3 ST. JANE FRANCES DE CHANTAL CHURCH CATHOLIC SCHOOL'S WEEK This week we celebrated Catholic School's week. Students read their "Why I love de Chantal" papers at Mass last Sunday. Open House made the school a busy and spirited place on Monday. On Wednesday, we attended Mass as a school to celebrate the week and our Catholic values we work hard to live by. We spent the rest of the week appreciating students, teachers, parents, community members, volunteers, priests, and the school administration. It was a festive week to celebrate being Catholic at a fantastic Catholic school! Thank you to all who made our 2019 Catholic School's Week such a success. ANNUAL GEOGRAPHY BEE Once again, de Chantal took part in the National Geography Bee. There were 33 finalists from de Chantal who competed in the final competition of the National Geographic Bee. After four rounds of questions, three students qualified for the championship round. After a very competitive round of questions, Joshua Rivera, a fifth grade student and the winner of last year's Geography Bee, correctly answered the final question and was named school winner. The second place runner up was eighth grade student, Felicity Yetter. Our school winner, Joshua, will compete in the National Geographic Bee Maryland State Competition. Congratulations to all that participated in the event! SKI CLUB Each year the seventh and eighth grade students in ski club go skiing four times at the area ski resorts. Recently, the club made the first of the four trips to Ski Liberty, where students took a ski or snowboard lesson, and then had time to ski on their own, grab dinner, and spend time with friends on the mountains. Teachers and parent chaperones also got to have a little fun on the mountain skiing with the students. FLAG FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT Recess is always an exciting time at de Chantal, but the week before the Superbowl is one of the most exciting times to be a sixth, seventh, or eighth grade student. The middle school organizes a lunch recess Flag Football competition. Students are able to make their own co-ed teams and play for the de Chantal Super Flag Football Champion title. Winners will be announced next week. Good luck to all of the teams competing! HOOPS FOR HEART February is National Heart Month. As one of our annual giving projects, the students of St. Jane de Chantal will be participating in Hoops for Heart the week of February 11. Help us reach our goal of $20,000 by contributing to this wonderful cause. Go to search our school by city and state, and join our TEAM. You can also send contributions to St. Jane de Chantal School, c/o Lisa Tehan, 9525 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD All checks should be made payable to The American Heart Association. The theme of the 2019 Appeal is Our Faith. Our Hope. Our Mission and is much different from a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable over ten months that will help support the ministries and mission of all our faith communities of the Church of Washington. A gift to the Annual Appeal will touch the lives of thousands of people in a very positive way. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our archdiocese and give Him thanks for all He has given us. This year, you can support the Annual Appeal many different ways. Many of you may have received a mailing in January that you can respond to. You can also support the Appeal online at adw.org or text Give to We will also be providing the opportunity to support the Appeal at Mass the weekend of February 23/24. As in every year, 100% of your contribution to the Annual Appeal will be designated to the ministries and programs supported by the Appeal. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. CH POPE FRANCIS The today, proclaimed by Christ that day, applies to every age; it echoes for us too, reminding us of the relevance and necessity of the salvation Jesus brought to humanity. God comes to meet the men and women of all times and places, in their real life situations. He also comes to meet us. It is always he who takes the first step: he comes to visit us with his mercy, to lift us up from the dust of our sins; and he invites us to receive the comforting truth of the Gospel and to walk on the paths of good. He always comes to find us, to look for us.
