2 JANUARY 4, 2015 MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES Last year, Deacon Kenneth Angell asked me to write a column on a special text commonly known as the Epiphany Proclamation. I wasn t able to submit the article on time last year, so I saved the topic for In the last few pages of the Roman Missal (the large red book that the priest uses to celebrate Mass) and in an appendix that few persons realize exists, one will find a text titled The Announcement of Easter and the Movable Feasts. In the age before the Internet, mobile devices, television, radio, and even the printing press, Catholics needed a way of knowing when Easter would be celebrated, as well as many other movable feasts (i.e. Ash Wednesday, Pentecost, etc.; essentially, any feast that isn t celebrated on a definitive date, such as Christmas). I ve only once seen this proclamation done; at the Shrine, a cantor chanted the text during the Solemn Epiphany Mass. I chuckle when I reflect on it because no one in the pews knew what was happening it was one of those uncomfortable liturgical moments when congregants did not know whether to sit or stand. It seems that the practice of reciting this text is done out of tradition at only a small number of churches. (Coincidentally, in 2011, I attended the papal Epiphany Mass at St. Peter s, Vatican City, and the proclamation was not done, even with Benedict XVI on the altar... thus, this is a pretty rare liturgical occurrence.) At any rate, the text is beautiful, and the meaning of the proclamation transcends its practical means of giving dates to the faithful and bestows the centrality of the celebration of Easter Sunday in the liturgical year. So, do you have your calendars ready? Know, dear brethren, that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God's mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the eighteenth day of February will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the fifth day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the seventeenth day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the twenty-fourth day of May, the feast of Pentecost. On the seventh day of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the twenty-ninth day of November, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. If you have a question on music or liturgy, please feel free to ask me. If I don t know the answer, I enjoy researching and sharing my findings with the parish. May this divine power, by its meekness, take away the hardness of heart of so many men and women immersed in worldl i ness and indifference, the gl obal i zat i on of indifference. May his redeeming strength transform arms into p l o u g h s h a r e s, destruction i nto creativity, hatred into love and tenderness.
