Work, school, and social commitments can eat up our time and cause us to lose touch with one another. It is not unusual to hear that two siblings have not really seen each other all week because of all the running each must do. Little ones especially can get lost in the shuffle and feel neglected and lost. We need to make time for each other. One family makes it a point to spend time together. At least twice a week, they schedule some time before or after dinner to sit and chat as a family. Everyone talks about what is happening in his or her life and everyone gets to listen. In spite of initial resistance, it is now everyone s favorite time of the week. So, when was the last time you checked in? What is your family doing to be a family? Dinner? Game night? Conversation? It does not take much to keep in touch. The dinner table is the boardroom of life. Find out what s happening, who s succeeding and who discovered something new. 4 Kerry s Sending Forth Party Please join us Saturday, August 29, to celebrate the many years Kerry has dedicated to the service of our parish community. We will have a special blessing for her at the 4:30 p.m. Mass and then gather at the Rectory s backyard for the party. We want to give her a memory book full of special mementos of all these years. Please pick up a scrapbook page from the back of the church, fill it with your fondest memory of Kerry, then return it to the office. We need help to put the party together. Memorial Donations at Our Lady of Sorrows The death of a loved one is a difficult time. The Pastoral Staff and members of, through our prayers and outreach, try to console those who grieve. It is our hope that our pastoral care combined with the Catholic funeral liturgy will offer both comfort in present sorrow and great hope for the future. Many families request that people make a memorial donation to a variety of good philanthropic organizations. We ask you to consider designating as the recipient for memorial donations. This will celebrate your deceased loved one s connection with Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and support the ongoing work of the parish. 100% of the memorial donations made to Our Lady of Sorrows Parish will be used to enhance the work and ministries of the parish. If you choose the parish for memorial donations, please feel free to use the following announcement: The family requests that memorial donations be made to 59 Cottage Street Sharon, MA FAITH FORMATION UPDATE: We have interviewed one candidate for the Youth Ministry position we are trying to fill and will interview another candidate this week. When a final decision has been reached, we will promptly announce the appointment of our new Youth Ministry Coordinator. Soon, we will be posting a part-time position seeking Administrative support for the Faith Formation Office. Once we have proper support in place, registration will open. We are in need of Catechists to help teach pre-k through- Grade 5 on Sunday mornings, 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. In addition, we need Small Group Facilitators to help guide monthly discussions with our Middle School youth on Sunday nights, 6:30-8 p.m. and our Confirmation one students twice a month on Monday nights, 7-8:30 p.m. Training is provided as well as on going support. Sharing our faith and helping younger people grow in awareness of God is a simple, profound act, and much easier than you may imagine. It's finally here and while we may be rejoicing especially after last winter, for many of the Food Pantry clients it puts an extra burden on parents who now have children at home all day that used to receive lunch and sometimes breakfast in school. So once again the Christian Service Commission and the volunteers at the Food Pantry are asking that you continue to remember them with your usual generosity of weekly donations. They can be left in the rear of the church, in Bullock Center and O'Connell Hall. As always, the volunteers and the families are deeply grateful for your donations. By Dr. Scott Hahn One Flock As the Twelve return from their first missionary journey in today's Gospel, our readings continue to reflect on the authority and mission of the Church. Jeremiah says in the First Reading that Israel's leaders, through godlessness and fanciful teachings, had mislead and scattered God's people. He promises God will send a shepherd, a king and son of David, to gather the lost sheep and appoint for them new shepherds. The crowd gathering on the green grass in today's Gospel is the start of the remnant that Jeremiah promised would be brought back to the meadow of Israel. The people seem to sense that Jesus is the Lord, the good shepherd, the king they've been waiting for. Jesus is moved to pity, seeing them as sheep without a shepherd. This phrase was used by Moses to describe Israel's need for a shepherd to succeed him. And as Moses appointed Joshua, Jesus appointed the Twelve to continue shepherding His people on earth. Jesus had said there were other sheep who did not belong to Israel's fold, but would hear His voice and be joined to the one flock of the one shepherd. In God's plan, the Church is to seek out first the lost sheep of the house of Israel, and then to bring all nations into the fold. Paul, too, in today's Epistle, sees the Church as a new creation, in which those nations who were once far off from God are joined as "one new person" with the children of Israel. As we sing in today's Psalm, through the Church, the Lord, our good shepherd, still leads people to the verdant pastures of the kingdom, to the restful waters of baptism; He still anoints with the oil of confirmation, and spreads the Eucharistic table before all people, filling their cups to overflowing. Collection July 12 The average cost to run the parish is $11,732 per week and our expectation is that 69% ($8,095) will come from the weekly offertory. On July 12, the parishioners contributed $6,404. Saint of the Week Mary Magdalene July 22 St. Mary of Magdala was a disciple of Christ who was healed by him when he cast out seven devils. She stood at the foot of the cross as Jesus died, and went to the tomb to anoint his body on the morning of Easter Sunday. She was the first witness to Jesus resurrection when she found his tomb empty. In St Mark s Gospel, it is Mary Magdalene to whom the risen Jesus first appears and further to this, in St John s account, Jesus gives her a message to pass on to his brethren. Since the time of Pope Gregory the Great, a tradition in the Western church arose that identified Mary Magdalene as the unnamed sinner who anointed Christ s feet, and Mary of Bethany, the sister of Martha and Lazarus.
