Fifth Sunday in Lent Pastor s Corner: This is the third week now that we hear the great stories of faith from the Gospel of John.

Yes, they are long Gospel stories but they are filled with much symbolism and implications for personal reflection.

This week we hear the call to come forth from the tombs that enslave us in life. As Pope Francis put it: Jesus calls us as he called to Lazarus in his tomb: come forth!

2 Fifth Sunday in Lent Pastor s Corner: This is the third week now that we hear the great stories of faith from the Gospel of John. These stories invite us to reflect upon the call to grow in our baptismal faith and they recognize and place our faith in Jesus. Yes, they are long Gospel stories but they are filled with much symbolism and implications for personal reflection. I would suggest that you go back to these stories throughout the week, as each time you read them there is something hidden that comes to light. This week we hear the call to come forth from the tombs that enslave us in life. As Pope Francis put it: Jesus calls us as he called to Lazarus in his tomb: come forth! This call is addressed to every human person because we are all marked by death. Christ is not resigned to the sepulchers that we have constructed with our choices of evil and death, with our mistakes, our sins. Jesus invites us, almost orders us, to come out of the tombs into which our sins have plunged us. This is where our resurrection begins: when we decide to obey the command of Jesus to come into the light, to life; when the masks fall from our faces and we rediscover the courage of our original faces, created in the image and likeness of God. the raising of Lazarus shows us that there is no limit to the divine mercy, which is offered to everyone. The Lord is always ready to roll away the tombstone of our sins, which separate us from him, the light of the living. This video series by Bishop Robert Barron looks at the role of David in 1 st and 2 nd Samuel as the new Adam and foreshadowing Christ the King. NEXT SUNDAY: The 11:00am Mass next Sunday, Palm Sunday, will include the blessing of palms and procession from the water feature outside the front doors of the church into the church for Mass. Please meet at the water feature at 10:55am. PALM SUNDAY AND SYMBOLISM: Why are you carrying around tree branches? Sometimes, one of the hardest things to explain as a Catholic is our attachment to symbolism. Palm Sunday is a great example of that. We come home from Mass holding palm branches, and we tuck them behind a crucifix or next to the picture of the Last Supper. To anyone who does not know our faith, it looks as though we stuck a few weeds on the wall imagine their questions! The truth behind this tradition, however, goes to the story of Palm Sunday, when the people heard that Christ was coming and they took out palm branches and went out to meet him, and cried out Hosanna! Blessed is the he who comes in the name of the Lord, (even) the king of Israel. (John 12:13). It was a tradition to spread palms before a king as he processed into his city. It was a way to welcome him, to show him glory and homage. Thus, Christ, the true King, was welcomed into Jerusalem. This fulfilled the prophecy in the Old Testament, which declared, Behold: your king is coming to you, a just savior is he, humble and riding on a donkey (Zech. 9:9). It revealed that Christ was a great king, but also a humble king. The people greeted him with wild joy and cheers of Hosanna. But one short week later, they crucified him. We celebrate this feast and carry palm branches home with us to commemorate the great humility of Our Lord, who loved us so much that he chose the cross for our salvation. A few years back Pope Francis called for the naming of St. Joseph in addition to Mary, Mother of God in the Eucharistic Prayers. Joseph was the foster father of Jesus. We know that Joseph was a righteous man who protected Mary from disgrace after she was found pregnant with Jesus. Like the earlier Joseph in Genesis, he received instructions from God through dreams. The Gospel gives little information about him, save that he was an artisan who lived in Nazareth, was a descendant of David, and went to Bethlehem for a census, causing Jesus to be born there in fulfillment of the prophecies. Because he was a man who worked with his hands he is the patron of workers and especially carpenters. Devotions to St. Joseph developed rather late, and was popularized by St. Bernadine of Siena during the fifteenth century. This production is now in its 21 st year and is made up of a cast of dedicated high school students from Elyria Catholic. Every year, this group travels all over the western part of the Diocese of Cleveland to present this prayer experience. See the bulletin board in the Gathering Area for event places and times. LITURGICAL MINISTERS: Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers and Servers are needed for Tenebrae, Holy Thursday and Good Friday. You may sign-up after Mass in the St. Joseph s room or call the parish office during the week. STEWARDSHIP CORNER: Stewardship is living a life of gratitude, taking the time every day to recognize the gifts that God has given and to be grateful for them. Everyone has been gifted with unique skills and talents. God's plan is that we strive to share our own talents and that we encourage, welcome others to also use their talents to carry out the mission and ministry of the Church. This week become more aware of your own special skills and talents. How can you share your gifts with our parish community? GLFF NEWS: Thank you to all who attended our family class last week. Make sure that you continue to bring your bags and journals to Mass with you. Getting involved in various Mass ministries is a great way to understand the Mass better and to make your family's weekly attendance at Mass more meaningful. Each month a special Family Mass celebration will be scheduled, and family's are invited to signup to participate in Mass ministries together. Our next Family Mass will be April 15 th at 11:00am. Join them for their final fry on March 23 rd from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. Lake Perch, shrimp, pierogi s, fries, coleslaw, applesauce, macaroni and cheese, and homemade pies are available. Dinners start at $11, Seniors $10. Take outs available. SPOT LIGHT: This weekend our spotlight is Our Lady s Guild. The Guild is an organization that works to help support many of the events and purchases need for the church. They meet once a month on the third Monday of the month at 7:00pm in the parish hall. Please stop by their table to see if you would like to become of member of this very giving organization. A NIGHT OUT ON THE LANES: Join us for a fun night out on the lanes sponsored by the Holy Name Society Friday, April 20 th at Grafton Bowling Center. Bowling starts at 7:00pm with registration at 6:15pm. $25 per person includes 3 games of bowling, shoe rental, food, drink ticket and prizes. Sign up after mass in the gathering area or call Bill Slisko( ) or Max Jalowiec( ). EASTER EGG HUNT: Will take place on Sunday, March 25 th for those children ages 2-9 after the 11:00am mass. Rumor has it that the Easter Bunny will be making a special appearance. Please bring something to gather your eggs in. If the weather is inclement we will hold the hunt in the parish hall.
