Concluding Hymn...From Ashes to the Living Font (Vs. 3 for Lent II)... #463 MUSIC & LITURGY NOTES The Liturgy of the Word follows the Introductory Rites of the Mass. This part of the Mass begins with a reading from the Old Testament and ends with the Prayer of the Faithful. God speaks to His people during the readings of the Mass and we are taught that Christ himself is made present in the midst of the faithful through His word. The First Reading is usually taken from the Old Testament, except during Eastertide, when portions of the Acts of the Apostles are read, which speak of the founding of the early Church during the days following Christ s crucifixion. The Responsorial Psalm follows, which is sung in response to the First Reading. The Book of Psalms is among the oldest writings in the bible, and is frequently quoted in the New Testament ( sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God" Col. 3:16). Comprised of 150 chapters, psalms are encouraged to be sung as a link to the Jewish tradition, and to the fact that Jesus and his Disciples sang the psalms during their lives on earth. The Second Reading, taken from the New Testament, follows. We sometimes call this reading an epistle, which is a term derived from the Greek work, epistolē, meaning, letter. Paul wrote epistles, as well as James, Peter, and John. Their letters were written to early Christian communities. The Gospel reading is seen as the climatic point of the Liturgy of the Word, and thus is announced by an acclamation. Outside of Lent, we proclaim, Alleluia, a Latin derivation of the Hebrew word for Praise Yahweh. During Lent, a season of fasting and penitence, we do not sing Alleluia because of its connotations of joy and festivity. The Gospel reading is read by the priest or deacon, because it quotes the words of Jesus and is seen as an icon of Christ. The faithful sign themselves on the forehead, lips, and hearts while silently saying, May the words of the Gospel be on my mind, my lips and my heart, and the priest or deacon kiss the Book of Gospels out of reverence to Christ s Word. 3 STATIONS OF THE CROSS The public celebration of the Way of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent (March 6-27) at 7:30 pm, and on Good Friday (April 3) at 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm. All will take place in the church. CONFESSIONS LENT IN OUR PARISH Confessions are heard at St. Jane on Wednesdays from 6:45-8:15 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time, or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. STABAT MATER Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi will be performed on Sunday, March 15, at 3:30 pm, in church. A favorite among Lenten musical reflections, the Stabat Mater (The Sorrowful Mother) is a musical selection that meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. This admired work is performed by St. Jane s staff singers, Grace Gilday, soprano, and Stephanie Conticchio, alto, along with the Celebrated String Quartet and Andrew Vu, organ. PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS The Pastoral Council consists of 15 members, five of whom are elected each year for three-year terms. It also includes the School Principal, the Director of Faith Formation, and the heads or representatives of the Sodality, Finance Council, Home and School Association, School Board, and CYO. Elections will be held during April to select five council members for a term running from May 2015 until May If you are 18 years of age or older and interested in serving the parish as a member of the council, or if you wish to nominate a fellow parishioner who meets these criteria, please complete the nomination form below and return it to the parish office by 5:00 pm Monday, March 23. HOSPITAL MINISTRY One of our parish ministries touches people s hearts, souls, and faith that is the ministry provided to Suburban Hospital by some of the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion of our parish. We try to have two Eucharistic Ministers bring Communion to Catholic patients at the hospital every day. We are in need of more ministers, especially for Tuesdays and Fridays. YOUTH MINISTRY STATIONS OF THE CROSS Youth Ministry will be portraying a living Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 13 at 7:30 pm. All are welcome to come and see the re-enactment of the stations. Any High school student is welcome to join in. Practices will be Mondays, March 2 and March 9 at 7:00 pm in the church. IN OUR YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP For single Catholics, ages Meet monthly for spiritual and social events. We will gather for Mass Bring a friend who is curious about why we do what we do in church! LENTEN MEDITATION HIKE Welcome spring by getting outside for a scenic hike on Saturday, March 21! We will discuss some points to meditate on before setting off as "a group in solitude." We will stay together as a group but the intention is not to talk, but rather to reflect and meditate as we engage in God s creation. After the hike, we will discuss the experience over SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT hot chocolate or another weather-appropriate snack! SCIENCE FAIR The school science fair this year included remarkable projects from students throughout the school. Seventh and eighth grade students presented their projects before independent judges on Friday night and Saturday morning. The winners are 1st Place: Cecelia Swartz; 2nd Place: Olivia Fuster; and 3rd Place: tie between Emma Tarquinio and Chris Khoury. Many received Honorable Mention and all were recognized at a school assembly. STEWARDSHIP Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his only son, Isaac.
