Troeger preached on the story of the Annunciation, and what made his words resonate so well with me, even ten years later, is that he was able to teach me how to grow in my faith through the inner workings of scripture. If you are not familiar with the events of the Annunciation, I invite you to revisit it in Luke 1: I am confident that everyone reading this can picture the scene of Mary with the Angel Gabriel from countless works of art, and even more so by the large amounts of exegesis published by various scholars of all faiths. In his sermon, Troeger only preached on one line: but [Mary] was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting

2 JULY 2, 2017 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME this might be (Luke 1:29). This line is quickly lost on most of us, but two words immediately jumped out at him: troubled and pondered. Of particular interest is the word pondered because it comes from a translation of the original Greek word sumballousa, whose definition is far more complex than the English word ponder. Sumballousa implies a deep and emotionally challenging comparison; something that one would honestly struggle with in their heart. To add the word troubled into the mix only makes Mary s decision all the more difficult. This one little line, lost on so many of us, tells us that Mary was an extremely strong woman in heart, mind, and soul. Troegers sermon was not a typical one that paints Mary as a simple and pure being, but rather, one that presents Mary as the strong and powerful woman that she was, the theotokos (God-bearer). He had an amazing punch line that remains as vivid in my mind as the day he said it. I will refrain from retyping it, but if it interests you, stop by the organ after Mass and I will tell you. God chose Mary as someone capable of the responsibility of bearing his son, our Lord and Savior. I am not sure that any of us have ever felt a responsibility so great. Sure, Mary was indeed pure and humble, but let s not leave out strong and courageous, too. I mention this reflection as a means to encourage you to seek a deeper meaning of the scriptures, particularly during these weeks of Ordinary Time when we are able to learn so much about the life and ministry of Jesus. Today s Gospel might be a little tough to digest, but if you sumballousa the first part of the reading with the second half, I think that you ll be able to see that the point Jesus is trying to make is that only by him are we saved by the grace of God. I will close with the lyrics of the great hymn, Praise to the Lord: Ponder anew what the Almighty can do. What an amazing message. So glad that you are here with us to experience it! IN OUR PARISH Can t find the bulletin you brought home from church? Want to keep up on what s happening in the parish even when you are away on vacation or sick in bed? WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS St. Jane de Chantal Parish welcomes those who have recently registered in our parish. If you attend Mass at St. Jane Frances de Chantal regularly, we encourage you to register as a member. Please complete a registration form and drop it in the collection basket when you attend Mass. ST. MARTIN S CLOAK BACKPACK AND ROLLER BAG DRIVE The Saint Martin s Cloak Guild in our parish works to support the efforts of, among others, Shepherd s Table of Silver Spring and the Father McKenna Center in Washington, DC, in bringing needed food, supplies, and services to the area homeless. At this time there is a special need for new or gently used school book backpacks, including roller backpacks, that can help the homeless to protect their personal belongings as they go about their daily lives without permanent shelter. With the school year coming to a close, now is an opportune time to donate your children s used backpacks and roller bags to assist those in great need. You may drop off your backpacks this weekend, July 1/2. Collections will be in the gathering space of church. For questions on assisting in this important community endeavor to support those less fortunate, but nevertheless independent, call Paul Eder at FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY This Tuesday, July 4, is Independence Day, a federal holiday. The only Mass at St. Jane will be celebrated at 8:00 am. The parish office will be closed. ADDRESSING IMMIGRATION IN MARYLAND The Catholic bishops in Maryland issued a joint statement three weeks ago calling for all people of faith and good will to come together in a spirit of compassion, prudence, and cooperation in addressing the issue of immigration. The bishops also urge state and local elected officials to consider several guiding principles when determining the appropriate relationship between federal immigration officials and local law enforcement. In the United States, the Catholic Church was founded by immigrant communities who have always found a home in their local parish. Today, the Church in Maryland continues to welcome and embrace newcomers to our country, and to advocate on their behalf. The statement from the Most. Rev. William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, the Most. Rev. W. Francis Malooly, Bishop of Wilmington, and auxiliary bishops Mark Brennan, Roy Campbell, Mario Dorsonville, Barry Knestout, and Adam Parker can be found at THEOLOGY ON TAP: DC All young adults (21-late 30s) are invited to the summer Theology on Tap series Vacation Bible School at Buffalo Billiards in Dupont Circle on Tuesday evenings from July 11 August 1. BURYING CREMATED REMAINS AT CATHOLIC CEMETERIES Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Washington seeks to assist families who are still holding the cremated remains of loved ones and are ready to inter them in sacred ground. The cemeteries of the archdiocese have prepared for the interment of cremated remains in ground burial sections, columbariums, or mausoleum niches, with respectful options for memorialization. Working with the

4 JULY 2, 2017 pastor, charity burials also are available to families who desire interment, but cannot financially afford the full cost of burying their loved one. For more information contact the manager at Gate of Heaven Cemetery (13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD, ); or All Souls Cemetery (11401 Brink Rd., Germantown, MD, STEWARDSHIP Both the first reading and the Gospel today speak of hospitality and welcome. Our ministers of hospitality are a most visible example of using one s time and talents to welcome the people of God. But the Gospel assures us that all who give even just a cup of cold water to one of His lowliest ones will be rewarded. See Matthew 10:42 PARISH SUPPORT FOR JUNE 25, 2017 Offertory June 26, 2016 Peter s Pence June 2016 Attendance June 26, 2016 $ 9, $11, $4, $4, THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SECOND COLLECTION: MAINTENANCE The second collection this weekend, July 1/2, is our monthly collection to help with the repair and maintenance of our parish facilities. SECOND COLLECTION: CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES Due to changes in the archdiocesan second collection schedule, the annual in-pew collection to benefit Catholic Relief Services will take place next weekend, July 8/9. CRS is the official international Catholic relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Six worldwide Catholic relief agencies are funded by this collection, which helps organizations provide pastoral support, humanitarian aid, and other vital assistance to poor and vulnerable persons around the world. If you have not already donated to CRS collection, either through Faith Direct or by an undated envelope provided in your offertory envelope packet, please consider a contribution as you are able. POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, July 8/9, will benefit SOME (So Others Might Eat). SOME provides daily meals and other immediate needs for the homeless and those who are extremely poor. SOME also provides programs that address the root causes of homelessness and poverty, including a six-month job training; daily socialization for men and women suffering from mental-illness; addictions counseling; and affordable, service-enriched housing. For more information, visit On April 21, intense thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hail tore through the D.C. area, causing property damage to the St. Jane de Chantal campus. Damage included trees, a soccer goal, and a picnic table. In addition to the storm on April 21, we also had snow this past winter. While the accumulation of snow was not as significant as past years, we still incurred expenses for snow removal and the treatment of ice-covered sidewalks and pavement. Mark your calendar: the weekend of July 15/16 to cover the cost of snow removal & storm damage this fiscal year. Put your contribution envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and make the switch to e-giving. e By embracing this prac ce, you will simplify your giving and help provide our parish with consistent support. This is especially important in the summer months, when families may be out of town and St. Jane de Chantal does not receive their envelopes. It is easy for people to forget to catch up once they are back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries. Making the switch is easy: You can enroll online at or pick up a paper enrollment form in the gathering space of church. Our parish code is MD30.
