LITURGY & MUSIC NOTES Catholic culture captivates me, simply because it is so broad and varied. It is interesting to notice differences in the worship practices between persons of the Baby Boomer generation and those of the Millennial generation. What I usually observe from the organ console is that the Baby Boomer s are more likely to arrive late, leave after communion, stand mute, and stare out the window, while the Millennial s who come to church, whether on their own or with their young families, are more active in their worship and commit to staying in church from the first Sign of the Cross to the last. To add to the complexity of the issue, when I see teens and young adults in church with their parents, if the parents do not actively participate in worship, then their children are likely to follow their example; however, if the same teens and young adults are in church without their inattentive parents, they are likely to pick up a hymnal and even dare to recite the creed. There have been numerous studies performed to back up my observations. Most argue that Vatican II took away a sense of solemnity and sacredness in the Baby Boomer s generation and that the Millennial generation thirsts for things that cannot be explained, such as the mysticism found in our faith. Could be true, but then why isn t every ten to thirty year old filling our pews? As a parish we can strive to cross the bounds of generational divide and worship as one body of believers, excited in the faith. One more observation another cultural activity that baffles me is quite peculiar. When Mass is over, some eagerly wait in their pew for the priest to pass by (some sing, others do not and stand agitated and antsy). Once the priest passes by, it is as if he has unlocked an invisible gate at the end of the pews, and many rush out, putting away the hymnal in attempt to leave the building as quickly as possible. We aren t practicing for a fire drill here on earth, but in heaven. Food for thought. Enjoy being in church and church well. Russ. REMEMBER IN PRAYER... those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Helen Fincutter, Hilda Kiss, and Isabelle Fitzpatrick. IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. MARCH FOR LIFE A SUCCESS! Responding to the need to show our joy for the Gospel, the St. Jane s youth marched bravely through the cold during the annual Right to Life March in Washington DC. After attending the youth Mass for Life at the Verizon Center, our parish pro-life spirit was represented on the National Mall along with thousands of Christians defending the dignity of all human life. Each little step was a reminder of the struggle of the pro-life effort and a summons to embrace the whole Gospel of life. Jesus told his disciples, Let the children come to me. We learned that every human has a soul, is alive, and is loved by God. God bless all his sons and daughters! YOUTH SUPER BOWL PARTY Teens of the parish are invited to cheer on their favorite championship team at the SMASH Super Bowl party, in the Seton Center this Sunday, February 2, after the 5:00 pm Mass. We are cooking up a big dinner with Super Bowl snacks and games. We welcome your friends and visitors to enjoy the game, fellowship, and the funny commercials! FEBRUARY YOUTH NIGHTS ESSENTIALS OF FAITH Join the Tuesday night parish teens as we dive deeper into our Catholic tradition. Exploring the essentials of our faith has never been more intriguing! Follow Fr. Cusick and Br. Peter in topics you won t want to miss. There s time to think, ask questions, and have a great time. On February 4 we explore the power of the sacraments and sacramentals. On February 11 we think about how to grow in trusting God. On February 18 join us as we hang out at the teen social event. On February 25 we hear from a guest speaker who will give testimony and witness to their Catholic faith. A great journey of faith awaits you! IN OUR BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL Check out the St. Jane de Chantal School website at to get information on admissions, see what each classroom is studying, and more. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK Every year St. Jane de Chantal school observes Catholic Schools Week, which is a national celebration of Catholic education. The week began, as is so appropriate, at weekend Masses where school children read remarks they had prepared about why they love St. Jane de Chantal school. Attending a Catholic school, I have an advantage
4 FEBRUARY 2, 2014 to practice my faith. We have a strong parish and attend Mass as classes and as a school. In the academic program the teachers not only teach the required material but they go beyond and teach each day with enthusiasm. Mrs. Hamilton, our principal, wants each student to succeed in school and in life. I love St. Jane de Chantal and I am so glad that my parents chose this school for me. The week continued with activities honoring parents, students, volunteers, and teachers. Rick Kramer, Director of the Office for Family Life at rkramer@adw.org or CARDINAL S APPEAL Many of our parishioners received a mailing from Cardinal Wuerl recently. He has asked that you make a pledge to the 2014 Cardinal s Appeal. The Cardinal s Appeal not only funds the operations of the archdiocese, it funds services that are of great help to our parish, for example, tuition assistance in our school, as well as training for our liturgical ministers. This year, the theme of the appeal is Seek First the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). As we seek first the kingdom of God, we have the capability of helping it to be present in our lives and in the lives of those around us. How does this happen? Through our works of charity, our works of love, and our works of compassion. Contributions to the Cardinal s Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to respond to the needs of others by enabling ministries and services that touch thousands of lives. Please prayerfully consider a generous pledge to the 2014 Cardinal s Appeal. STEWARDSHIP When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, they offered a sacrificial gift in accord with the dictate in the law of the Lord. An offering of a specific size or kind is not dictated when we bring our gifts to the altar at Mass. Is my gift reflective of the many blessings I have received? PARISH SUPPORT FOR JANUARY 26, 2014 Offertory This week in 2013 Attendance This week in 2013 $12, $13, SECOND COLLECTION The second collection this weekend, February 1/2, is our monthly collection to help with the repair and maintenance of our parish facilities. One recent project was the replacement of the phone system in the rectory/parish office. The voice mail for the system stopped working, and because no spare parts could be located, the entire system had to be replaced at a cost of $9,800. POOR BOX Thank you for your contributions of $ to Catholic Charities of Montgomery County. The Poor Box next weekend, February 1/2, will benefit the Monsignor Christopher Fund, which provides need-based scholarships to our parish school.
