2 New Evangelization Corner Dear Friends, The month of December is upon us, and while I have always enjoyed the charm and excitement of Christmas preparations, I m finding that my appreciation for the liturgical season of Advent increases with each passing year. The season of Advent is a season of stillness, reflection, joyful expectation and hope. Advent is also the liturgical season that expresses our human condition. An what is the human condition? The human condition is this: we need a savior. We can t do life on our own. We have skeletons in our closets, relationships that need mending, and addictions that need breaking. We need somebody bigger than us to set us free from the bonds of sin and brokenness. We need to be restored to God. But let s be honest, because our human condition scares us, we create a myriad of distractions so we never have to face what s really in our heart. Do you think it s a mere coincidence that the Advent season of stillness and reflection has turned into a c commercialized season of frenzy and distraction? Beneath the hustle and bustle of life, don t we all secretly yearn for a love that accepts us unconditionally and seeks us out? Don t we all secretly acknowledge that we can t fix ourselves and we need a savior? Aren t we all a little afraid of how fragile and vulnerable we really are? But fear not, my friends. Jesus is coming for you! The season of Advent doesn t last forever: it leads us to Christmas! We are not abandoned in our plight, Jesus really does come! This Advent, let s be courageous enough to reflect upon those places where we need a savior. May the Advent season teach us to approach the darkness in our lives with joyful expectation and hope because Jesus will come to set us free. 3 Knights of Columbus St. Gregory Council Meeting will be on December 4th at 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary s, Upsala. Our Potluck Christmas party will be after 10 a.m. Mass at St. Edward s, Elmdale. All are invited. St. Nick may pay a visit. St. Isidore Council Meeting will be on December 6th at 8:00 p.m. at All Saints-St. Mary s basement. Are your feeling blue in the red and green season? During this season of joy many of us are missing our loved ones. Traditions are strong reminders that they are absent. If you are feeling this way please join us on Dec. 2nd after 8:00 a.m. Mass in the All Saints-St. Mary s basement Faith Formation room. On Dec.16th we will have a Blue Christmas service from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the All Saints St. Mary s basement. Refreshments will be provided. Please encourage others to come. These gatherings are facilitated by Marge Wentland, a chaplain at the St. Cloud Hospital and an All Saints parishioner. Prayers for our Lady of the Snows Pilgrimage. Please continue to pray for Father Gregory and all those returning from the pilgrimage that the Holy Spirit grow strong in their hearts as we begin this season of Advent. 4 Parish News & Events All Saints Christmas decorating Everyone who is interested in helping to decorate All Saints-St. Mary s for this blessed season in invited to attend a short meeting on Monday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the church basement in the first classroom. If unable to attend but would like to help please call Donna at Thank you! All Saints Building Committee update: Each week we will include some of our parishioner s responses regarding the future of our churches: We feel the need to have only one worship site is very important if there is ever going to be unity. The way it is now is driving away parishioners-too much tension. Using one of the sites already owned would make the most sense financially for a new church. Would it be possible to buy a house not attached? Would it be cheaper or even possible? We believe to keep both churches open is not a financially good choice. Double electric, lights, heating, insurance use this to operate one building. Yes-very scary to build a new church large sum of money needed, shortage of priests, structure of clusters. If we keep both open and do repairs needed-still have old buildings-use this money toward new building. Reuse of statues, altar, windows where possible would lower cost-must reuse. We feel to purchase land and have it somewhere else would just add to cost-use space already available that we own. St. Stanislaus Thank you to Polly Opatz, Diane Psyck, Marilyn Prokott, Jeanette Schlangen, Helaine Waletski, Lorie and Ray Maciej, Lois Lampert and Birdie Waldoch for cleaning the church (nave, sanctuary, sacristy, choir loft, gathering space and cupboards in the kitchen) on November 15th! All these areas are ready for the liturgies and activities of the Advent and Christmas seasons and beyond. St. Stanislaus: Darlene Saarela and Janey Schlangen Spiritual Retreat I was the lucky winner of the Spiritual Retreat at Pacem in Terris, The experience was so much more than what I expected; I was amazed how easy it was to slow down from our busy world we live in. During my time on the retreat I was able to have needed quiet time to reflect, to discern, to pray on my life, and ask questions like: what am I truly thankful for, where am I in my faith life, what do I need to work on, who should I be praying for, and what do I need to ask God s help with. Going on the retreat has helped me to grow spiritually. I recommend seeking this quiet time in your lives and hearing what God is saying to you.
