STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross devotion begins at 7pm the following Fridays in the church: March 22nd, 29th, April 5th, & 12th. On Good Friday, April 19th, the eighth grade class will lead the Stations of the Cross in the gymnasium at 3pm. It offers simple, yet powerful, ways for everyone to bring Lenten spirituality to life. Rice Bowl contributions support projects that assist our brothers and sisters in need, both overseas and here in the US. 75% of Rice Bowl contributions are sent to Catholic Relief Services and help fund development projects overseas that help increase and maintain communities access to food. 25% of the contributions fund local poverty and hunger alleviation programs in dioceses in the US. Tom will invite us to enter a world that only the gift of faith can reveal to us, a vision that transforms our way of looking at our lives in the world around us. Father Tom is a native of Seattle and was in residence in the early 70 s here at our parish while he was the Archdiocesan Director of the Catholic Youth Organization. He was active in both the Cursillo and Worldwide Marriage Encounter movements. A published author, his latest book, Rediscovering a Pearl of Great Price, The Surprising Sacrament of Matrimony, was selected for the Seattle University Search for Meaning Book Festival in February of He retired from St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Federal Way in July of 2008 after 25 years as pastor. He will be ordained 57 years in May. Based on Dante s writings, the seven deadly sins correspond to the seven levels of Dante s Mt. Purgatory. Pride, envy, anger, sloth, gluttony, avarice, and lust are all presented as patterns of dysfunction within us that lead to unhappiness. However, Bishop Barron shows us how to counteract these seven sinful patterns through a conscious process of opposition, which are the seven lively virtues." 4 Second Sunday of Lent Page 3 March 17, 2019 CALLED TO SERVE AS CHRIST CAMPAIGN Thank you to the 250 families from our parish who contributed $1,536,298 to the Called to Serve as Christ Campaign. Because of your generosity we have reached our parish goal. Your gifts will strengthen both senior priest pension and medical funds and support women religious throughout Western Washington. This is a difficult time to conduct a capital campaign but we appreciate your faith in the Archdiocese. Our church is committed to protecting vulnerable children and adults and your gifts are a sign of support for the many good priests, sisters, and nuns who need to be cared for in retirement. God Bless You. OLF MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP NEWS Edge Youth Group is for 6th - 8th graders - We have FUN with our faith, and we meet most Sundays in the Parish Center from 5:00 6:30 pm. This Sunday March 17th is our Lenten Service Night! We will make sack lunches for our neighbors at Tiny Houses Safe Harbor (formerly Tent City V). This week, they'd also be very grateful for coffee supplies: ground coffee, disposable hot cups, creamers, etc. Bring these items to youth group, and we'll deliver them with the lunches. Peter, James and John wanted to build a booth for Jesus and just stay on the mountain where His transfiguration took place. But the Son of God, the Chosen One, knew that He must instead keep moving toward His crucifixion. We, too, must rise from worship and do what we can to hasten the coming of the kingdom. Sunday School for Pre K-Jr. High takes place from 9:30-10:20 in the school. The curriculum is grade specific. All parish children are encouraged to register. Children's Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) takes place during 10:30 mass for children pre-k through 6yo or who are not preparing for 1st Holy Communion. Lessons are specific to this age group. Younger children are welcome accompanied with an adult. Children preparing for First Eucharist and older accompany their parents and participate in the sacrifice of the Mass in church. Children must be age six or younger. (Children seven years old or older are initiated through the RCIA process). Parents are required to: 1. Submit the necessary paperwork prior to scheduling a date for the baptism. 2. Reserve an open spot for their child(ren). 3. Have attended the class within the last 2 years. 4. Attend the rehearsal for each occurrence. In general, baptisms should be celebrated in the parish boundaries where you live. Requests from outside Our Lady of Fatima are considered on a case by case basis.

This is a fun and engaging opportunity for your child in grade 2-8 to be involved in providing sung prayer for Mass and learning more about our liturgy. Potter Stewart THOUGHTS ON LITURGY We Catholics are a sacramental people. God recognizes our need to see, touch, taste, smell, and hear in our worship of Him, and so how we worship is deeply tied to our five senses. As you look around the church and attend Mass over the Lenten season, think about ways in which we observe the traditional Lenten practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving during our worship together. For instance, we fast from the Gloria and Alleluia as required by the GIRM (General Instructions of the Roman Missal, the Catholic Church s instruction book on how to celebrate Mass). Our parish also chooses to pray Form A of the penitential rite at the beginning of the Mass which includes the Confiteor, complete with a gesture we feel on our chests. The Church also asks in the GIRM that our decorations are more muted and modest so that we may fast with our eyes, and even the statues will be covered as we approach Holy Week. Our ears also fast as the organ is required to refrain from preludes and postludes and other solo playing, and is only allowed to accompany and support the singing. All of this liturgical fasting helps us focus on what is in front of us in all its simplicity and wonder, the full presence of Christ in His word and in the Eucharist we share, and to offer ourselves more fully to God with our act of prayer and almsgiving. And when we feast in just a few weeks with all of the sounds, smells, and sights of our joyful Easter liturgy, we will experience that liturgy with renewed and grateful hearts more attuned to the ways God speaks to us in the liturgy through our senses. FRANCIS HOUSE: Sandwiches, individually wrapped & put back in labeled bread bags as to what kind, plus hard boiled eggs please deliver to the Parish Center on Wednesdays by 9:00am. Our dedicated Volunteers deliver every week. Other needs include clean men s clothing such as jeans, t- shirts, sweatshirts and shoes. Our homeless neighbors are located right beneath the Magnolia Bridge on 15 th and it gets windy and chilly there. FOOD BANK: Non-perishable food items can be placed in the large wooden box in the parish center. No expired food items please. CATHEDRAL KITCHEN: We accept clean plastic food containers with lids from butter, yogurt, etc.
