On Wednesday noon, from 12:00-1:00 PM, during four weeks of the Lenten Season, March 20-April 10, I invite you to join me in reading and reflecting on the best-selling book by Father Gregory Boyle, Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion. For decades, Father Boyle has ministered among the most notorious gang members in Los Angeles. God has worked through his ministry to transform the lives of fearsome and desperately needy young people by offering reconciliation through Christ and a hope-filled future with employment opportunities and the support of a truly loving and caring community. As one critic of Tattoos remarked, one minute you ll shed tears of sadness over the tragedies Father Boyle lives with, and the next you ll have tears of laughter at the humorous dialogue that runs throughout this award-winning book. My desire is that as we share this book, chapter by chapter, we ll be able to apply the principles of Greg Boyle s ministry to our personal sense of responsibility for those in our city and our communities whose lives are considered by some to be throw-away, and who, without meaningful opportunities, are headed toward incarceration and crime and without a positive future direction. Our discussion from this book may also lead us to an awareness of ways Dale Heights Church might be involved in ministry to those who are in need of what Father Boyle calls kinship, close identification and involvement with those in need, those for whom Christ died. I hope you ll sign the interest sheet in the concourse, so we ll have an idea how many books to order. The church education budget will subsidize the cost of the books so no one will need to pay more than $ You re encouraged to bring a sack lunch, and coffee and water will be provided. Crown of Thorns Lenten Wreath The season of Lent is a time of spiritual reflection for the Christian family.

During our Lenten journey, we make special sacrifices to remind us of Christ's suffering and sacrifice on the cross.

We will be incorporating candles and the Lenten wreath into the services again this Lenten season.

3 Crown of Thorns Lenten Wreath The season of Lent is a time of spiritual reflection for the Christian family. The roughness of the Lenten wreath symbolizes the suffering and scorn Jesus underwent for us. Each week a candle on the wreath is snuffed out as we move ever closer to the darkness of Good Friday. During our Lenten journey, we make special sacrifices to remind us of Christ's suffering and sacrifice on the cross. Through our Lenten prayer and practices, we prepare to accept God s gift of purifying and transforming our souls to receive the new life of the Risen Christ at Easter. We will be incorporating candles and the Lenten wreath into the services again this Lenten season. All six candles are lighted on March 10 th, and each successive Sunday another candle will be snuffed. A sign-up sheet for readers/candle snuffers will be in the Concourse. See Marcia with any questions. We are always welcoming new choir members. We meet Thursday evenings for rehearsals. Come lend your voice! We will be ordering Easter Flowers this year. If you would like to order flowers to decorate the sanctuary, please watch the sign-up table in the Concourse for information, or contact Marcia for more information. 5 HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP & MUSIC COMMITTEE MEETING Feb. 17, 2019 Welcomed Gerry Klump as a member of the committee. Discussed possibility of changing the order of services & reordering the readings so that they are closer to their associated prayers within the order of the service to help facilitate cohesion and connection of the message throughout the service. The idea of a Passover seder presentation & dinner during or before Holy Week was discussed. The committee tabled this idea for 2020 to allow for more adequate time to plan. Since there were no supply pastors available for February 24, Emily & June will lead a music service. Wendy offered to help coordinate the other elements of the service. The choir schedule & music for each Sunday is planned through the end of April. No choir on 3/10 & 4/14. New music pieces have been purchased that will be performed this spring by the choir. New members are always welcome to join the choir. Services for Lent begin with Ash Wednesday, March 6th. Palm Sunday is April 14 th. Good Friday is April 19, and Easter is April 21 st. People desiring to attend special services for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are encouraged to attend a church with a special service on those days. Watch for information in the March and April bulletins and Focus. The Lenten wreath will be used again this year. All 6 candles are lighted on March 10the and each successive Sunday another candle will be snuffed. A sign-up sheet for 6 readers/snuffers will be in the Concourse. Communion will be served on March 3, April 7, May 5 and June 2, 2019.The Easter service on April 21 will not include communion, since the liturgical calendar does not specify communion on that date. Palms and Easter flowers will be ordered from Klein s when information is received from them. A sign-up sheet with flower choices and prices will be placed in the concourse. Mary has begun making birthday and anniversary cards for congregation members. Cards will be placed in the box on the table that Bonnie had used. The next meeting date is June2, 2019; Gerry will open the meeting with prayer. Winter Weather Cancellation Although we prefer not to have to cancel worship or meetings at the church, we are experiencing a difficult winter. If the decision is made to cancel service, someone will send an and change the message on the answering machine by 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning in indicate the cancellation. If you are at all unsure about whether or not to come to church, please check your or call the church. Above all, play it safe.
