Bach ( ) MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES The Great Fifty Days of Easter are nearly drawing to a close, but not without a splash of major solemnities and feasts that we are fortunate to celebrate as a Church and as a Parish over the next four weeks. This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Jesus was actually raised forty days after Easter ( He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God Acts 1:3), which is why this feast is commonly known as Ascension Thursday, but in some dioceses, including our own, we keep Jesus around a few more days and celebrate His ascension on the Sunday following forty days so that more people can join in the celebration. All of the music selected for today s liturgy reflects on the Ascension of Jesus. The Procession Hymn, written by Saint Bede (Venerable) in the 8th century, evokes Old Testament praise of God and juxtaposes it with New Testament theology ( O risen Christ, ascended now, to your blessed name all knees shall bow ). The hymn at the Offertory, which is sung to the Welsh tune LLANFAIR, was written by Charles Wesley, the leader of the Methodist movement, and elaborates on the royalty and sovereignty of the ascended Christ, to which Mark alluded in his gospel: So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God (Mark 16:19). The early Methodist church was an offspring of the Anglican church, which sprouted from the Roman Church; therefore, we can manifest ecumenism and Christian Unity through this shared song. The communion antiphon is taken from the Roman Missal and set to music by yours truly. The church documents actually request that the prescribed antiphons be sung in place of hymns, but not many of these texts are set to music in the vernacular. Singing this text to a simple refrain can help us to internalize its true meaning Jesus is with us always, even until the end of days. Lastly, the Concluding Hymn is a more modern text, set to the beloved hymn tune SINE NOMINE, composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Sylvia Dunstan was a Canadian minister, who passed away all too soon in She has left behind numerous hymn texts, one of her most popular being Go to the World. The text evokes today s Gospel reading and charges us as Christians to become disciples of Christ. What better way to end today s Mass than with this text?! If you close the hymnal early and leave, then I ll assume that you re overly eager to begin your evangelization. IN OUR PARISH WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS St. Jane de Chantal Parish welcomes those who have recently registered in our parish David LaJuett If you attend Mass at St. Jane Frances de Chantal regularly, we encourage you to register as a member. Please complete a registration form and drop it in the collection basket the next time you attend Mass. The Youth Group will be taking donations at the Sunday coffee to benefit a local charity. REMEMBER IN PRAYER... those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Pat Krisko, Betty Hannan, Jackson Gilmore, Anita Baker, Susan Tise, and Joseph Montefiore. IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES SACRED MUSIC IN A SACRED SPACE Join us for the final program in our Parish's Sacred Music in a Sacred Space concert series on Sunday, May 31 at 3:30 pm. Additionally, our director and assistant director of music, Russell and Andrew, will perform an inspirational piano/organ duet on the hymn tune, Amazing Grace. The one hour event is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be accepted to support the parish's Music Ministry. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED Our parish is in need of additional Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers). We will especially need help at the Sunday 5:00 pm Mass during the summer. If you are looking for a way to serve others and volunteer your time to the parish, being a part of any of our Liturgical Ministries, and in particular, Eucharistic Ministry, is a excellent way to respond. Interviews and a training session will be held in early June. To sign up, call the parish office. ST. JANE DE CHANTAL S Jazz & Juleps EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY TO MAPLEWOOD Current Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are needed to administer Communion to residents of Maplewood who are not able to get to church on Sunday.
