Ecumenically, it means that the Latin Rite now reflects the wealth of the East in having more than one prayer available to the Church. Pastorally, it actually acknowledges the place of the assembly in prayer, which is particularly clear in the Masses with Children. In fact, the traditional prayers of the Eastern Church served as models for our new prayers. In the East, what we call the Eucharistic Prayer is called the anaphora, and there are three main families of anaphora. Each family has a different recipe for arranging the usual parts of these prayers. All anaphora have intercessions included, but the Churches of Antioch place them toward the end of the prayer, Alexandria prefers them at the beginning before the Holy, Holy, and Syria puts them at the very end. One branch of the Syrian family is unique in not mentioning the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. The Roman Canon we once prayed exclusively has some connection with the Alexandrian family, but once the signal for creativity was given, all the wealth of every prayer tradition was on the table, and our Sunday Mass has been greatly enriched. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LITURGUCAL MINISTERS: Please turn in your special requests for the September - November scheduling period by Monday, August 7 th. Special Request Forms can be found in the St. Joseph s room or you can fill out the form online at: olqpgrafton.org/em-request-form. SENIORS BUSTRIP: The Seniors will be taking a bus trip to Wellington Park on Thursday, August 10 th. They will take a tram ride around the park and have lunch afterwards at the Elks. The bus will leave the church hall parking lot at 10:00am Sympathy to the family of Dorothy Buzas who was buried last week. May she rest in the peace of Christ.

2 The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PASTOR S CORNER: The Parish Council met earlier this month to brainstorm and establish goals for the parish for the next several years. This comes after spending the year reading and reflecting upon the book Great Catholic Parishes by William E. Simon Jr. (The previous 2 years Rebuilt and Tools for Rebuilding by Michael White and Tom Corcoran were read). The book lists four essential practices that great parishes have in common: 1. Great Parishes Share Leadership 2. Great Parishes Foster Spiritual Maturity and Plan for Discipleship 3. Great Parishes Excel on Sundays 4. Great Parishes Evangelize Through prayer and reflection and with the help of Mr. David DeLambo of DeLambo Consulting and formerly of the Pastoral Planning Office of the Diocese of Cleveland, the council narrowed the goals down to two primary ones: 1. Minister to Families with Young Children 2. Increase Ministry Participation and Volunteerism They also identified 3 secondary goals: 1. Foster Community and Personal Relationships within the parish 2. Start Parish Renewal Programs for women, men and families 3. Start Bereavement Ministry At the September Meeting the council will work on action steps for each of these goals. If you have any suggestions or would like to become more involved in the activities that these goals will generate, please contact a Parish Council member whose names are listed on the cover of the bulletin. As you can see there are some exciting goals for the future of the parish, and with everyone s support and prayer we can make them possible to ensure that our parish remains a great parish. I hope to see everyone at the festival and as I wrote in last week s column it is through revenues generated at the festival that we can take care of the capital improvement projects without having to sacrifice our parish ministries and activities such as these goals will generate. Fr. John SYNOD: The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. In preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful. Consequently, the Diocese of Cleveland has made available a survey questionnaire to gather information on the current state of the young in our diocese that will be included as part of the presynod discernment document. The survey can be found on the diocesan website home page, All are invited and encouraged to participate by taking this short survey. The bishops of the United States pray that the results of this survey will help them more fully understand the experience of young people in our Church and in our country -- their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles -- so that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and direction to our ministry with young people. INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? If you know someone who may be interested in becoming Catholic now would be a good time to give them that nudge that they may need. It is a good time during these next few months to help them to come in touch with the call of God in their lives and to direct them to myself, Grace Ogonek, Sally Logar, Chuck Rink, Sandy Kinter, Lynda Kestner or Pat Whitman. We would be more than happy to sit down with them to answer questions and ease anxieties. The RCIA process for those seeking to become Catholic will begin in September. Also if you are interested in being on the team that journeys with the candidates to the Easter sacraments please let us know. It is so rewarding sharing ones faith and being nurtured by those seeking a deeper relationship with God through participation in the Catholic Church. COMPASSION If you love the justice of Jesus Christ more than you fear human judgment, then you will seek to do compassion. Mechtilde of Magdeburg
