Box 308, Holdingford, MN The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation on December 8th. The Immaculate Conception is the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary free from original sin by virtue of the foreseen merits of her son Jesus Christ. In a particular way, Catholic Christians are invited to mark time by the great events of the Christian faith in a Liturgical calendar. However, like so much that is contained within the treasury of the Catholic Church; the practice must be understood in order to be fully received as a gift and actually begin inform the pattern of daily lives. Our actually choosing to live the Christian year, in a compelling way, can become a profoundly important form of missionary activity in an age which has become deluded by the barrenness of secularism. The Church, as a mother and a teacher, invites us to live the rhythm of the liturgical year in order to help us walk into a deeper encounter with the Lord and bring the whole world with us into the new world of the Church. That is because the Church is meant to become the home of the whole human race. That deeper encounter, that continual invitation - along with all the graces truly needed to live it - is what lies at the heart of Catholic Christian faith. The Christian Faith is not Some-Thing but Some- One. As we choose to actually live our lives liturgically, not just go through the motions, we can move through life in the flow of the liturgical calendar. We can experience the deeper mystery and meaning of life, now made New in Jesus Christ, the One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. (John 14:6,7) Join together now in beginning this season of Advent! Latin adventus is the translation of the Greek word parousia, commonly used to refer to the Second Coming of Christ. The season of Advent anticipates the coming of Christ from three different perspectives: in the flesh in Bethlehem, in our hearts daily, and in glory at the end of time. 2 New Evangelization Corner Dear Friends, Growing up, my sisters and I would spend Sunday nights in December watching Hallmark Christmas movies at my grandparents' house. We d be about halfway through the movie when, without fail, Grandma would poke her head into the living room and say, Oh I ve seen this movie before! This is the movie where And she d proceed to give the ending away. We'd always laugh, but we never minded. Hallmark movies are incredibly predictable, anyway. Everybody loves a good story. The best stories are those that lead you to the edge of your seat in anticipation of what will happen next. Advent is upon us, and while it is a season of anticipation, excitement, and mystery, I sometimes wonder if the Christmas story has become too predictable for us. We no longer wait on the edge of our seats to see how the story unfolds because we already know how it ends. The Israelites waited centuries for the Messiah to arrive! Unlike us, they didn t know how, when or where the Messiah would come. They simply had to trust that God had a plan and would keep His promises. The liturgical season of Advent teaches how to trust in the Lord. The story of Christmas reminds us that God has a plan and keeps His promises - even when it feels like we are waiting forever for an answer from Him. This Advent, let's renew our trust in God's timing and ways. Like the ancient Israelites, we don t know His plan for our lives. May the Christmas story remind us that God doesn t write predictable and boring stories. His plans are bigger and better than ours. No Adoration if there is a funeral on that day. Join in the Rosary 1/2 hour before all Masses! The Feast of St. Nicholas St. Nicholas was a Greek bishop of Myra, Italy born in the fourth century whose parents died during an epidemic leaving him to be raised by the Bishop of Patara, his uncle. Even as a young man, Nicholas was determined to use his substantial inheritance for works of charity. He is known to have thrown 3 bags of gold into an open window as dowry for each daughter of the household who could not find husbands due to their poverty. For lack of employment, the daughters would most likely have become prostitutes otherwise. On being discovered by the girls father as the benefactor, Nicholas answered that he should not thank him, but God alone. Many other works and miracles have been attributed to St. Nicholas including bringing back to life a sailor and on a separate occasion, three children who were wrongly killed, multiplying the wheat from a ship so that when some was given away the same amount remained. St. Nicolas relics are now in Bari, Italy. It is said that a liquid smelling like rose water seeps from his tomb that the faithful believe has miraculous powers. Contact: Margie or Arnie Benusa Here is an update from our brothers and sisters in Homa Bay: The re-election has occurred and the Kenya Supreme Court validated the election of the current president. The opposition candidate is a member of the Luo tribe (same as most of our partners) and centered out of Kisumu. Increased violence and unrest has developed as people disagree about the integrity of the re- election and the running of the government. Prayer is needed to calm the unrest and violence. Please pray for protection, safety, and peace for our partners and their country. Thank you for your support of our Partnership and our church family in Homa Bay in their time of need. May God inspire the Kenyans to resolve any injustices in peaceful ways. It has small doors to open each day that may have a small item, or open to reveal a part of the Nativity scene. Advent Wreath-observed both in church and family homes, the wreath has 4 candles occasionally with a 5th candle in the middle representing Jesus. Each week prayers are read and a candle is lit in preparation of the arrival of the Light of God coming into the world through the birth of Jesus Christ.
