This count is useful for the diocese in tracking trends in Mass attendance. It is also helpful for us in the parish for our own planning and evaluating. The Mass count is taken the same two weekends each year to compare the numbers from year to year. CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION COLLECTION: Thank you for your generosity in last week s Collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign. Because of your support, millions of faithful will have the opportunity to deepen their faith through daily resources on the internet, television, radio, and in print media. We cannot thank her enough for all she has done for us and the parish. She will be truly missed. But as we say farewell we are also pleased to welcome our new administrative assistant Jeanine Tesch. For those of you who have been here a while, you may recall that Jeanine was one of the first assistants we had when Father John arrived. Welcome back Jeanine. 2 Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 PASTORS CORNER: This week the priests of the diocese will be gathering at Sawmill Creek for a 4 day Convocation. The topic of the Convocation is Renewing Our Priesthood and Embracing Our Future. It is a follow-up from the one day gathering last October where the projections of active priests in the diocese for the next 30 years were presented. The projections, as I reported, were that in the year 2045 there would be 145 priests available for ministry in the diocese. There are currently 264. The OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE Convocation this week will be addressing the work that has been done during the past year to plan for future staffing of parishes and the work that still needs to be done to prepare priests and parishes for the future. The other element of these days will focus on characteristics grounded in spirituality that have real implications for a priest to live a healthy and holy lifestyle today amid the times of transition. Given the changes that will need to take place to ensure that there is sacramental ministry available in all parishes in the diocese, the priest needs more than ever to seek a balanced holy life. As you can see it is going to be a heavy week discussing these topics so I ask for your prayers. These times together are always a good time to renew friendships and strengthen the bond that exists among the priests in the diocese. Now it is even more important to strengthen these bonds and the work done this week will be very important. The month of October is going to be a busy one for the parish as we anticipate the 10 th anniversary of the parish on October 29 th. The Parish Council will be meeting, in addition to their monthly meeting, for a directed retreat on how we can plan for the next 10 years. Between the diocesan plans for future staffing, and our parish planning for how we can grow and be even more vibrant, your prayers are greatly needed. Fr. John INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? Sessions for those interested in becoming Catholic are on Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the parish hall. These sessions are for those inquiring about becoming Catholic who were never baptized or baptized in another Christian denomination. There is no commitment at this point except a desire to learn more about the Roman Catholic Church and to grow in your knowledge and love of God. INTERESTED IN LEARNING.. more about your Catholic Faith? This year we are inviting anyone who would like to learn more or update their faith to join in six RCIA sessions. Based on Catholic beliefs and teachings, each session will enable you to reflect on how coming to know more about Jesus can enhance the spiritual quality of your life. At the conclusion of these six open sessions there will be options for separate adult faith formation programs. The topics are: Oct. 5: Teach Us to Pray: Prayer is an essential way to nurture our relationship with God. We learn in the Gospels that Jesus prayed regularly and taught us how to pray. This session will focus on various forms of prayer. Oct. 12: Mystery of Suffering Oct. 19: Head-Heart-Action You are welcome to attend all or as many as you would like. The sessions begin at 7:00pm on Wednesdays in the parish hall. BLESSING OF ANIMALS: On Monday, October 3 td at 6:00pm there will be a blessing of animals. Please gather around the water feature near the front doors of the church. If possible please bring pet food or supplies or a monetary donation that will go to our Helping Hands Ministry for distribution to clients with pets. The pet blessing is for all animals, small and large! EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS: The next diocesan training for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will be taking place soon. If you are interested in being trained and certified as a Eucharistic Minister please see Fr. John or contact the parish office to register. The sessions that are the nearest to us are: Thursday, October 20 th at St. Ambrose, 929 Pearl Rd. Brunswick from 6:30-9:30. For a full listing of the sessions you can go to LIVING ROSARY: In celebration of the 10 th anniversary of the parish, we will celebrate a Living Rosary on Thursday, October 27 th at 7:00pm in the church. For those of you in grades 4 and up we are looking for new altar servers. Class dates are Saturday mornings from 9:00am - 11:00am, October 15, 22, November 5, 12 and 19 if needed. Those attending these classes will be on the December - February schedule. Mr. Andrews will be visiting the GLFF classes on October 9 th to sign up youth interested in becoming an Altar Server. Adults you too can be an Altar Server. Please call the office to sign up. You will attend the same classes as the youth. CENSUS/SURVEY RESULTS: First we would like to thank everyone who returned their census and survey. We sent out 1,047 mailings and received 580 census and 510 surveys back. They are still trickling in, so if you have not sent yours in, please do so at your earliest convenience. The survey asking if you would be interested in using and E-Giving system to make your donations to the church had the following results. Yes = 115 No = 380 Maybe = 15 FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: As Election Day approaches we will be publishing excerpts from Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States: This statement highlights the role of the Church in the formation of conscience and the corresponding moral responsibility of each Catholic to hear, receive, and act upon the Church s teaching in the lifelong task of forming his or her conscience. Foremost amongst those teachings are the four basic principles of Catholic social doctrine: the dignity of the human person, the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, no. 160). There will be a Parent meeting regarding the preparation for the sacrament of Reconciliation on Sunday, October 9 th at 9:35am in the Chapel. At least one parent should be present for this meeting. HIGH SCHOOL GLFF meets this weekend. We will meet between the Sunday Masses in the "children's room" in the church from 9:35-10:50. The students decided we should talk about world issues this week. In this big, crazy world what can a teen do in regards to global issues? How does our faith play a personal role for each of us, and how is our Church involved on larger levels? This is open to all high schoolers that are not in Confirmation prep. Friends are welcome! There is no preregistration or a fee, please come and let your voice be heard in the conversation! The next class dates are October 30, November 6, 20 and December 4 & 11. This class is steered by the students, call /text Joe Filipiak with any questions at FAMILY PROMISE: We will be welcoming families to their home the week of October 23 rd. Signups will be in the gathering area Oct 8/9 and Oct 15/16. We are looking for volunteers for cooking, set up/takedown, laundry, and overnights. Please see Christine, Linda or Judy in the gathering area to answer any questions. At 1:00pm there will be training for any new volunteers as well as an OPEN HOUSE for anyone who would like to see how the church social hall is transformed into our guest home for the week. Please stop by. RESPECT LIFE: October is Respect Life month. To commemorate this, we will be praying after the 8:00am mass Tuesday s in October starting October 11 th, in fulfillment of Pope Francis Year of Mercy. For more information about the Respect Life ministry or other events scheduled around the diocese for the month, please contact the parish office. BAPTISM CLASS: The next baptism class is scheduled for October 16 th. If you are planning a baptism and have not attended a class within the past 5 years, please contact the parish office. HELPING HANDS / FAMILY PROMISE: During our spotlight weekend of October 8/9 we will draw the winner of 2 beautiful wooden bowls, made by our parishioner Joe Hodkey; as well as a quilt made by the inmates of Grafton Correctional facility. These items will be displayed in our Gathering Area within the next few weeks and raffle tickets will be available after all masses. The cost of the tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The proceeds from the bowls will go to Family Promise and the proceeds from the quilt will go to items donated to Grafton Correctional, so quilts can be made for every family member that comes through our doors within the family promise program. WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER: "Mary and I have been married for 25 years and we thought we communicated like pros or at least better than our friends.
