People, Look East... #482 MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES In Advent we prepare to celebrate the past; we prepare to receive Christ into our lives in the present; and we prepare for the end of the world and the coming of Heaven. These three ideas are represented visually in the form of the Advent Wreath. The Advent wreath originated a few hundred years ago among the Lutherans of eastern Germany. It was probably suggested by the many light symbols which were prominent in folk customs at the end of November and beginning of December. At that time of the year, the pagans of Northern Europe celebrated the month of Yule (December) with the burning of lights and fires to dispel the gloom of the short days and long dark nights of winter. Gradually, these practices were given a Christian meaning and lights came to be used as religious symbols of Advent in the home and church. The symbolism of the Advent wreath reminds us of Old Testament times, when humanity was sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death (Luke 1:79); when the prophets, illumined by God, foretold a Redeemer; and when the hearts of men yearned for a Messiah who would save the world. The wreath - an ancient symbol of victory and glory - symbolizes the fulfillment of time in the coming of Christ and the glory of His birth. The wreath, again, is circular and this is a symbol of the eternity of God, who, like a circle, has neither a beginning nor an end.

ADVENT GIVING TREE The Advent Giving Tree program, which distributes Christmas gifts to many area charities and nursing homes, concludes weekend. Please bring your gift to church in a Christmas Gift Bag, with the tag attached, by 5:00 pm Sunday, December 14. If you have lost a tag or have any Giving Tree questions, contact Denise Sintetos ( ) or Kathy Pascale ( ). Thank you for your generous support. LESSONS AND CAROLS Celebrate the holiday season at Saint Jane with the annual Festival Service Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas this Sunday evening, December 14, at 7:30 pm. Scripture readings foretelling the birth of Christ will be interspersed with music from the Parish Children s Choir, the Parish Choir, and congregational carols. FAITH FORMATION CHRISTMAS PLAY Parishioners are invited to the Faith Formation Christmas Play this Tuesday, December 16, at 4:15 pm in the church. ADVENT RECONCILIATION OPPORTUNITIES In addition to regularly scheduled confessions on Saturdays at 3:45 pm, we will hold an Advent Reconciliation Liturgy this Tuesday, December 16 at 7:30 pm. After a brief Liturgy of the Word, priests will be available to hear private confessions. VISIT FROM ST. NICHOLAS At the Coffee and Donuts Social after the 10:00 am Mass next Sunday, December 21, we will have a visit from St. Nicholas, the one who is the model for our Santa Claus. The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas. He was raised to be a devout Christian by his parents who died when he was young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need and his love for children. To read more on St. Nicholas, visit OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN ON CHRISTMAS EVE Children are invited to participate at the 4:00 pm and 6:30 pm Christmas Eve Masses. At the 4:00 pm Mass, the children will be part of the homily. At the 6:30 pm Mass children are invited to join in acting out the Christmas story. We will need many shepherds and angels, as well as animals, and Mary and Joseph. Practice for both Masses will be held on Thursday, December 23, at 4:15 pm in the church. REMEMBER IN PRAYER... those who are sick, and all those in our nursing homes and hospitals, especially Fr. Stanislaw Podlewski, Colette McNickle, Alyssa Malcomson, Greg Kramlich, Marisa Spadaro, Mary Jane Kelly, Betty Hannan, Pat Flaherty, Maureen Stradley, Joseph Dzialo, and Michael Gretschel.... those who have died, especially Eleanor Endersbee, Judith White-Burgy, and Isabelle Fitzpatrick. HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY All high schools students: come join us for a time of Christmas cheer on Sunday, December 21 from 6:15 7:30 pm at the Seton Center. We will share the meaning of Christmas and decorate cookies. Bring a dozen undecorated sugar cookies; we will provide the frosting and sprinkles! IN OUR LITURGY & MUSIC MINISTRIES CHURCH CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Volunteers are needed to help decorate the church for Christmas on Monday, December 22 from 7:00-9:00 pm. HELP WITH THE HYMNALS On Saturday, January 10, from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, we will make the transition from our current Ritual Song hymnal to our beautiful new Worship hymnals. Your help is needed! We need volunteers to help with removing the old hymnals from the pews and placing them in Caulfield Hall, unpacking the new hymnals from the boxes, placing the donor bookplate labels inside the new hymnals, and placing them in the pews. IN OUR YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP This new parish group is for single Catholics, ages 22-35, who meet monthly for spiritual and social events. DINE IN/OUT THIS TUESDAY TO SUPPORT SCHOOL PLAY Make dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support St. Jane de Chantal school s sixth grade production of Annie Jr. Just come into Chipotle (7600 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda; across from Safeway) on Tuesday, December 16, between 5:00 and 8:00 pm. Tell the cashier you're supporting De Chantal to make sure that 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the school and this year s musical. Dine in or order take-out on Tuesday night. All are welcome. READERS ARE LEADERS Mrs. Theim s 8th grade reading program is entitled Readers Are Leaders, and the summer reading transitioning into 8th grade includes incentives, bonus points on reading tests, and prizes for dedicated readers. Several students were recently awarded Barnes and Noble gift cards in recognition of the number of novels they read this summer. First Place: Julianne Madden; Second Place: Maxime Zelenko and Sophie Ryan; Third Place: Lucas Jung and Maggie Maynard. HIGH SCHOOL TESTING The 8th graders were sequestered in their classroom for a morning of the High School Placement Test (HSPT). This is the high school entrance test administered throughout the archdiocese. St. Jane de Chantal students typically score well and continue their education in Catholic high schools. A VISIT FROM ST. NICHOLAS The feast of St. Nicholas was celebrated in the school in an appropriate manner. Following the tradition, every student and teacher placed one shoe in the hallway outside of the classroom doors and, while they were studying, the shoes were filled with candy. Everyone enjoys this special treat during the season of Advent. POOR BOX The Poor Box next weekend, December 20/21, will benefit Rosaria Communities, an agency of the Archdiocese of Washington which provides affordable housing for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities, and works in partnership with parishes in the archdiocese, service providers and other public and private entities to provide high quality, faith-based community oriented homes.
