Reading I: Dt 6:2-6 In the movie The Man Who Captured Eichmann, the Mossad operative Peter hears Adolf Eichmann, who oversaw the transport of Jews to the Nazi death camps, say that he does not hate Jews. In fact, Eichmann says, he once studied Hebrew with a rabbi in Berlin. He then goes on to quote the most sacred statement of Jewish belief, the Sh ma (Deut. 6:4). Later, Eichmann screams at Peter: Unser Gott. Aldof Hitler ist unser Gott! ( Our God is Adolf Hitler! ). By our way of life, who is our God? Reading II: Heb 7:23-28 Jesus has become high priest by his deeds and his faith, not by his descent from Aaron. Unlike the high priests who served the Temple, he will not be replaced in this role, because he is confirmed as high priest by the resurrection. Gospel: Mk 10:46-52 Every rabbi was expected to provide his own interpretation of the Torah (within the limits of what was considered orthodox teaching). Part of that interpretation involved naming the chief commandments. This is what Jesus does here. In fact, this particular teaching was probably not very different from other rabbis at the time. A FOND FAREWELL St. Teresa of Avila has said: Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things pass away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices. It is with a heavy heart that I share with you my decision to leave St. Jane s in order to take on a new opportunity at Georgetown University. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your support of the music and liturgical ministries at St. Jane s over the past five and a half years. I am grateful to Fr. Giese and to all of our wonderful music and liturgy volunteers for our time working together. Together we strived to manifest the parish s mission that seeks to enable our fellow parishioners to live the life of Jesus Christ and to share their God-given talents for the benefit of each other and of society. I will continue to be with you for several more weeks, but please keep in your prayers an intention THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME for the calling of a new member of our parish staff to carry on the music and liturgical duties of this wonderful parish. YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP: CREDIBLE CATHOLI SERIES Come join us for our Fall spiritual series! We will be studying and discussing the Credible Catholic series. Through engaging presentations, the series looks to debunk several secular "myths" which drive many away from the Catholic Church. The third session, "Proof of God's Existence from Philosophy," will be held in Caulfield Hall at 7:30 pm on Monday, November 12. SACRED MUSIC IN A SACRED SPACE Join us on Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 pm for a concert of music for Trombone and Organ featuring Jeremy Buckler, a trombonist with the National Symphony Orchestra. The one-hour concert is free and open to the public. All are welcome. ADVENT WREATH WORKSHOP Begin Advent by bringing your family and friends together to learn about the Advent wreath and to make a fresh wreath of your own to take home! Our parish always has need for new volunteers to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Eucharistic Ministers), particularly at the Sunday 12:00 noon and 5:00 pm Masses. An archdiocesan training session for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will take place on Saturday, November 10 from 9:00 am 12:00 pm at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Silver Spring. ACADEMIC QUIZ BOWL TEAM Mrs. Miller, Mr. MacInnes, and Mrs. Kish have been quizzing seventh and eighth grade students to form an academic quiz bowl team. Our five-member team will train together to prepare for a competition at DeMatha High School in January. De Chantal's academic quiz bowl team for this school year is: Kirk Wall, Nina Swartz, Paolo Rivero, Brett Wall, and Morgan Skibo. MIDDLE SCHOOL STEM SPEAKERS Each month a STEM speaker is invited to speak to our seventh grade classes about their STEM industry and their life path to a STEM career. This months' speaker was Dr. Takhounts from the National Transportation Safety Board. Dr. Takhounts shared crash test studies from the NTSB and the National Football League as a way to educate students about the link between biomedical engineering and neurological medicine. Students then simulated the impact of force on the human brain using eggs. VIRTUAL REALITY The fourth grade had a ton of fun using the new virtual reality goggles to investigate human organs. They were able to look deep inside a human heart, lungs, blood vessels, and the entire respiratory system. The virtual reality goggles were donated by the HSA as part of the technology upgrade the school received last year. Funds were raised through the Gala and various HSA events over the past year.
