3 Traditions: We can live with them, but! We dip our fingers into the holy water font, a tradition. We make the sign of the cross on our bodies, another tradition. We genuflect and kneel, still other traditions! All these actions are parts of our religious traditions and rituals. They are part of who we are as Catholic Christians and must be more than external signs. There is a certain comfort in living by these and other such traditions. They give us a connection to the past, provide us with order and the security that we are continuing the faith traditions of our ancestors. Besides all these things they are a wonderful unifying force in keeping us together as a community. Traditions help us to hold on to our past, but they must reflect an inward reality of a living faith being externally expressed. When some Pharisees questioned Jesus about why His disciples didn t follow the traditional, ceremonial washings of their elders He replied that they were following the commands of God and not mere man-made externals. Perhaps He was upset because these Pharisees were making their traditions into mere idolatrous symbols. They were making their practice of religion an external sign of accomplishment rather than gifts of God graces. They were using religious laws and practices to divide people rather than to unite them. They used religious traditions to put people down rather than to lift them up or bring them closer to God. If God is only on our lips, and not in our hearts, then can our faith be true? St. James writes: Those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act they will blessed in their doing. We come to know ourselves by understanding Gods laws, our purpose for ourselves. (James 1:22) Signs and external expression of our traditions are often done more easily then deep-seated convictions of the heart. Be concerned, as Jesus was, that you are consistent in not only looking like His followers but being dedicated disciples. Remember to stay focused on God who is the center of our traditions. What should be washed is not so much pots and pans but our hearts. Before we share in the eucharistic meal are our hearts clean? (Matt 18:21) The apostle asked this question of Jesus and He replied, in today s parlance, every time. Recall the parable of the unforgiving servant whose debt forgiven was unwilling to forgive a small debt of a fellow servant. Jesus taught the logic of love; that forgiveness breeds forgiveness. Easy to say, hard to do. When we ask Jesus forgiveness and thank Him for His mercy, we then must do likewise and forgive those who have wronged us. As we accomplish this in small hurts, it will grow to doing it every time. Let s practice the stewardship of forgiveness. 5 RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Also we use this process for those who are baptized in other Christian religions and want to become Roman Catholic. RCIA is a process that brings the un-baptized people into our church for people who are interested in becoming Catholic. The program is a journey of life experiences that is shared with the team members and the Candidates. We use the weekly Gospel readings, videos and a book that explains our Catholic Faith. There are no tests, we love questions, and the best part is we will take this journey together as a family. Classes will start Sunday September 9 th, during the 9 o clock Mass right after the Homily about 9:15AM and finishes by 10:30AM. If anyone you know is interested they can call the HTC office at or Steve Kula at GIVE ALOHA AT FOODLAND TO HELP US RAISE FUNDS! Upcoming Family Promise Weeks Our next host week on the 2018 rotation schedule is from Oct ; however, because there's a dire shortage of host churches, we will kokua by allowing the families to stay at our Makai House from Sept During this extra week, the Family Promise staff will take care of everything else--they will clean; set up; provide their own linens; and provide all the food, meals and supplies. As with other host churches, the families will go to the Family Center during the day. Our parish liaisons during that week will be Peter and Cheri Robertson.

6 Thrift Shop Christmas Sale November 3, 2018 Holy Trinity Church Gym Just a reminder that on November 3rd the Thrift Shop will be hosting a Christmas Sale. They have trees, decorations, garland, Nutcrackers, wreaths, and so much more. Mark your calendars, you don t want to miss this one. A sale to beat all sales. If you have any Christmas themed donations that you would like to donate for this sale please place them in the Thrift Shop donation bins.
