. Throughout our Diocese, parishes join together to form Life Chains and parishioners stand for life at major intersections on the roadways throughout Greater Cleveland and its suburbs. Please join the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Respect Life Committee for an afternoon of prayer for the lives of the unborn this Sunday, October 3 rd. This ecumenical national prayer event is attended by over 1 million participants throughout North America. If you have been a part of this chain in the past, we know you will join us again. If you have never been a part of this event please consider standing with us as we witness to the evil of abortion, the beauty of adoption, and the wonder of Jesus healing power. We have a marvelous opportunity to influence those passing by on foot or in vehicles. We will meet in the Church parking lot at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish (1545 South Green Road) at 12:45 p.m. and proceed to the sidewalks adjacent to the intersection of Mayfield and Green road at 1:00 p.m., where we will stand in peaceful prayer for one hour. This event is for all ages, and will take place rain or shine. Let us draw courage from this prayer of Pope John Paul II written as a part of his encyclical Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), n.100 A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. Later in the month, on the weekend of October 23 and 24, our parish will celebrate the Annual Anointing of the Sick during each of the Masses. This sacrament is provided to those who are seriously or terminally ill or who are advanced in age. The sacrament may be received more than one time, whenever a person s health changes, thus it is no longer referred to as last rites. Members of the Spiritual Life Commission will be on hand to greet those to be anointed and show them to the seats that will be reserved for them in the front of the Church. The Blanket Sunday Drive is a collection to aid needy families, children, elderly and the homeless identified as most in need in each metropolitan area. As last year, The St. Vincent depaul Central Office is promoting a Cash Only collection since there no longer are any central collection or distribution points throughout the Diocese to receive blankets and other warm items. The money collected will be used to purchase not only blankets, cribs, and beds, but also other clothing items to provide warmth for needy families served through the St. Vincent depaul charitable network. Envelopes will be available in the pews and at the entrances of the Church next weekend. All money collected at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish will be used by the St. Vincent DePaul Central Office to assist the needy in our area. It may be warm and balmy now, but we now Northeastern Ohio will soon be experiencing very cold weather. Your contributions will help keep the bone-chilling cold from those in need. Please be as generous as you are able. HEALING OUR LOSSES The St. Anthony Adult Day Center is located in Euclid on the campus of Rose-Mary Center. St. Anthony Center provides a place where older adults can enjoy the company of others in a safe, secure environment, thus enabling their caregivers to return to work or receive a needed break.
