TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to assure the vigor of their faith s intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in Rev. 2 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE PASTORS CORNER: Next weekend, marks the end of the liturgical year and the end of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. In announcing the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis had explained that we need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is the wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Misericordiae Vultus (The Face of Mercy) par. 2. Throughout this past liturgical year we have been hearing from the Gospel of Luke which is often referred to as the Gospel of Mercy. Jesus has been revealed to us through this gospel as the face of mercy which is the face of the Father s mercy. As we reflect upon the mercy of God we come to appreciate in a deeper way the mercy of God that has been shown us. Having experienced mercy we then show mercy through our words and actions to others. In coming to the end of this Jubilee Year I invite you to spend this week reflecting upon how you have grown in your awareness of God s mercy and how you have been stretched to show mercy to others. Below are listed the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy to use in your reflection on how you have shown mercy. Fr. John CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Visit the sick Shelter the homeless Visit the imprisoned Bury the dead SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY Admonish the sinner Instruct the ignorant Counsel the doubtful Comfort the sorrowful Bear wrongs patiently Forgive all injuries Pray for the living and the dead NOVEMBER MASSES: Until the First Sunday of Advent, November 27 th, we will be remembering at all the Masses those who are listed in the parish Book of the Dead. There will be an opportunity to add the names of your loved ones who have died to the book during the month. CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: Next week s collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help. CCHD was founded to break the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding organizations that help individuals help themselves. With a tradition of improving education, housing situations, and community economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact in communities nationwide. Your contribution will defend human dignity and reach out to those living on the margins. Please give to the CCHDS Collection. THANKSGIVING MASS: The Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 9:00am in the church. You are invited to bring a non-perishable food item or monetary donation for our Helping Hands food pantry. During the regular offertory time, you will be invited to bring your items to the steps of the altar. As you do so it will be a clearer sign of you offering your gifts, as well as the offering of your entire self to God who has blessed you. LITURGICAL MINISTERS: A sign-up sheet for the Thanksgiving Mass is in the St. Joseph s room. END OF CHURCH YEAR: Next Sunday marks the last Sunday of the Church s liturgical year. It is the Thirty-Fourth or Last Sunday in Ordinary Time. Its official name is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. This solemnity was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, an observance celebrating as aspect of Jesus identity rather than of his life. Conventional understanding of kingship and power are transformed. Rather than calling up images of Jesus Christ dressed in kingly robes, the Gospel proclaims him as king by the sign over his head on the throne of a wooden cross (I.N.R.I. Iesus nazarenus rex Iudaeorum Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews). Paradoxically, it is the thief who recognized in Christ the Lord and Messiah Sourcebook, Liturgical Publications p.320.

GIVING TUESDAY: In the Spirit of Thanksgiving You can participate in Giving Tuesday You have heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday now you can share your blessings on Tuesday, 29 November Giving Tuesday. All day around the globe people are asked to contribute to their favorite charities and nonprofits. For the first time ever, the Diocese of Cleveland will launch #wegivecatholic, which allows you to contribute to Our Lady Queen of Peace and over 140 other Catholic schools, parishes, Catholic Charities programs and sites, ministries and other Catholic nonprofits in Northeast Ohio. Simply use your computer or smartphone on Tuesday, 29 November to access pull down the list of participants and donate to your favorites. In the spirit of the season, remember to Give Catholic on Giving Tuesday. There will also be a link on our website. OUR LADY S GUILD: The next Lady s Guild meeting will be Monday, November 21 st at 7:00pm in the church hall. We will be planning our Christmas dinner and party. We will start collecting donations for Haven House and Life Care. Life Care needs small donations for their Bingo store like notecards, birthday cards, stamps, small snacks, gum, hand lotions, chapsticks, magazines, puzzle books, etc. Haven House needs clothing for men, women, and children, food items, paper products, or household items. Anyone wishing to donate to these worthy causes can drop off items in the Gathering Area and the Guild will see to distributing them. All women of the Parish are welcome to attend our meetings. Hope to see you there! POPE FRANCIS in THE JOY OF LOVE : For those who have lost a loved one, Pope Francis encourages us in saying The Preface of the Liturgy of the Dead puts it nicely: Although the certainty of death saddens us, we are consoled by the promise of future immortality. For the life of those who believe in you, Lord, is not ended but changed. SOCIAL MEDIA: Don t forget! MASS COORDINATIORS: There will be a training session for anyone interested in becoming a Mass Coordinator on Thursday, November 17 th at 6:30pm in the church. Being a Mass Coordinator is a very integral part of the celebration of the mass. Please reflect upon this request as we are in need of Mass Coordinators for all masses. FAMILY PROMISE REQUEST: A family is in need for a gently used car so they can get back and forth to work, if you can donate Please contact FIGHTING PORN ADDICTION: While few people are talking about it, the reality is that pornography addiction is an epidemic. Porn ruins individual lives, marriages, families, careers, and more importantly, it damages people s relationships with God. Did you know -Pornography plays a significant role in 56% of all divorces. -The largest single population of Internet pornography users are ages 12 through 17. -While pornography addiction has mainly been a man s issue, it is increasingly growing among women. We have the blessing of having an expert on internet Pornography Addiction coming to Saint Ambrose in Brunswick to present a workshop on November 14, starting at 7:00pm in the church. Dr. Peter Kleponis, Ph. D. is a licensed clinical therapist who travels around the country educating people on how to win the battle against pornography in America. Come hear about who this affects and how widespread it is, as well as the effects on everyone. Dr. Kleponis will also present a map to healing as well as practical strategies to protect families and additional resources. This event is FREE and open to everyone, including children aged 11 and up. Babysitting will be provided for children aged 2 and up.
