Genesis House of Lorain County presents an Empty Seat at the Table. A pew, designated with a purple ribbon, is reserved for 2 women who have lost their lives due to domestic violence in the Grafton area. Please take a moment to read their story on the article in the pew. Genesis House provides a safe harbor for women and their children who are experiencing domestic violence. They have a lot of plans to honor and educate the community during this month of awareness. Please check out their website at 24 hour Hotline: or EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: The church will be open from 3:00 7:30pm on Wednesday, October 10 th for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. In addition to praying for your personal intentions you are asked to pray for the Church during this difficult time that has resulted from the clergy scandal and to pray for the priests of the diocese who are gathering this week for prayer and reflection. Congratulations to Cody Buckhannon & Candace Allen who were married this past week. May their love continue to grow and reflect the love of God for us. 2 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 PASTORS CORNER: Today, Sunday is Respect Life Sunday. The theme this year is Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent. In the first reading at Mass we are reminded through the creation story in Genesis that we are created in the image and likeness of God. The challenge for us is to reverence the sacred in all that God has created. We are called to respect life at all stages from conception to death as well as to respect and preserve the created order of nature. All of life is sacred. In their notes on Respect Life Sunday, the US bishops state: We are cherished, chosen, and sent by God to love one another as He loves us. In doing so, we help build a culture that cherishes all human life. Building a culture of life is simply part of who we are as Christians, as followers of Christ. Both the US bishops as well as our diocesan office on life offer a number of great resources to develop your understanding of life issues so you can grow in a deeper respect for life. This Tuesday thru Friday the priests of the diocese will be gathering with our bishop at Sawmill Creek for our Semiannual convocation. The theme will be The Gift of the Priesthood: Engaged, Fruitful & Joyful. Although the plans for this convocation began two years ago, they become very relevant in light of the current climate in the Church as a result of the clergy sex abuse scandal. It will be good to reflect upon the priesthood and to support one another as we move forward to reform the Church. Wednesday evening of the convocation we will break from the planned agenda to discuss our feelings, what to expect next, and where do we go from here. In light of this topic discussion I have scheduled an opportunity to come to pray before the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesday for the priests as we gather as well as the victims of abuse and for the Church. The Church will be open from 3:00pm until 7:30pm for private prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. And be assured of the prayers of all the priests as we gather during these days of prayer and reflection. Fr John EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: Our parish will hosting a diocesan training session for those interested in being commissioned to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass and to the sick on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 from 7:00pm 9:00pm. Those seeking to become Eucharistic Ministers need to attend a diocesan training session as well an orientation session in the parish. There are other available sites and dates for the training as listed below that are close by. To see the full list go to: WOMEN OF FAITH: Save the date! We will host a women's afternoon of reflection on Saturday, November 17 th, 11:30-5:30pm. Women of all ages are invited to come and see how to "De-stress and Be Blest!" Registration will begin next week. RCIA: Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 17 th, at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall, Room 2. This grace-filled evening will take place at St. Vincent de Paul Church, North ridge Rd., Thursday, October 25 th. Mass will begin at 7:00pm, followed by the rosary and a beautiful candlelight procession to the outdoor shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. Refreshment will be served afterwards. This nationally recognized program reduces the fear of falling, increases activity level through a small muscle movement exercise program and has discussions on home safety that helps to remove hazards from the home. The workshop will be held at the parish hall on Thursday from 9:00am - 11:00am starting on October 18 th and concluding on December 13 th. There will be no session on November 22 nd. Actually, the Knights just delivered one ton of bird seed to the Sandusky Veterans Home for their flock of peacocks. The peacocks are a source of entertainment for the veterans all year long and one ton of bird seed will last about a year. The Knights are committed to charity as well as patriotism. LADY S GUILD: Our next meeting is on October 15 th at 6:30pm in the parish hall (note the earlier time for the general meeting portion). Please join us at 7:00pm after the brief meeting for an entertaining presentation on Vintage Purses by a representative of the Lorain County Historical Society. All from the parish interested in this unique topic are invited to join us. Hope to see you there. Refreshments will be provided. STEWARDSHIP CORNER: Today, in the first reading we hear, So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. (GENESIS 2:19) The creation story reminds us of two important points. First, in the beginning, God entrusted the entire world to our care. Second, stewardship has been around since the creation of humankind. Stewardship is not something recently developed by the Church. Just as past generations built our Church, it is now our responsibility to continue to nurture and develop these gifts for future generations. In what ways are we caring for creation and our Church today? GLFF NEWS: Spend time together as a family discussing the Family Corner reflection. Visit the Gospel Weeklies website at and select the "Gospel at Home" link to access the Family Guide for this week. FAMILY MASS: Our next Family Mass will be on October 14 th at 11:00. Currently, we need one lector, two Eucharistic Minsters and four greeters. All parish families are invited to participate. Embrace this opportunity to teach your children about actively participating in Mass through your involvement in these various Mass ministries. This Sunday s Gospel covers two very important topics marriage and the pure hearts of children. The Apostles thought that the children might have been bothering Jesus, but our Lord wants all of us to come to him with hearts like children. Look around the church and notice all the different families. Spend a minute praying for anyone who might be struggling with a family problem. FLU VACCINES: Pharmacist Jason Buga from Discount Drug Mart will be available to administer flu vaccines following all masses on the weekend of October 6 & 7 th. Two vaccines will be available: the standard, quadrivalent for individuals ages 7-64 years and the high-dose vaccine for individuals aged 65 & older. No payment is due at the time of the clinic. Training will begin on Saturday October 27 th at 9:00am in the church and will finish on Saturday November 17 th. YOUTH GROUP: It s CORN MAZE TIME! Students grades 7-12 are invited to the Beriswill Farms corn maze in Valley City on Saturday, October 20 th. Cost is $8 which includes the maze, hayrides, animal petting area and their huge pipe slide. We will have pizza after 4:30 Mass, leave 6:30 and return 10pm. FRIENDS WELCOME! Bring a flashlight and come dressed for the weather, it can be muddy. All participants must have a signed permission form. If attending please call/ text Jen Filipiak at so rides can be arranged. SCRIPTURE STUDY: Encounter JESUS by joining the new Turning Point-Gospel of John, on Thursday October 11 th at 7:00pm in room 2 of the hall. Session four Nicodemus on pages Our Scripture Study of the Gospel of John (Jesus presence) promises to allow us to meet Jesus in a new ways. Please join the group to raise your scriptural awareness. SCHOOL TIES: A couple of weeks back there was an insert in the bulletin asking if you would be interested in adopting a college student to help them remain tied to the church. LADIES' NIGHT OUT: The committee members are asking for donations of kitchen items, gift cards or any New items that can be put into raffle baskets for our November 10 th event.
