Box 308, Holdingford, MN History of the Stations of the Cross In the year 313 A.D., after 250 years of persecution, Emperor Constantine erected the Church of the Holy Sepulcher over the site of Jesus tomb. Pilgrims began to retrace Jesus final walk to Calvary, especially during Holy week, making stops along the way to commemorate specific events. The number of stops varied with some manuals listing up to 37. When it became dangerous to travel to Jerusalem again, Pilgrims tried to recreate Jesus journey in Europe. In 1342, Devotions to the way of the Cross were promoted by the Franciscan Friars but it wasn t until 1686 that Pope Innocent XI allowed the Franciscans to display the Stations in their churches. In 1731, all churches were allowed by Pope Clement XII to have stations of the Cross with the number fixed at 14. Trivia questions: Does only the Catholic Church do The Way of the Cross? No, Anglicans, Lutherans and Methodists also do them. Most churches have 14 Stations. Is there a practice of the 15th? Yes, the 15th is the Glorious Resurrection and it was added by Pope John Paul II in the year and USCCB.org

2 New Evangelization Corner Dear Friends, Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, every key player in salvation history has had to answer this question: will you trust God? (By the way, you and I are included in the list of key players). Because of the effects of original sin and our own experiences of human betrayal, we tend to be skittish and skeptical with our trust in God. Our hearts are often full of darker questions that we d rather not voice out loud: Is God really all Good? Does He really desire my happiness? Does He have a plan for my life? Does He really love me? Trust, however, grows with transparency. I ve often heard the word intimacy as best described as Into Me, See. When we love someone, we share the deeper parts of our hearts with them; we let them see inside of us. In today s Gospel, Jesus lays bare the heart of God: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. The Father shows us the deeper parts of His heart when Jesus is lifted up on the cross. When we gaze on Christ Crucified, we can tangibly see the Father s love. St. Paul affirms this in Romans 5:8: God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. In Christ Crucified, we no longer have to wonder if God is for us because we can concretely and definitively see just how far the Father will go to bring us back to himself. Brothers and sisters, in moments of darkness and confusion, let s fix our eyes on the crucifix and remember that God can be trusted! St. Clare of Assisi once said, 'Love Him totally, who gave Himself totally for your love.
