1 THE ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT / YEAR C Entrance Hymn... Forgive Our Sins # (Sun. 5 pm) Forgive Our Sins #967 Readings in Worship hymnal at #1041 Entrance Antiphon: Ps 43:1-2 Give me justice, O God, and plead my cause against a nation that is faithless. From the deceitful and cunning rescue me, for you, O God, are my strength. Reading I: Is 43:16-21 Drawing on the ancient story of the Exodus, the prophet reassures the people at a time of great danger and suffering that they ain't seen nothin' yet. Psalm Response: Ps 126 A communal lament. Recalling God's mighty deeds in the past, the people ask God to remember such divine intervention on their behalf as the motive for taking action now. Reading II: Phil 3:8-14 All the mystics have made a similar point: Once you experience salvation through Christ and are aware how free a gift it is, given without consideration for anything we might have done, you realize that it alone is worth holding on to. Gospel: Jn 8:1-11 The story of the woman caught in adultery is a story of great compassion and divine forgiveness. After all, the woman was caught in the act (presumably, with a man who got away!). She was guilty, yet Jesus convinced the crowd not to punish her as the Torah required, and then he forgave her sin. Communion Antiphon: Jn 8: Has no one condemned you, woman? No one, Lord. Neither shall I condemn you. From now on, sin no more. Penitential Act... from The Roman Missal #205A... (Sun. 5 pm) from Black Mountain Liturgy #266 Responsorial Psalm... MAD MARCH SCIENCE MONTH Our entire school is alive with science! Kindergarten learned about the plant's life cycle, the parts of a plant, and planted their own sunflower seeds. First grade used their five senses to observe the world around them. Third grade conducted a stem experiment where they attempted to build the tallest tower using only craft sticks and plastic cups. Next they will make parachutes for Lego men to see which materials would enable the Lego person to stay in the air the longest. Fourth grade explored the phases of the moon with an Oreo experiment. Fifth grade tested how heat can increase the temperature of a substance, or make it change from liquid to gas. The seventh grade studied animal and plant cells, making 3D models of a cell. The eighth grade studied Newton's Laws and applied them to rocket science. Students worked in small groups to design and build bottle rockets. They launched over 30 rockets this past week. But there is something more [in today s Gospel] than forgiveness. The law said that the adulteress had to be punished. But Jesus went beyond the law. He doesn t tell her that adultery is not a sin, but he doesn t condemn her with the law. This is the mystery of Jesus mercy. Mercy doesn t eliminate sin, for it is God s forgiveness that does this. Mercy is the manner in which God forgives. In this situation, Jesus goes further and counsels the woman to sin no more."
