Go to the World... #532 MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES Today s readings speak of continued reflections on prophecy and ministry: the call from God comes whether we want it or not. From the first reading, where Amaziah told Amos to stop his prophesying, to the Gospel, where Jesus chooses his Twelve Apostles and sends them forth to evangelize, we learn that God has a plan that is entirely unknown to us. In the second reading, Paul invites us to contemplate on the mystery of our existence and to accept our predestination as chosen ones of Christ. Today, we are charged with the question, Am I listening to God s voice within my soul? Through the sacraments of the Church, Christ chooses us. Let us be more like his apostles and follow him. Today s Procession Hymn, Lord, You Give the Great Commission, was written by Jeffery W. Rowthorn in 1978 while he was Chapel Minister at Yale Divinity School. This powerful text about the various ministries of the Christian church has two striking features: each stanza includes a quotation of Christ's words (usually from Matthew), and a concluding refrain line turns each stanza into a prayer. Christ's words are applied to the tasks of God's people in the world with a fervent prayer that asks the Spirit to equip us to carry out these ministries faithfully. The hymn at the Offertory was written by Carl Daw, who is the Curator of Hymnological Collections and Adjunct Professor of Hymnology at Boston University. The first stanza of this hymn is a paraphrase of today s Gospel and speaks of the journey that the Apostles went on to share the Good News. The second stanza asks us, the singer, if we are ready to act as the Apostles did and serve the mission of Christ. Lastly, the third stanza evokes the Holy Spirit to work in us, through the gifts bestowed on us at our confirmation. During the communion procession, we will sing, Here I am, Lord, written by Dan Schutte. Schutte is a former priest and member of the St. Louis Jesuits, a group of Catholic composers who popularized an easy listening/folk music style of church music through their compositions and recordings, mainly from their (continued)

To this day, musicians contemplate the unique resemblance of Schutte s tune to the theme song for the popular television show, The Brady Bunch. If you can t hear the resemblance, I ll point it out to you. A lot of the music dating back to the 70 s was composed with popular tunes in mind; it was thought that this would trick people into singing. Beyond the melody, Schutte s text speaks of mission and ministry. The verses are sung as the voice of God selecting various individuals for his work and the refrain is our (the people s) response to His call. Theologically, it is on the light side, but we can attach deeper meaning to the words through our own private meditation and prayer. The concluding hymn, Go to the World, was written by Sylvia Dunstan. The text empowers the singer, as a modern day disciple of Christ, to hear the Call of God in our hearts and to go into the world, proclaiming his reign through Christ our Lord. How wonderful to be able to sing these hymn texts today! The music is rich with the theme of the Mass. IN OUR PARISH Can t find the bulletin you brought home from church? RELIGIOUS EDUCATION ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT We are looking for a part-time administrative assistant in the Religious Education Office at St. Jane. A candidate would have an interest in and love for the ministry of Religious Education and Spiritual Formation; help with registrations, secretarial duties, and support for the various programs. He/she would need to have worked with a database, know Microsoft Office Suite, and be a welcoming presence to all the families of the parish. Part-time hours would include Tuesday afternoons and evenings and an occasional weekend. POTOMAC ORGAN INSTITUTE The Potomac Organ Institute was founded in 1988 to interest young people in the field of church music by providing instruction on the pipe organ. Auditions for prospective students (grades 7 and up, and adults) are held each summer and scholarship recipients receive one year of free organ instruction from a local professional organist from September through May. Auditions will be held on Wednesday evening, August 26, and again on Tuesday evening, September 1 at All Saints Church, Chevy Chase, MD. For more information, including a downloadable audition form and list of requirements, go to VISITING CHILDREN S CHOIR FROM FRANCE On the weekend of August 22/23, our parish will host les Petits Chanteurs de France, an acclaimed boychoir from Paris, France. The ensemble, composed of 22 boys ranging from 7-17 years old, will offer a concert on Saturday, August 22 at 7:45 pm in church (free admission/free-will offering to support the choir will be accepted). On Sunday, August 23, the choir will provide music at the 10:00 am Mass. We need your help! In order to host this wonderful group, we need to provide home stays for the boys at parishioners homes (2 or more boys at each residence). IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars REGISTRATION Registration for next year s CCD classes is taking place. Children ages 3 high school are welcome to attend the classes. Children ages 3 and 4 meet for FOOT (Faith Of

3 Our Toddlers) on Sunday mornings during the 10:00 am Mass. Grades K 5 meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4:30 5:45 pm, grades 6 8 meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 8:15 pm, and high school students meet on Sundays from 6:00p 7:30 pm. FIAT DISCERNMENT CAMP FOR HIGH SCHOOL WOMEN A Fiat Discernment Camp for high school-aged women will be held at Mount St. Mary s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD on July This three-day camp includes prayer, talks, discussions with religious sisters, games and sports, and is a joint venture with the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Additional information and online registration are available under the Consecrated Life tab at RETREAT FOR SEPARATED AND DIVORCED CATHOLICS A retreat for separated and divorced Catholics will be held at the Loyola Retreat House in Faulkner, Maryland from July Monsignor Maury O Connell, the SDC Chaplain, will be the director for the retreat with the theme of Peace with God, Family, and Friends. Attendees will meet in large sessions and small groups to explore the effect of divorce on their relationship with the Church, family, and friends. To help in this process, Maryland s bishops have prepared an advance directive, the Catholic Declaration for Health Care Decision Making, through which you can appoint a health care agent and express your wishes for spiritual support, medical care and treatment, pain-relieving medication, and medically-assisted nutrition and hydration.
