I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say... #768 LENT IN OUR PARISH LENTEN FOOD DRIVE St. Jane s is hosting a Lenten Food Drive to help Manna Food, our local area food bank. Non-perishable food items need to be turned in this weekend, March 2/3, to Caulfield Hall. FASTING & ABSTINENCE All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence for those age 14 and above. On weekdays during Lent, there is no obligation to fast, however, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended. OPERATION RICE BOWL Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten season will help Catholic Relief Services continue to provide life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries. CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our world and to end global poverty. For example, this week we focus our prayers, fasting and almsgiving on Lesotho, where many children lack access to quality education. Only 73% of primary school-age children in Lesotho are enrolled in school. Give to your Rice Bowl this week to support communities working with CRS to provide educational opportunities for children. For more information, visit STATIONS OF THE CROSS The public celebration of the Way of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent (through March 22). All will take place in the church at 7:30 pm. CONFESSIONS This Lenten season, each Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Washington will have confessions available every Wednesday evening. Confessions will be heard at St. Jane on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. Learn more at Confessions are also heard at St. Jane each Saturday, 3:45-4:45 pm. IN OUR PARISH GIRL SCOUT COOKIES Girl Scouts will be selling cookies after all Masses this weekend, March 2/3. PROJECT RACHEL FOUNDER Vicki Thorn, founder of Project Rachel, will be speaking here at St. Jane de Chantal on Friday, March 15, in Caulfield Hall, at 8:00 pm (immediately following Stations of the Cross). The title of her talk will be: What they didn t teach you in Sex Ed: The biochemistry of sex and the fascinating science of attraction. Refreshments will be served. WIDOWS & WIDOWERS Come to Post Cana s St. Patrick s Day party on Sunday, March 24, 3:00 to 6:00 pm, at Leisure World. Enjoy a lovely buffet dinner and music. Cost is $20. Post Cana, an organization sponsored by the Archdiocesan Office of Family Life, provides social and religious activities for widows and widowers of all ages and faiths. 3 PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS The Pastoral Council advises and assists the pastor in achieving the goals of the parish. This includes: developing and recommending parish policies; striving to represent the needs and views of parishioners as a whole; coordinating activities among the parish organizations; and, performing other tasks to promote the mission and overall good of the parish. The Pastoral Council does not implement programs which are the responsibility of the parish staff or parish organizations, but instead addresses issues that fall outside their purview. Some current matters in which the Pastoral Council is involved include: assisting in social justice initiatives; enhancing the communication of parish activities and needs through a variety of outlets; planning for upcoming parish celebrations; and, developing our evangelization programs. The Pastoral Council consists of 15 members, five of whom are elected each year for three-year terms. It also includes the School Principal, the Director of Faith Formation, and the heads or representatives of the Sodality, Finance Council, Home and School Association, School Board, and CYO. Elections will be held during April to select five council members for a term running from May 2013 until May If you are 18 years of age or older and interested in serving the parish as a member of the council, or if you wish to nominate a fellow parishioner who meets these criteria, please complete the nomination form below and return it to the parish office by 5:00 pm Friday, March 22. IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS Visit the Faith Formation page at for information on the various programs, registration forms and calendars. DCYM SMASH SMASH stands for Sunday Mass and Social Hour. All high school students are invited to SMASH this Sunday, March 3. The Youth Mass begins at 5:00 pm; the social hour begins at 6:00 pm. CINDERELLA The sixth grade is very excited to announce their production of Rodgers and Hammerstein s Cinderella on March 6 and 7, at 7:00 pm, in Christopher Hall. They have been hard at work singing, dancing, and acting. Please come waltzing your way in to support our 11 and 12 year olds as they bring you such classics as Ten Minutes Ago, A Lovely Night, The Prince is Giving a Ball, and the ever popular Stepsister s Lament. 4 MARCH 3, 2013 CATHOLIC BUSINESS NETWORK Eighth grade students submitted essays to the scholarship contest sponsored by the Catholic Business Network. Students wrote about what their Catholic education means to them and how it will shape their future. The following students were awarded scholarships in varying amounts to help defray tuition costs at the Catholic high schools they will attending in the fall: Tess Daniels, Emma Eder, Nick Pottker, Joe Reilly, Kayla Tiller, and Julia Kane. They will be honored at the Annual CBN Scholarship Luncheon in March. HOOPS FOR HEART Congratulations to the St. Jane de Chantal School and community! With your help, the students raised almost $12,000 for the American Heart Association through the Hoops for Heart program. Mr. Dugan s class came in first place in the classroom fundraising contest and will enjoy a Ledo s Pizza party. They raised $2,680. Mrs. Vizas class came in second and Mrs. Hughes class came in third. Kindergartner Abigail Palumbo was the school s top fundraiser raising with $725. Congratulations to 8th graders Tyler Lightcap and Ryan Myers who assisted Mrs. Tehan with this annual fundraiser. Our goal was $10,000 and we surpassed it! Way to go St. Jane s! WAX MUSEUM The 4th grade had a great trip to Madame Tusseau s Wax Museum. They had a presentation where they learned how the wax figures are made. They then toured the museum, including the Hall of Presidents. It was great fun seeing the wax figure of the President they did a research paper and presentation on in November. They also participated in a scavenger hunt about the Presidents. Many of the students also made a model of their own hand in wax. ANNUAL WEDDING JUBILARIAN MASS On Sunday, June 16, at 2:00 pm, Cardinal Donald Wuerl will preside at the annual event honoring married couples celebrating 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 51+ years of marriage. The Jubilarian Mass will be held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Personalized certificates signed by Cardinal Wuerl will be distributed to the couples following the ceremony or mailed, should they be unable to attend.
