There s a Wideness in God s Mercy... #645 MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES Many of us can relate to the story of the Apostles in today s Gospel. The Twelve were in need of rest, but wherever they went, their work and the needs of others followed them. God teaches us through example to rest; according to Genesis, God created the heavens and the earth in six days, and on the seventh day, he rested. God blessed this seventh day of the week and made it holy. Ask yourself honestly, has your Sabbath unintentionally become the busiest day of your week? We can learn a lot about the importance of honoring the Sabbath from our Jewish brothers and sisters, who in some traditions completely refrain from work activities. Also in today s readings (1st, psalm, and Gospel), we listen to metaphors involving sheep and their shepherds. In the first reading, religious leaders who are scattering the flock (i.e. people) and not caring for them are admonished. The psalm response reminds us that only God is our true shepherd, and in the second reading, Paul tells us that Christ is our peace and brings all of us together, especially those of us who are far off the path to God. At the end of the Gospel reading, we understand that the job of a shepherd never ends, and that Christ will not ignore the needs of those who seek him as the Good Shepherd of us all. Christ, as our shepherd will bring his sheep (us), both far off and near, to God our Creator. Today s music reflects these scriptural themes well. In the procession hymn, Jesus invites us to rest. We discover that through Christ, we are nourished and revived in body, mind, and spirit, and that if we look to him, even through our darkest days, we will reach God s eternal kingdom of peace and happiness. The hymn at the offertory directly reflects today s Gospel reading. It recalls the people that flocked to Christ like sheep without a guide and relates that image to us in modern day times. The hymn ends with an invocation for Christ to bless the Church and to lead its ministers to preach with grace and faithfulness, unlike the leaders that we heard about in the first reading. 2 JULY 19, 2015 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Communion hymn, Gift of Finest Wheat, has become widely recognized as one of the finest recent Eucharistic hymns, primarily because of its use of biblical images. The stanzas introduce each of these images in turn, and the refrain repeatedly brings us back to the hymn's controlling thought: God's "gift of finest wheat" is Christ, "the bread of life" (Ps. 81:16; John 6:35). Authored by Omer Westendorf for a Eucharistic hymn competition, the tune BICENTENNIAL was paired with the text and first sung at the 41st Eucharistic Congress, a Roman Catholic convention on the Eucharist held in Philadelphia in 1976 (the year of the USA's bicentennial). The concluding hymn, There s a Wideness in God s Mercy, was written by Frederick William Faber, an English Roman Catholic priest who founded the Priests of the Congregation of St. Philip Neri (otherwise known as the Oratorians). After dwelling on the influence, respectively, of St. Theresa, of St. Ignatius, and of St. Philip Neri, on Catholicism; and of the last that "sanctity in the world, perfection at home, and high attainments in common earthly callings, was the principal end of his apostolate," Fr. Faber states that he authored hymns because, It was natural then that an English son of St. Philip should feel the want of a collection of English Catholic hymns fitted for singing. In the second stanza, we are invited to rest upon God s word, and don t go anywhere, because in the third stanza, we close today s liturgy with one last image of sheep that are scattered and in need of Christ to bring each of us together and present us to our Living God. I hope that you enjoy reading these weekly summer columns on why and how the music for the Mass reflects the scripture readings. It is my prayer that this information will encourage you to use the hymnal and participate in the Mass. If you are new to hymn singing or still on the fence about it, I promise that the hymnals don t bite! Even if you simply read the text while others sing, you will internalize more of the meaning of the Mass, I guarantee it. I was recently reminded by a colleague that when we sing together, we breathe together. And, when we breathe together, we create a community towards the vision of what God wants of us. Music gives us a glimpse of the Kingdom which cannot yet be seen. I wholeheartedly invite you to join in our sacred sound. IN OUR PARISH Can t find the bulletin you brought home from church? RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT We are looking for a part-time administrative assistant in the Religious Education Office at St. Jane. A candidate would have an interest in and love for the ministry of Religious Education and Spiritual Formation; help with registrations, secretarial duties, and support for the various programs. He/she would need to have worked with a database, know Microsoft Office Suite, and be a welcoming presence to all the families of the parish. Part-time hours would include Tuesday afternoons and evenings and an occasional weekend. VISITING CHILDREN S CHOIR FROM FRANCE On the weekend of August 22/23, our parish will host les Petits Chanteurs de France, an acclaimed boychoir from Paris, France. The ensemble, composed of twenty-two boys ranging from 7-17 years old, will offer a concert on Saturday, August 22 at 7:30 pm in church (free admission/ free-will offering to support the choir will be accepted). On Sunday, August 23, the choir will provide music at the 10:00 am Mass. All are welcome to attend these events. POTOMAC ORGAN INSTITUTE The Potomac Organ Institute was founded in 1988 to interest young people in the field of church music by providing instruction on the pipe organ. Auditions for prospective students (grades 7 and up, and adults) are held each summer and scholarship recipients receive one year

3 of free organ instruction from a local professional organist from September through May. Auditions will be held on Wednesday evening, August 26, and again on Tuesday evening, September 1 at All Saints Church, Chevy Chase, MD. CCD REGISTRATION FOR Registration for next year s CCD classes is taking place. Children ages 3 high school are welcome to attend the classes. Children ages 3 and 4 meet for FOOT (Faith Of Our Toddlers) on Sunday mornings during the 10:00 am Mass. Grades K 5 meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 5:45 pm, grades 6 8 meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 8:15 pm, and high school students meet on Sundays from 6:00p 7:30 pm. FIAT DISCERNMENT CAMP FOR HIGH SCHOOL WOMEN A Fiat Discernment Camp for high school-aged women will be held at Mount St. Mary s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD on July This three-day camp includes prayer, talks, discussions with religious sisters, games and sports, and is a joint venture with the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Additional information and online registration are available under the Consecrated Life tab at RETREAT FOR SEPARATED AND DIVORCED CATHOLICS A retreat for separated and divorced Catholics will be held at the Loyola Retreat House in Faulkner, Maryland from July Monsignor Maury O Connell, the SDC Chaplain, will be the director for the retreat with the theme of Peace with God, Family, and Friends. Attendees will meet in large sessions and small groups to explore the effect of divorce on their relationship with the Church, family, and friends. To help in this process, Maryland s bishops have prepared an advance directive, the Catholic Declaration for Health Care Decision Making, through which you can appoint a health care agent and express your wishes for spiritual support, medical care and treatment, pain-relieving medication, and medically-assisted nutrition and hydration.
