What Wondrous Love Is This... #749 LENT IN OUR PARISH OPERATION RICE BOWL Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten season will help Catholic Relief Services continue to provide life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries. CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our world and to end global poverty. For example, learn about Pakistan, where poor communities often do not have access to clean water. CRS helps communities build water pumps so they can have clean water nearby for use at home and on their farms. This week, consider fasting from all beverages except for water, and donate what you saved to your Rice Bowl. For more information, visit STATIONS OF THE CROSS The public celebration of the Way of the Cross will be held every Friday during Lent (through March 22). All will take place in the church at 7:30 pm. On Good Friday, the Way of the Cross will be held at 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm. CONFESSIONS This Lenten season, each Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Washington will have confessions available every Wednesday evening. Confessions will be heard at St. Jane on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. IN OUR PARISH DONUT SOCIAL All parishioners are invited to share coffee, donuts, and friendship after the 8:00 am, 10:00 am, and 12 noon Masses this Sunday, March 17. The featured organization this month is the Vocations Committee. Representatives will be available to answer questions you might have regarding the different vocations. Do you know the difference between a transitional deacon and a permanent deacon, or between a diocesan priest and a religious priest? The Youth Group will be taking donations at the coffee to benefit a local charity. The St. Jane de Chantal HSA will be selling car raffle tickets. Four new cars will be raffled off to four lucky winners on May 18. Tickets are $5 each. St. Jane School will receive 50% of the proceeds from our ticket sales, which will go towards improving our school safety. MSGR. ECKLE AWARD On March 10, Fr. John received the 2013 Msgr. Harry A. Eckle Award for Outstanding Service in Health Care Ministry from the John Carroll Society. The society is comprised of Catholics from various areas of professional and business life in the Washington area. On March 10 there was a special Mass, the Rose Mass, and a luncheon at the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, which celebrated the work of many people in health care. Msgr. Eckle had been a pastor at Our Lady of Victory Church in Washington, D.C., and ministered to the Catholic patients and to the staff at Sibley Hospital for many years even after he retired as pastor. Fr. John is humbled with this recognition of his many years and places of ministry as chaplain. It is also a recognition of the many people who have assisted him the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and the different parish and hospital staffs. SODALITY MORNING OF RECOLLECTION Come renew your spirit at the annual Morning of Recollection. All parishioners are invited to attend one morning of peace and preparation during Lent at the Morning of Recollection, following 8:00 am Mass on Saturday, March 23. Our speaker will be Father Giese. PASTORAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS The Pastoral Council advises and assists the pastor in achieving the goals of the parish. This includes: developing and recommending parish policies; striving to represent the needs and views of parishioners as a whole; coordinating activities among the parish organizations; and, performing other tasks to promote the mission and overall good of the parish. The Pastoral Council does not implement programs which are the responsibility of the parish staff or parish organizations, but instead addresses issues that fall outside their purview. Some current matters in which the Pastoral Council is involved include: assisting in social justice initiatives; enhancing the communication of parish activities and needs through a variety of outlets; planning for upcoming parish celebrations; and, developing our evangelization programs. The Pastoral Council consists of 15 members, five of whom are elected each year for three-year terms. It also includes the School Principal, the Director of Faith Formation, and the heads or representatives of the Sodality, Finance Council, Home and School Association, School Board, and CYO. Elections will be held during April to select five council members for a term running from May 2013 until May If you are 18 years of age or older and interested in serving the parish as a member of the council, or if you wish to nominate a fellow parishioner who meets these criteria, please complete the nomination form below and return it to the parish office by 5:00 pm Friday, March 22. SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE Every year students in grades 3 through 8 compete in the school spelling bee in cooperation with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Christopher Khoury, a fifth grader, won the school bee and advanced to the regional competition that was conducted on March 2. Christopher finished in fourth place at the regional bee! This is a remarkable achievement and we are very proud that he so successfully represented our school. GLASSES CLUB The Glasses Club annual breakfast was held Tuesday, March 5. All students and faculty who wear glasses were invited to join the Glasses Club for their annual breakfast feast. The service project this year is collecting used prescription glasses and non-prescription UV protected glasses for Unite for Sight. DECHANTAL DASH Registration for the De Chantal Dash is now open! The De Chantal Dash is a 5K and 1 mile fun run to be held Saturday, April 20. All are welcome to register and run in this race, which raises money for the Msgr. Christopher Scholarship Fund and the Home and School Association. Go to and register today. Opportunities to sponsor the Dash can also be found on the website. YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY ANNUAL 7 CHURCH WALK The archdiocesan Office of Young Adult Ministry is hosting the 10th Annual 7 Church Walk on Saturday, March 23. Join young adults (20s and 30s) for the annual walk/ pilgrimage as we bring a Rome tradition to DC. ANNUAL WEDDING JUBILARIAN MASS On Sunday, June 16, at 2:00 pm, Cardinal Donald Wuerl will preside at the annual event honoring married couples celebrating 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 51+ years of marriage. The Jubilarian Mass will be held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Personalized certificates signed by Cardinal Wuerl will be distributed to the couples following the ceremony or mailed, should they be unable to attend.
