The law of fasting is for those years old. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence which means no meat is to be eaten on those Fridays. The law of abstinence is obligatory for all who are 14 years old or older Why? On Fridays during Lent, we particularly remember the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. In memory of this great sacrifice, we continue the tradition of penance and sacrifice the abstaining from meat on Fridays is an outward manifestation of an interior reality: the conversion of our hearts. YOUNG ADULTS join us for the video David the King on Fridays during Lent at 7:30pm (following Stations of the Cross). This video series from Bishop Robert Barron and Word of Fire Ministries looks at the life of King David and reflects upon his relevance for us today. The video is minutes long with discussion to follow. Babysitting will be available. Make this night out with other young adults part of your Lenten practices. He knew who He could trust, who needed compassion and who He should challenge. Every day we are surrounded by people who are part of our little world. Are we treating each relationship the same or are we trying to meet people where they are through positive influences? First Sunday in Lent Pastor s Corner: The gospel on New Year s Day was Luke s story of the shepherds coming to the manger and telling all who were there what they had been told.

Which then leads us to a greater awareness of how blessed we are. However, our greed, our selfishness, our sinfulness gets in the way and we do not see or anticipate the works of God in our lives.

The Season of Lent is the time to seek to root out all that is keeping us from acknowledging that God is doing amazing things in our lives and giving thanks for these blessings.

Those who heard them were amazed. I brought out then in the homily how we are to always anticipate being amazed by God. If we look and anticipate we will see the amazing things that God is doing. Which then leads us to a greater awareness of how blessed we are. However, our greed, our selfishness, our sinfulness gets in the way and we do not see or anticipate the works of God in our lives. We also can become complacent, falling into a routine of busyness, which distracts us from acknowledging and being thankful for the blessing that God showers upon us. The Season of Lent is the time to seek to root out all that is keeping us from acknowledging that God is doing amazing things in our lives and giving thanks for these blessings. We make sacrifices during Lent not to gain God s attention and get points for our ticket to heaven. Rather we make sacrifices to God out of thanksgiving for the blessings in our lives. We make sacrifices to show God our gratitude for the amazing things he does each moment in our lives. This weekend our candidates and catechumen enter into the final weeks of preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Their picture along with a short introduction is in this bulletin so that you get a chance to put their name with their face and thus introduce and welcome them when you see them. It is also the time of final preparation for those children preparing for First Eucharist and our youth and adults who are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation during the Easter Season. All of their names are listed on a bookmark that you can pick up in the Gathering Area. Please use this bookmark in your spiritual reading or bible during Lent and pray for those whose names are listed on it. The Parish Mission is not far off, March 4, 5 and 6. Please make it a priority this Lent to attend one or all three evenings. The topic is on the Eucharist and will help us all to deepen our knowledge, appreciation and devotion to the great gift of the Eucharist. This video series by Bishop Robert Barron looks at the role of David in 1 st and 2 nd Samuel as the new Adam and foreshadowing Christ the King. Prayer cards/bookmarks: These bookmarks list those candidates preparing for 1 st Communion, Confirmation and those in preparation to be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Please keep these candidates for the initiation sacraments in your prayers during the season of Lent. Finding Hope These daily reflection booklets will be available at the doors of the church along with booklets for families and for children. These contain a Scripture passage and reflection for each day of Lent. Operation Rice Bowl: RICE BOWLS have a rich tradition during the Lenten Season and this year there are even more resources available to use as a part of our response to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Bishop Perez in a letter to the parishes writes: CRS Rice Bowl provides resources to bring Lenten spirituality to life for families, parish and school communities, while continuing to connect Catholics in our diocese with our brothers and sisters in need around the world. They are in need of 3 twin size beds. Plus one of our recently housed families are also in need of twin beds. They were using blow up beds but the beds broke. Sleeping on the ground is not fun! Also both families have nothing and could use dressers, kitchen table, chairs, sofa, kitchen supplies, etc. Family Promise does have the ability to pickup your donations, so you will not have to go out of your way to get the items to where they need to be. If you can help please contact Family Promise at PRAYER SHAWL: During the month of February, there will be a basket of mini Prayer Shawls in the Gathering Area. You are welcomed to take one to carry with you in your pocket/purse or to give to someone as a reminder of God s strength, comfort and love. The next meeting of the Prayer Shawl Ministry will be on Saturday, March 3 rd at 10:30am in the Parish Hall. Anyone is welcomed whether you can knit, crochet, sew, or tie-knot fleece. CURSILLO (pronounced Cur-see-yo): is a movement of the Church that promotes Catholic ideals, fellowship and spiritual growth while providing an opportunity to deepen your Catholic faith. A Cursillo is an encounter with Christ where you can experience, on a more deep level, the love God has for you. What is the meaning of stewardship? The Catholic Faith Handbook defines stewardship as "an attitude that we do not own the gifts God has given us but are trustees of those gifts. We have an obligation to share our time, talents and material treasures with others." This week become more aware of the gifts that God has entrusted to your care. AN EVENING OF CONFESSION: Wednesday, February 28, 2018 our parish and all of the parishes in the Diocese will offer An Evening of Confession from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Parishioners are asked to evangelize by inviting family or friends who are away from the Church to join in this special Lenten practice. Priests at all parishes will be present for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As Pope Francis says, The joy of God is the joy of forgiveness. MAKING THE MASS MORE MEANINGFUL: Join in learning more about the Mass on Sunday, March 11 th from 9:30 10:50am in the parish hall. This intergenerational learning experience will help us to gain valuable insights into the Mass which will make it more meaningful. Through the introduction of Mass Journals and Eucharistic Devotions we will learn to look at the Mass in a refreshing way that will draw us into the mystery of God s love celebrated at church. SPOT LIGHT: This weekend our spotlight is the Liturgy and Art & Environment Ministries. They will be in the Gathering Area after all the masses that weekend. Next weekend we will be spotlighting the Pre-Cana Ministry. This ministry conducts a one day class for engaged couple in preparation for marriage. Their next class is March 18 th at St. Patrick s in Wellington.
