TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Once the way was cleared for additional Eucharistic Prayers, those who were appointed to compose them had to look deep within the tradition for sources. One of the prescriptions for new prayers was that they be unencumbered by useless repetition. From the start, therefore, the writers knew that the old Roman Canon, which had the priest bowing and crossing himself many times in a long, complex prayer, was not a model of simplicity. Aside from the prayers treasured by Eastern Christians, there is an obvious model from ancient Rome. For about a hundred years now, the historical text Apostolic Tradition has shed some light for us on the shadowy shape of worship in the early church. In it, its author, Hippolytus, took care to record the actual texts of worship used at the time. He himself has a shadow side, since he was so ardently conservative in his tastes that he broke ties with the Bishop of Rome and became first in the line of history s anti-popes. At the eleventh hour, however, he reconciled with his enemies and actually died a martyr. In fact, he was shipped off to the Sardinian mines as a slave with the true pope as his companion in chains. Because his tussle with the pope was over theological innovations and not liturgical texts, we are sure that his account of the style of Eucharistic Prayer in the third century is accurate. 2 The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary PASTOR S CORNER: Yes, it is that time of year for me to once again repeat what I say year after year. But it is so true and once again last year proved it by those who went through the RCIA process. Some truly amazing things take place in the RCIA process for both those seeking to become Catholic as well as for the team that is preparing the candidates. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the program that walks with those preparing to enter the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist which are then celebrated at the Easter Vigil. For the first few classes those who are interested come with a mixture of anxiety, fear, excitement and questions. To walk into the parish hall for the first time for these classes, with the uncertainty of what to expect can be unsettling. It is for this reason that we encourage friends or family members to join those interested in becoming Catholic to walk in together for the first class. And the candidates will need a sponsor, which is usually a family member or friend and they are most welcome to come right from the beginning. As time goes on these candidates for the sacraments become more settled and the uniqueness of their lives, their giftedness, and God s call in their lives begins to emerge. This is where I am amazed. Everyone comes for different reasons with different backgrounds. Sometimes it is because of a spouse or fiancé who is Catholic and they wish to share the same religious faith. There have also been individuals who have had no family members who are Catholic but have searched other religions and found that they are called to the Catholic Church. And still others, who have had friends who have been such a powerful witness in their lives, that they wish to find out what it is that makes them who they are and so seek to learn more about the Catholic Church. For whatever reason it is that initially brought them to the class, as the year progresses, it becomes more and more obvious to everyone that it is God who is calling them to a deeper relationship through worship in the Catholic Church. The sessions for RCIA begin Wednesday, September 6 th at 7:00pm in the parish hall. We meet every Wednesday from September until May for about an hour and a half. There are no tests although you will find your beliefs tested at times. Reception into the Church takes place at the Easter Vigil which is March 31 st this year. For those who have never been baptized, they are baptized during the Vigil mass. For those who have been baptized in another Christian church, they are not baptized again but rather they make a Profession of Faith and then together with the newly baptized are Confirmed and receive Holy Communion. These classes are open to anyone interested in learning more about the Catholic Church with the interest in joining the Church. There is no commitment until the middle of November when candidates are presented at mass on the weekend to the community and together with the community journeys through prayer and support to the Easter sacraments. The RCIA sessions consist of topics regarding Scripture, Sacraments, and Discipleship and are presented in the context of faith sharing rather than an academic class structure. John EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: The diocesan training for those interested in being commissioned to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass and to the sick will be taking place soon. Those seeking to become Eucharistic Ministers need to attend a diocesan training session as well as an orientation session in the parish. The options for training sessions close by are: Sunday, October 8 St. Peter Parish, Center Ridge Rd. N. Ridgeville; 2:00-4:30pm Sunday, October 22 St. Martin of Tours Parish 1800 Station Rd. Valley City; 2:00-4:30pm LITURGY/ART&ENVIRONMENT MEETING: The Liturgy Committee will be meeting Monday, August 28 th at 7:00pm in the parish hall. We will be planning the calendar of liturgical events for the year as well as planning the specific prayer experiences for the next two months. If you have suggestions, ideas or would like to learn more about the liturgy please join us at this meeting. The Art & Environment Committee meets at 8:00pm to discuss ways to create the environment for the prayer experiences planned as well as the seasons of the liturgical year. SCRIPTURE STUDY: Our scripture study of Women in the Old Testament is very exciting and will cover lesson five (pg ) & pg in the study guide, on Thursday August 24 th at 7:00pm in Room 2 in the Hall. All are welcome to take part or just come and listen. We encourage all to think about enriching their faith, by joining our group. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN: The Diocese of Cleveland s Protecting God s Children program is a continuing effort to instruct and inform everyone about the protection of children from sexual abuse. To report any past or present suspected inappropriate behavior toward children by priests, deacons, religious lay ecclesial ministers, or personnel associated with the Church, please contact the Diocesan Response Service office at or via at response_services@dioceseofcleveland.org. You are also asked to immediately inform local authorities about inappropriate behavior. RETROUVAILLE WEEKEND: September 8-10, A Lifeline for Troubled Marriages Has your marriage become unloving or uncaring your relationship cold, distant thinking about a separation or divorce? Are you already separated/ divorced but both of you want to try again? Then the Retrouvaille program may help. RETROUVAILLE (rediscovery), which is supported by the Catholic diocese of Cleveland, but open to couples of all faiths, consists of a weekend experience for couples and six follow up sessions. A registration fee of $150 is required to confirm your reservation. They will have an informational display setup in the Gathering area. Stop by and see how this ministry teaches our children about their faith and prepares them for the sacraments. FIRST STEP PROGRAM: Attempting to pick up the pieces of one s life after the tragedy of divorce is an area that can impact a person s relationship with God and the Church. One of the significant issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the Church still care about me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do? The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland offers its First Step Program to help individuals deal with these questions in order to renew and/or strengthen their relationship with God and the Church. This program is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching regarding marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Representatives from the Ministry to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will also be present to explain the resources they offer to the divorced. Everyone is welcome to: Deepen knowledge of the Church s teaching on marriage Learn about the Church s ministry to the divorced/separated in the Diocese Hear about the annulment process and how to submit a case Discover a path to healing after divorce in order to strengthen and/or renew a relationship with God and the Church In any endeavor, taking the first step is always the most difficult. Mr. Dean Fazekas MSSA, CSAT, LISW-S In recent years, largely through the pioneering work of Dr. Patrick Carnes within the secular community and Dr. Peter Kleponis within the Christian community, attention has been drawn to the often scoffed problem of sexual addiction. Manifested in pornography, it is the subject of a pastoral letter of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. This talk will discuss what is meant by sexual addiction and will examine ways to determine if you, or a loved one, has a sexual addiction. If you are a partner of an individual with a sex addiction there is help and support available to you. Please call to make your reservations. There will be two (2) winners drawn in the raffle and each winner will be able to invite three (3) friends to share a VIP table which will include: chilled table-side champagne, special swag bags, and other fabulous items to complete the VIP experience. Tickets are $10 each and will be available for purchase after masses on the weekends of 8/19 and 8/26. The two (2) winners will be chosen after 11:00am Mass on Sunday, August 27 th. Note: these raffle tickets are only for a chance at the VIP experience. Anyone who buys a raffle ticket for the VIP table and does not win, must buy a $35 ticket to the event. Actual tickets for the November 11 th event will go on sale starting after 11:00am Mass on September 10 th and the following weekend of September 16 th /17 th or until sold out.
