On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Christian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem! Rev. 2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Corner: This Thursday, (Jan. 18 th at 7:00pm) there will be the first of three sessions for those adults who have never been confirmed. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes ones Baptism. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states: The gift of the Holy Spirit is the strength from above in which this individual puts the grace of his Baptism into practice through his life and acts as a witness for Christ. (CC ,1317). Who does not need strength from above? To be a witness of Christ, living life as his follower, takes a lot of strength. For those of you who have never been confirmed I invite you to take advantage of this great sacrament. Bishop Perez will be here April 23 rd to confirm our youth in the Confirmation program as well as any adults who participate in these 3 adult sessions beginning Thursday. There is a commercial running these days with a man playing the song Don t you, forget about me while meals are being served to a large group in a community hall. The commercial then pans to a day after the holidays where there are only a few people helping those in need. What a powerful truth that is being conveyed. Around the holidays there are so many people wanting to help and donate food and money. Then the rest of the year it is only a few who continue to contribute. Don t you forget about me! Around the holidays the nursing homes and senior residences are filled with carolers and others to visit and assure the residents that they are not alone. Then the rest of the year there are only a few who visit the homebound, nursing homes or other senior residential homes. Don t you forget about me! Who are the family members and friends that are out of sight due to health or age? Who are the people, the least of our brothers and sisters, who will only experience God s mercy through us, his witnesses? In this new year, let s strive as a community to make sure that no one feels forgotten. BAPTISM CLASS: Our next class is Sunday, January 21 st. If you are planning a baptism in the next 3 months and have not attended a class within the past 5 years or have never attended a class, please contact the Parish Office to sign up and received additional information. LATIN AMERICAN: The Latin American Collection will take place on January This is the only appeal made by the Diocesan Mission Office for the Cleveland Latin American Mission in El Salvador. It is the main support for two diocesan priests who work in the two parishes served by our Mission Office. This appeal also makes a contribution to the Collection for the Church in Latin America that is managed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and benefits projects and the formation of seminarians, religious and lay leaders in 23 countries across Latin America. Please be generous. ADULT CONFIRMATION: For those adults who have never been confirmed there will be a preparation program beginning Thursday, January 18 th at 7:00pm in the parish hall and we will meet the third Thursday of February and March (3 sessions). Confirmation will be Monday, April 23 rd at 7:00pm. In the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1285 we read: For by the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. It is as if something is missing. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes one s baptism. If you would like more information please contact Fr. John. The Church professes that beauty is a route of access to God, and through humanity s creative artistry we glimpse the power and glory of the Lord. In addition to giving us the background of Michelangelo, Bishop Barron also looks at some of his masterpieces and explains them in a way that leads to awe and praise of God. Come explore the beauty of the Pieta, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and the statue of David. The reflection on David will be a great introduction to the Lenten video program David the King.

FIRST FRIDAY FORUM: Join us on Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Spitzer Conference Center as the Most Reverend Nelson Perez, Bishop of Cleveland will be our guest speaker. Nelson J. Perez was born in Miami, Florida, on June 16, 1961 to David and Emma Perez and is the brother of the late Dr. David Perez and Louis Martin Perez. He was raised in West New York, NJ. He taught at Colegio la Piedad, a Catholic elementary school in Puerto Rico, prior to entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, where he earned Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Theology degrees in 1988 and 1989, respectively. Bishop Perez s first assignment after ordination to the priesthood was as parochial vicar of Saint Ambrose Parish, Philadelphia ( ). He also served as assistant director of the Office for Hispanic Catholics ( ), founding director of the Catholic Institute for Evangelization ( ), Pastor of Saint William Parish, Philadelphia ( ), and Pastor of Saint Agnes Parish, West Chester, PA ( ). Pope Benedict XVI appointed Reverend Monsignor Nelson J. Perez Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre in New York and was ordained a bishop on July 25, As Auxiliary Bishop, he served as Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Vicariate, representing the Diocesan Ordinary and overseeing sixty-six parishes. Bishop Perez served as the Episcopal Vicar for Hispanic Ministry, overseeing fifty-four parishes with pastoral ministry to Hispanics; Formation Programs, and Ecclesial Movements. A kind, joyous, and hard-working person, Bishop Perez enriches those ministries and people entrusted to his care. Luncheon buffet starts at 11:30am follow by Bishop Perez at noon. DVAC (Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy) : Ann King from Grace Community Church down the road is working with Grafton Reintegration Center to gather hygiene products to be given to DVAC (Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy) in Cleveland. The presentation of the products will be in February Domestic Violence is real in our society. Children are the victims of what adults do. Women and children that have to leave without their things and go to a safe place have no soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. These items are so needed for this program. If you wish to donate items from the list below, please contact Ann at or her at: annmking@windstream.net. BAPTISM REUNION: All those who have had a child baptized in the past year as well as any adults baptized in the past year are invited to the 11:00am Mass on Sunday, January 28 th. Raising children as Catholic Christians and living out ones baptismal vows is a daily commitment. We need all the support and help we can get which is why we are having a reunion mass. We are baptized into a community because we need the support and prayers of one another. As a community we will gather with our newly baptized to celebrate their growth and development in the Lord.
