Please complete a registration form and drop it in the collection basket when you attend Mass. VISIT FROM ST. NICHOLAS This Sunday, December 16, after the 10:00 am Mass, children ages 2 10 are invited to gather in Caulfield Hall for a story about, and a visit from, St. Nicholas, the saint, during the coffee and donuts social. ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE The annual communal reconciliation service during Advent will take place this Tuesday, December 18, at 7:00 pm. After a brief Liturgy of the Word, priests will be available to hear individual confessions. CARPOOLING WITH CHRIST "Carpooling with Christ," a holy hour with Eucharistic Adoration, will take place each Wednesday of Advent from 2:00 2:45 pm in church. All parishioners are welcome to come in for a few minutes of prayer, or to stay the entire time! THE GOSPEL STORY ON CHRISTMAS EVE Children ages 4 10 are invited to join in the Christmas Eve 4:00 pm Mass enactment of the Gospel story. If your child is interested in participating, there will be a practice on Saturday, December 22 at 9:00 am in the church. We will need lots of angels and shepherds, some sheep, cows and a donkey, as well as Mary and Joseph. Parts will be chosen on the day of practice. SNOW POLICY FOR WEEKDAY MASSES If the Federal Government is closed due to inclement THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT weather, St. Jane de Chantal will not hold either the 8:00 am nor the weekday Masses. Please stay safe at home, and allow our snow removal crews to clear and treat our parking lots and walkways. If the Federal Government is opening on a delayed schedule, we will hold both the 8:00 am and Masses. PRO-LIFE CHRISTMAS CARDS The Pro-Life Committee thanks everyone who helped make the Christmas card sale a success. Christmas cards are still available; call Lisa Tennant at Proceeds benefit Right to Life of Montgomery County. SACRED HEART PARISH FOOD PANTRY During the winter months the less fortunate in our area often have to choose between spending on groceries and paying their utility bills. The food pantry at Shrine of the Sacred Heart in DC serves these people. They depend on your continued generosity. Please remember to bring nonperishables to Mass and leave them in the basket in the gathering space of church. Thank you. PILGRIMAGE WITH FR. BURNEY Fr. 3 ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH IN OUR BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Check out the St. Jane de Chantal School website at to get information on admissions, see what each classroom is studying, and more. Greg Gannon Food Drive St. Jane de Chantal School and Faith Formation once again took part in the Greg Gannon Food Drive during the Thanksgiving season. Each class was assigned a food item to donate such as cereal, pasta, or dried milk. Eighth grade students went door-to-door leaving brown grocery bags, then returned to those homes to collect the bags of canned food items. Together, these efforts help to replenish homeless shelters and food pantries for the needy in our community. Families were very generous in their donations, filling an enormous truck full of non-perishable food items. This is one tangible way the students can give back during the holiday season. CATHOLIC MATH LEAGUE The school finished its first competition in the Catholic Math League for the school year, and overall, the school did very well. This competition is open to any Catholic school in the country in grades three - eight. Our school did exceedingly well when ranked against other schools in the country and state. Third and seventh grades finished 14th and 12th, respectively, in the state of Maryland. Congratulations to Ali Gandolfo, Kateri Ozog, Brigid Broome, Jack Hill, Johnny Broome, Jessica Khoury, Sara Ryan, Meredith Gotzman, and Tyler Burgess for placing first in their class. LINCOLN'S COTTAGE VISIT The second grade classes went for their annual visit to Lincoln's cottage where they learned about Abraham Lincoln's life, accomplishments, and the ways he changed history in America. Students learned what life would have been like for young Abe with chores, school work, and play. The second grade made Lincoln hats and heard stories that told of young Abe's life. MEDIEVAL TIMES The sixth grade went to Medieval Times for their first field trip of the year. The field trip was to experience what it was like to be a citizen of a kingdom of old because their March musical, Getting to Know Once Upon a Mattress, is also set during the Medieval period of history. It came complete with jousting tournaments, a theatrical educational program, and eating with no utensils (as was the custom of the period). SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER The sixth and seventh grade students made over 65 Christmas cards for soldiers who are away from their families at Christmas. They were donated to Mission Barbeque in Rockville, who distributed the cards to members of our Armed Forces at Walter Reed Medical Center. SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE Plan to attend the annual Catholic Schools Week Open House on Monday, January 28, 2019 from 9:00-. Visiting St. Jane de Chantal School during an Open House is the best way to discover what makes our vibrant school community a "Best of Bethesda" school for the third year in a row. All classrooms, Pre-K to Grade 8, will be open to visitors, who will have the opportunity to meet teachers, and learn about our academic curriculum and extra-curricular programs in Fine Arts, Science and Athletics.
