Remember, before the reform of our prayer in the late 1960s, the priest whispered the words of the Roman Canon, Eucharistic Prayer I. His voice was not amplified, his back was to the people, who could only tell what was going on by a shift in his posture as he bowed and genuflected and as bells were rung to indicate his progress through the prayer. With the emergence of the new prayers, some feared that the old prayer would be lost forever if it weren t somehow changed. The reformers asked that it be streamlined a bit by omitting the repeated Through Christ at the end of various intercessions, and trimming the list of somewhat obscure saints. The new edition therefore brackets parts of the two lists of saints in the prayer, unfortunately dropping all the women from the second set. The decision was also made to keep the Lord s words at the consecration exactly the same in every Eucharistic Prayer, although there is precedent for more variety. On November 2, 1968, Pope Paul VI signed off on the plan of the new Mass, and by April 1969, the publication of the revised order of Mass was announced. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. FORGIVE OTHERS There are many kinds of alms the giving of which helps us to obtain pardon for our sins; but none is greater than that by which we forgive from our heart a sin that someone has committed against us. St. Augustine SPOT LIGHT: Our spotlight ministry this weekend will be the Music Ministry. They will have an informational display setup in the Gathering area. Stop by and see how this ministry celebrates the mass with music and song. If you are interested they are always looking for new members. Next weekend we will feature our Our Lady s Guild.

If we do not purposefully look for the blessings, we end up taking them for granted and running after every whim that flashes before us.

Although the program is designed to prepare children for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, basic teachings of the Catholic faith are presented in simple and relatable ways.

2 The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary PASTOR S CORNER: We are blessed! God has blessed us in so many ways that if we are attentive we are overwhelmed by the goodness of God in our lives. The key word however is attentive. There is so much that is vying for our attention at any given moment that it takes a concentrated effort to recognize what God is doing and providing for us. If we do not purposefully look for the blessings, we end up taking them for granted and running after every whim that flashes before us. This year our Grade Level Faith Formation program will be focusing upon how we are blessed. All of the grades from second through eighth will be using the same book Blessed by Dynamic Catholic. Although the program is designed to prepare children for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, basic teachings of the Catholic faith are presented in simple and relatable ways. This is a way of helping our youth to develop a greater appreciation of the basics of our Catholic faith. Throughout the program they will come to see how the practice of the Catholic faith helps them to grow in relationship with God and to be attentive to the blessings of God in their lives. We will be tying in this theme of being blessed in all that we do as a parish community. Parents will be encouraged to work along with their children in the weekly lessons. In the parish we will also be looking at ways that we can grow in our attentiveness of what God is doing in our lives. In the opening section of the book Blessed we read: Jewish rabbis encourage their people to count their blessings each day and see if they can get to one hundred. (p. 6). Do you think you could come up with 100 blessings today? Who has the time to count that high you ask? What if you were to break up the day and pause each hour to count the blessings of the hour? What if around the dinner table or during a T.V. commercial you were to ask each member of the family what they are grateful for from the day? There are many ways to incorporate the counting of your blessings in the day. The important part is to purposefully look for the blessings. And in counting the blessings to give thanks! On this Catechetical Sunday we acknowledge those who are giving of their time and talent to teach the faith and at the same time to grow in their faith. They are a blessing. God has put them into our lives and we are grateful that they responded to being an instrument of God s presence. The names of our catechists are listed in the bulletin this week. Please say a prayer for them, give thanks for the blessing they are for us, and when you see them to personally thank them for offering their time and sharing their faith in our parish community. Fr. John Gratitude reminds us of what matters most and what matters least, and fills us with resolve to carry on the great mission of God. - Matthew Kelly Resisting Happiness IT IS NOT TOO LATE: The sessions for RCIA began this past Wednesday, but it is not too late to join us. We meet every Wednesday from September until May for about an hour and a half. There are no tests although you will find your beliefs tested at times. Reception into the Church takes place at the Easter Vigil which is March 31 st this year. For those who have never been baptized they are baptized during the Vigil mass. For those who have been baptized in another Christian church they are not baptized again but rather they make a Profession of Faith and then together with the newly baptized are Confirmed and receive Holy Communion. These classes are open to anyone interested in learning more about the Catholic Church with the interest in joining the Church. There is no commitment until the middle of November when candidates are presented at mass on the weekend to the community and together with the community journeys through prayer and support to the Easter sacraments. The RCIA sessions consist of topics regarding Scripture, Sacraments, and Discipleship and are presented in the context of faith sharing rather than an academic class structure. EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: The diocesan training for those interested in being commissioned to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass and to the sick will be taking place soon. Those seeking to become Eucharistic Ministers need to attend a diocesan training session as well as an orientation session in the parish. CLAMBAKE: The Holy Name Society is hosting a Clambake on Saturday, September 30 th starting at 5:30pm on the patio. In case of inclement weather, the even will be moved inside to the parish hall. We have limited the event to 100 tickets. Cost for the bake is $25 and $6 for an extra bag of clams. Beer, Wine Coolers, Pop & Water will be for sale. Tickets are on sale after all masses through September 24. Please call the office for more information or if you would like to purchase tickets. CEMETERY CLEAN UP: Bring your shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and gloves as we prepare the cemetery for the winter. We will be leveling graves, cleaning debris, and some minor landscaping chores. So join us on Saturday, September 23 rd at 9:00 am for a morning work party. BLOOD DRIVE: The Life Share Bloodmobile will be at Our Lady Queen of Peace Hall on Sunday, October 1, 2017 to receive your donation to save the lives of others.
