PASTOR S CORNER: As we enter into the holiest of weeks I offer two questions from Pope Francis for your reflection. Pope Francis, on Palm Sunday 2014, had listened to the Gospel account of how Jesus disciples had fallen asleep just before he was betrayed by Judas. He ignored his prepared homily and invited the people, including himself, to look into their hearts. In his reflection he asked these two questions Has my life fallen asleep? Am I like Pontius Pilate, who, when he sees the situation is difficult, washes my hands? Take these two questions with you throughout each day of this week. In your family interactions, your work, your studies, your interactions with others, how do you answer these questions? In light of the Sacred Triduum liturgies this week, how do you answer these questions? Set aside what you can this week to make this Holy Week the most fruitful experience of God s grace that you have ever had! Be prepared to experience life in a more meaningful and deeper way! May you have a blessed week! KEEP OUR CANDIDATES IN PRAYER: Bookmarks were distributed a few weeks ago with the names of those preparing for the initiation sacraments at the Easter Vigil as well as on April 28 th and May 1 st. Please keep these candidates in prayer as they prepare for these sacraments. RICE BOWLS: Rice bowls may be returned in the baskets by the Baptismal Font at any of the Holy Week Liturgies. PREPARING THE CHURCH: Help is needed to prepare the church for the celebration of Easter. We will begin decorating the church after the 3:00pm Passion service on Good Friday. With each reading and responsorial a candle is extinguished until there is only the paschal candle remaining lit. The paschal candle is removed symbolizing the moment of Christ s death. The paschal candle returns into the darkened church symbolizing Christ s victory over death. MORNING PRAYER Join us for Morning Prayer on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday at 9:00am in the Chapel. This prayer of the church helps us to remember the call to remain in prayer throughout these sacred days of the Triduum. HOLY THURSDAY Mass of the Lord s Supper The Mass begins on a jubilant note as the Gloria is sung for the first time since Lent began. The gospel account of Jesus washing the disciple s feet at the Last Supper is proclaimed from the Gospel of John followed by our washing one another s feet. There will be four stations and if you wish you can go to any one of these and wash the feet of the person at that station and then have your feet washed. During the Preparation of the Gifts, the oils that were blessed by the Bishop at the Chrism Mass on Tuesday will be presented. These oils (Oil of the Catechumens, Oil of the Sick, and Chrism) will be used throughout the coming year during the celebrations of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick. Extra hosts are consecrated this evening for the next day as it is the only day of the year when there is no Mass celebrated throughout the world. After communion, the consecrated hosts are carried to a place of reservation away from the main sanctuary and tabernacle. We will be processing with the Blessed Sacrament to the Chapel where an altar of repose has been set up where people can pray silently until Night Prayer. There is no conclusion (blessing or dismissal) at this liturgy. GOOD FRIDAY The Good Friday liturgy has no formal entrance procession or greeting as it is a continuous liturgy from the Mass of the Lord s Supper the previous night which had no conclusion. Everyone kneels as the preside lays prostrate in the sanctuary as a sign of abandonment to God. The Liturgy of the Word follows with the passion account taken from the Gospel of John (recall that it was Mark s version that was used on Palm Sunday). The veneration of the cross takes place where everyone is invited to come forward to venerate the cross. This can take various forms such as kissing the cross, genuflecting or bowing to the cross, tracing the sign of the cross on the cross and then on oneself. Communion is distributed from hosts that were consecrated the previous evening. There is no dismissal or blessing and everyone leaves the church in silence. The collection for the Holy Land will be taken as you leave the church by the ushers. HOLY SATURDAY This day of preparation includes Morning Prayer as in the previous two days as well as a food blessing. The food blessing is a blessing of the food that has been prepared or will be used in the Easter feasts in the home. EASTER VIGIL - This liturgy must begin after sundown in the darkness of night. We will gather outside for the lighting of the Easter fire, symbolizing the Light of Christ that has overcome death and sin. Processing into the church, we will hear from the Scriptures the accounts of God s interaction with his people and our salvation through the death and resurrection of his son. The Liturgy of Initiation then follows with 7 Professions of Faith. The excitement of new fire, new water, new oil, new Eucharist and new members of the Body of Christ is a unique and transformative experience. EASTER SUNDAY We continue the celebration of the night before with the loud shouts of praise to God. We gather to celebrate the resurrection and to recommit ourselves through our renewal of baptismal promises to live as disciples of the Risen Christ. INDIVIDUAL CELEBRATIONS OF THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Monday, March 21 st, 7:30pm - After Mass There are no Confessions on Holy Saturday

3 Our Lady Queen of Peace Page 4 Thank you for your generous support of our Parish, and your help with the needs of the community through your ongoing participation in our various ministries. Due to the Easter Holiday bulletin deadlines, the March 20 th financials will appear in the Easter Sunday bulletin. The Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday financials will appear in the April 3 rd bulletin. ALMOST HERE! Saturday is the Easter Vigil and anticipation is growing when David Gregory, Sarah Gregory, Todd Hodkey, Julie Webber, Gregory Rowe, Makenna Rowe and Quinn Rowe will be received into the Catholic Church by making a Profession of Faith. David Gregory, Sarah Gregory, Todd Hodkey, Julie Webber, and Gregory Rowe will then receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and then all will receive Holy Communion for the first time. Please keep them in your prayers. FAST & ABSTINENCE: Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18 th year and have not yet reached their 60 th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have reached their 14 th year. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the paschal fast to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection. GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION: Pope Francis has asked our parish to support Christians in the Holy Land. Through the Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world to stand in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace in a troubled land. In these challenging times in the Middle East, your support means that our church will conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build housing for Christians, maintain shrines and operate refugee centers in the Holy Land. Christians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate your prayers and financial help! The political, religious and military challenges in the Holy Land are more complex than ever. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. Our parish will support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection, as requested by Pope Francis. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy Land. PLEASE BE GENEROUS! For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit Sister Kathleen s Corner Family and Parish Faith Formation Reflection on Palm Sunday: Lord, I'm so familiar with this Last Supper story, but today I want to especially listen so that I'm more deeply grateful at this Eucharist, and can say at a deeper level, "It is right to give him thanks and praise. Let me feel deep gratitude as I hear the story again. You are giving us your body and blood as food for our journey, even today at this Mass. This garden scene moves me. You really did wrestle with this surrender, didn't you, Lord. Thank you so much for saying "yes," for me. The betrayal by Judas is horrible until I remember the many times I betrayed you, while still trying to do what I thought was "good" by some definition. Peter's denial must have stung you, Lord, even though you knew it would happen. It stings me as I think of the times and ways I've refused to stand up as yours. Simon carried your cross. Let me carry your cross without grumbling. I so want to learn this. I love that you stopped to be with the women, grieving along the way. In one simple sentence the story says they crucified you. They nailed your wrists and feet to a cross and hoisted you up to hang there until you could no longer breathe. Jesus, how could you have said, Father, forgive them, they know not what they do? How? Oh, how I want to ask you, beg you, to make my heart like yours. Mercy from the cross! Mercy, as you are unjustly condemned, by religious fanatics, mercy that challenges the hardness in my heart for everyone that I regard as a sinner, for everyone who drives me crazy, everyone that I judge as not very good. Make my heart like yours. Please let me desire that communion with you more than anything else that crowds my complicated heart! In the end you teach me how to surrender: Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. Let me put my life in your/our Father's hands, Lord, Jesus. Every day. Throughout my day. Even while hanging on the crosses I have to face. Creighton.edu
