Contact us by office@stjohnthebaptistchurch.org Our Vision and Mission Statement guides our pastoral planning... Established in 1922, the parish family of St. John the Baptist Church welcomes and invites all people to our community, especially those in need. Guided by the Holy Spirit we are sustained by the Sunday Eucharist, the Word of God, and the Sacraments. All are encouraged to share their time, talent and treasure as we grow in love through our Catholic faith and the life, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Page 3 Bulletin Series Paul Turner Understanding the Mass 12. Bringing up the Gifts At the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the bread, wine and offerings for the church and the poor are brought to the altar. Sometimes the bread and wine are placed on the credence table before Mass. In this case, a minister brings them to the altar at the preparation of the gifts. More commonly the bread and wine are placed near the door of the church before Mass. They may be brought up in procession to the altar. The procession should include just these primary symbols. It is permissible to carry up the water in the procession, but ideally it is already in place before Mass together with the bowl, towel, and chalice. The procession of the gifts is not a setting of the credence table. It begins the preparation of the offerings for Mass. Similarly, symbolic tokens that will be retrieved and put back into use after Mass should not be brought up in procession. Textbooks, sports paraphernalia, and hobbies, for example, might be arranged to catch the eye upon entering the church for a school Mass, but they are not the gifts of the Eucharist. Gifts are brought up in procession by the faithful, who hand them to the priest or deacon (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 73). After handing them over, some people make the sign of the cross, genuflect, bow or do none of the above. The GIRM gives no instructions about what to do. The Ceremonial of Bishops says, A deep bow is made to the altar by all who enter the sanctuary (chancel), leave it, or pass before the altar (72). It would be most appropriate if those who bring up the gifts made a profound bow to the altar just before returning to their places. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Frank updated the Council on the current steps in the Pastoral Plan. We are ready to introduce Special Needs Faith Formation and will have an Information Night for parents. The Diocesan Office of Faith Formation is directing parishes to implement, Think First and Stay Safe, training and awareness of boundaries and safety issues for young children and their parents. This winter Jane Oliva will add this component to faith formation sessions. Hospitality will begin on December 2 nd and continue on the first weekend of the month. Baptism Ministry is being expanded with the new volunteers from the Celebration of Ministries. The new signage is being reviewed by the Town of Riverhead at the Board of Appeals. Renewing the Church Interior: The Council discussed the possibility of renewing the church interior in stages. This will give parishioners an opportunity to learn why the changes are being made, and how they might affect the liturgy. The Worship Committee will be discussing this further and be especially attentive to the importance of education of the parish. Follow up from Last Month: and preparing for our 100 th Anniversary: brainstorming: The Council members continued sharing ideas about the Parish Centennial year. We want to involve as many people as possible, share the ideas that are surfacing from the Council, and seek other ideas and reactions. Of particular importance is Renewal of the parish, and the opportunity to deepen our prayer and spiritual practices. It will be helpful to find a theme for the Jubilee Year. Our patron, St. John the Baptist, can be an inspiration. Next month Father Frank will make a brief presentation to the Council about the biblical Year of Grace for jubilees, and also gather scriptural references to St John the Baptist. Roundtable: Council members talked about a variety of issues. Heat in the church: some felt it was too hot, some felt it was too cold. Mass attendance: on the weekends when a grade level comes to Mass it adds to the joy of the Mass. RCIA: This year we have a larger group than usual who are seeking to become Catholic (at the Easter Vigil). Next meeting: December 12 th Prayer will be Rich Rossin

December 7, 8 and 9, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. We have many religious items as well as furniture (desks, tables, bookshelves, dressers, end tables, chairs, etc.) housewares, jewelry, lamps, kitchen items, ovens, refrigerators (various sizes), washer & dryer, linens, crystal, holiday items, patio set, paintings, etc. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call ( x 2060), St. Ursula Center, 186 Middle Rd, Blue Point, NY Have You Been Asked to Be a Sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation? We receive many requests regarding being a sponsor or godparent for Baptism and Confirmation. 1. The sponsor must be a full member of the Catholic Church through Baptism and Confirmation and Eucharist and at least 16 years old (the responsibilities of this ministry are undertaken by an adult). Sponsor (godparent) is a sacramental ministry. The sponsor takes part in the ritual as a Catholic and provides example from her/his life through living and acting as a full member of the Catholic Church. Because of the seriousness of this ministry, the Church has the following requirements: 2. The sponsor must be a Catholic living an active life in the Church who provides good example. Someone married outside the Church is not able to receive Communion and is not able to be a sponsor. Also, a Catholic who has left the Church is not able to be a sponsor of a new member into the Church. 3. When there are two sponsors, they are spiritual parents and are godfather and godmother. We are always ready to answer your questions. Please call the parish center!
